  • Air Canada’s Aeroplan program is offering 2,500 bonus miles when you become a member and earn your first mile by September 30, 2020

Our Verdict

Air Canada released the full details of the new Aeroplan program recently, one interesting thing is being able to pool miles with up to 8 people. Earning 1 mile shouldn’t be that difficult with Aeroplan to trigger this offer they have a shopping portal and are also a transfer partner of American Express, Capital One & Barclays. Shopping portal is probably your best bet, not sure if there are any merchants that just let you buy something for $1.

Aeroplan has been devalued. Bummer. Business class points have devalued about 40% and fuel surcharges have gone up as well.

I made a $0.,75 purchase on Kobo and the miles posted in about a week.

“Shopping portal is probably your best bet, not sure if there are any merchants that just let you buy something for $1.”

You can also buy an ebook for $1 on Kobo. If you click the link provided by aeroplan estore you will be directed to the Kobo Canada page but you can just switch to the US during checkout. I bought one on August 26 and my miles were post with a transaction date of August 27.

You can find lots of items for around $1 with free shipping (from China, takes a month or two) at AliExpress. LED string lights is a good one.

I kept getting ‘A station name must be used with a post office box’, even though I was not entering a PO box. Eventually I gave up. An auspicious beginning for the new Aeroplan!

You can also order Uber Eats through the Aeroplan shopping portal.

Placed an order for $1.09, and will see if it credits. Hoping my disabled “cross-site tracking” in Safari doesn’t cause issues — cookies are enabled. Thanks for the tip on Uber Eats being on there!

Confirmed: Ordering Uber Eats through the portal does the trick — my $1.09 pickup order triggered a 4 miles credit (2 miles per dollar spent with a 2x promotional bonus). Guessing ordering $0.50 would trigger 1 mile plus the 1 mile bonus.

Thank you kindly. I’d assume the 2500 miles come after the 30th!

I wonder if it would work if I closed my never-used account and opened a new one. FWIW, Overstock.com is one of their merchants. Everything is free shipping, and I found a $3.99 item (Monopoly Grab and Go game).

Also curious about this — the system won’t let me sign up, even with different email address :/

Update: Tried to sign up for myself and P2, but no luck — “Our records show you’re already an Aeroplan member, please retrieve your Aeroplan Number”.

Called Aeroplan to see about having the promo added to our accounts — also no luck.

Asked if we can sign up for new accounts, and was told that, as long as enough of the information is different on our accounts (and/or we have the other account closed/deleted), we should be in the clear. Note: The agent explicitly said they didn’t tell me that, so please don’t mention it to another agent.

Bad news is the ‘already an Aeroplan member’ error is, seemingly, linked to your full name, which needs to match the name on your passport/ID.

Good news is Aeroplan provides a way to update your name using official documentation.

Opened a new account with a “misspelled” name, and will ask for my old account to be closed/deleted, then go through the process of changing my “misspelled” name to my real name on the new account.

Worth it for the 2,500 Points? Maybe if you don’t spend an hour on the phone calling Aeroplan — like I did. Good news is that I already called Aeroplan, so you don’t have to 🙂

If you email [email protected] asking them to close and delete your account, they will — unsure how many days it took, but the deletion happened within a two weeks. Good luck!
