I wear the shield when cooking to avoid oil splashing on my face [facepalm]

Arrives before Valentines day if you can think of any alternative uses.

Shields have remained “boutique” Covid items. I guess some factories in China made too many of them and, since they didn’t catch on much, they now need to be unloaded. Some schools allow them instead of masks and, for obvious reasons, they often “work” better than masks on young children (neither protects the kid, but shields are easier for kids to deal with). I see a few at the airport and on airplanes. I’ve never really understood what the shield would do for you unless somebody spit in your face. Apparently others feel the same.

The appeal, of course, is comfort. In certain parts of the world where wearing cloth masks would increase the risk of heat stroke, plastic face shields are still effective at diverting your breath downward or to the side–away from other people. Japan has had some success with plastic mouth shields in conjunction with social distancing and basic hygiene (Japan’s mask-wearing culture dates back to the Meiji era).

Unlike surgical masks with multiple layers which offer some protection to both the wearer and everyone else (when worn correctly), face shields are far too loose-fitting to either trap particles that wearers expel or protect the wearer from smaller, aerosolized particles (less than 5 micrometres in size) that can be easily inhaled.

In addition to the obvious, it also protects your eyes. Masks do not. The virus can only penetrate mucus membranes, which is what your eyes are. This is why some people (and all healthcare providers) wear goggles. Others do know what they are useful for.

I’m ashamed to say I sent a mask to a friend because it was cheaper than mailing her a birthday card.

I would rather have a mask than a card anyway! Good call!

Paint it black minus the eyes and you can become Lord Helmet.
