Our Verdict
Not as good as the recent 100,000 point bonus. Most people will probably prefer the 100,000 point + $500 bonus on the Chase Sapphire Reserve currently available. Won’t be adding this to our list of the best credit card bonuses due to the recent 100,000 point bonus.
Whoops sorry. Wrong thread.
“ The new cardmember bonus may not be available to you if you currently have any other personal Sapphire cards open”
Any positive datapoint for being approved for the Preferred and new cardmember bonus while holding a Reserve card?
I haven’t seen one, doesn’t mean one doesn’t exist though. I have seen DPs for denials when already holding a Sapphire.
I tried applying today and was not eligible due to having a Sapphire Reserve card open.
Guess there still isn’t a positive DP then. 🙁

In my opinion it is a devastating DEVALUATION!!!
That’s a little bit of an exaggeration. It’s still a good offer but just not as good as the current CSR offer.
n00b.
Datapoint for ya all: P2 was insta-approved for new CSP this morning. No pop up. Previously held a CSP 2 years ago (downgrade to Freedom). Last sapphire bonus was dated 6/11/22. Does not currently hold a Sapphire card. 4/24. 3 biz cards and 4-5 other chase cards. So definitely the 48 month rule is variable, not firm. But from other dps, seems like you definitely cant hold a Sapphire while applying.

The 1.25 is gone, isn’t it?
I believe so. They were touting a points boost for both the CSP and CSR but sounds like that will be very YMMV.
No, it’s not. It will be around for 2 more years if you’re an existing cardholder. If you’re going to be a new cardholder then the permanent 1.25x is gone, but they have the Points Boost ability. I’ve already booked some hotels using the new Points Boost and it’s great. I found plenty of great hotels at 1.5x.
I wouldn’t use most of the sapphire extra goodies besides the $300 travel credit.
Preferred: 75k points +. 1.25 travel. – $95
Reserve: 100k points + 1.5 travel + $300 – $795 fee
Don’t forget you can double dip the $300 travel credit, which makes the Reserve a better deal. You don’t have to keep it…
Can you?
https://www.reddit.com/r/CreditCards/comments/1lfdh2b/can_you_still_double_dip_the_csr_travel_credit/
actually i transfer my chase points more often than i use them from the portal so approximately,
Preferred: 75k points – $95 fee
Reserve: 100k points + $300 – $795 fee = 100k – $495 out of pocket.
essentially you are spending $400 extra dollars to get 25k points compared to preferred
If you can’t make use of the $500 Travel coupon and if the double dip doesn’t work, the math is correct. But if either or both of the above are in play, it’s a positive $100 or $400 for the extra 25k points. Assuming you don’t make use of any of the other coupons on the CSR.
The $500 travel coupon is $250 per 6 months, using special “edit” properties. we use signup bonuses for hotel stays. Marriot, hilton, hyatt, or IHG. Even if edit properties include those, we stay at better hotels than $250/night would get us.
More likely we would use the $300 dining coupon.
That’s a separate thing. The $500 Travel coupon is part of the SUB.
$500 Credit Towards Chase Travel (The promotional credit is valid for a one-time use only, if you apply the promotional credit to a transaction less than $500, you will forfeit the remaining balance. If a portion of your purchase is cancelled due to an issue with the service provider, you will receive a new promotional credit for the amount cancelled)

oh! will there are 2 $500 credits then! ok that i could use i think.
its through the portal though. not as valuable to me that way.
Glad I could clear that up for you.
To each their own but I find the exact same fares whether through the portal or directly from the airlines.
The fares in dollars are the same but I don’t use dollars. I use credit card miles. Or points. My sapphire points come into play when. I can’t get the points I need. And that I transfer not portal. For example in 2023 I used 8 United credit cards for business class to round trip for two to Paris. That’s tens of thousands of dollars worth. If I can’t do it again I’ll probably transfer chase points next time.
Btw I could ask you a similar question. Why use the portal when transferring to frequent flyer or hotel loyalty program is better.
This is paltry compared to the 100k + $300/30k MR (via Rakuten stack) offer from a month ago. For anyone interested in CSP, it would probably be better to wait for the increased sign-up bonus from an inevitable CSP refresh. Based on how they’ve changed the CSR, I would bet that Chase is eager to Amex Goldify the CSP.
I think you’re right and that would be a shame. CSP is actually a great card and I reward Chase by putting a bunch of spend on it. Honestly I’d settle for a $149 annual fee with no other changes, but if they start taking away some of the more profitable multipliers for people that know what they’re doing like online grocery… see ya.
What makes CSP a great card? From what I’ve read the only great part about it is the initial SUB
https://www.reddit.com/r/ChaseSapphire/comments/1byc12a/is_sapphire_preferred_worth_it_if_i_only_travel/kyiya99/
3x online grocery is a great category. Try using Kroger Pay in-store with the CSP on a gift card purchase.
The CSP now looks a lot like the $95 Citi Strata Premier. Without the points multipliers, there’s little reason to stay in the Chase ecosystem anymore.
They did take away the 1.25, replaced with a supposed Points Boost, which is a big reason I didn’t mind paying the $95. Current cardholders can use it through October 2027 (same grandfathered timeframe as the CSR).
I’m guessing that won’t be for a while for the expected refresh. Just a guess that they’ll want the CSR and certain changes to CSP just made to settle a bit.
I think I would prefer to do a bank/brokerage sign up bonus that doesn’t require spending any money at all instead of this.
Unless it’s a brokerage bonus for an IRA, you’ll have to pay taxes on your bank/brokerage SUB.
^ This. Bank/brokerage bonuses are great but the tax implications can add up. For cc bonuses, I am spending the money anyway, might as well make some on top.
Exactly right. Except for referral bonuses – even for credit cards – you get a 1099 for those.
Why not do both?
They’re better together. The minimum ROS for this is 16% if you just cash out at 1cpp. Why fund your new bank account(s) with some 2% card from the sock drawer instead of a new SUB card?
Target bank SUB’s that offer funding with a cc-best of both worlds.
Not a great bonus but I’m not sure most people here would prefer that CSR bonus. Is 25 UR worth $700 more in AF and having to use the travel portal to maximize the rest of the SUB? Probably only for single folks who travel domestically and can make those apple credits go further.
Was thinking the same as well but the counterpoint is the $300 travel credit on the CSR
Backing that out you’re left with $400 more annual fee for 25k UR plus the $500 hotel credit (and general CSR betterness).
Far from cut and dry but definitely closer
