[Now Removed] American Airlines Adds Five Partner Airlines To Online Award Booking (Cathay, Malaysian, Sri Lankan, LATAM & Qatar)

Update: This was briefly showing up last night, but has since been pulled. In a statement to VFTW an American Airlines representative stated:

Late yesterday, we incorrectly displayed award bookings for several of our partners on aa.com and they have since been removed. Making more award partners bookable on aa.com is something that our customers continually ask for, so please rest assured that we are working towards this.

Hopefully when this is re added, they show all partner flights and not just select bookings.

American Airlines has expanded their online award searching and booking. You can now book the following airlines online:

  • Cathay Pacific
  • Malaysian
  • Sri Lankan
  • Qatar
  • LATAM

Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be a perfect solution, some routes that are bookable by phone don’t seem to be showing up online when searching on the American Airlines website. For example non stop awards on the above four airlines doesn’t show up. It looks like maybe it’ll only show on the American Airlines if at least one leg is American Airlines or a partner that was previously bookable online (e.g British Airways). It’s also possible there is another reason these non stop flights don’t show up.

Some hardcore travel hackers will actually see this as a devaluation, as making the booking process easier means that other people are more likely to book as there is limited award space. I personally hate redeeming points & miles, mostly because I’m awful at it and don’t have the patience to deal with long phone calls and don’t really enjoy min/maxing the award booking process but each to their own.

2. How long before I trust negative results and don’t look on BA as a backup anyway…

Couldn’t find anything else other than British airways. Am I searching wrong?

You seem like an interesting guy… running the best credit card site out there, but you hate redeeming miles… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

One of these days we need a “getting to know” DoC series!

How do you define “best”?

Also LATAM; found it after my initial post.

I’ve been too hard on AA past few years, deeming their miles near impossible to redeem. That actually changed a bit for us this summer — seeing far more award availability, even to smaller airports…. May the trend continue.

Separately, delighted to see American and Qatar hookup….. one more thumb in the eye to the Saudi/UAE plan to force Qatar to heel to their outrageous demands. (shutting down al-jazeera is tantamount to demanding Qatar to give up its independence….. goes to events in 1992….. I was there then)

+1. AA has increased award space the last 6-12 months. There was a write up in the WSJ about this recently.

Sucks that all the increased award space are married segments. Making it harder to book the long haul direct flights.

I’m with you Doc.
Redeeming miles shouldn’t be taking a 45 minute phone call.
Plus when you call, you’re taking a gamble with how competent the CSR is.

One nice thing about them not being listed before was that availability tended to be good. The calls were normally less than 20 minutes and rather straight forward. Since AA miles are so easy to get I hope this doesn’t tank availability

Well it shouldn’t tank availability for me as I only used what was available on the website. Should only increase availability for me both on AA and off AA as more people use miles on non-AA flights.

DOC i also saw S7 while award searching Eastern Europe / Russia, it wasn’t there before today!

S7 does not fly to US though does it?

Surprised they didn’t add JAL too.

“I personally hate redeeming points & miles, mostly because I’m awful at it and don’t have the patience to deal with long phone calls and don’t really enjoy min/maxing the award booking process but each to their own.” Ha! This describes me, too!

While this is minor positive news (I hate the whole calling to book bit, too as it can be very frustrating depending on the agent), it’s overshadowed for me by Ultimate Rewards losing KE as a transfer partner! The miles gods giveth and the miles gods taketh away!

Lets do a “DOC” Appreciation month where everybody that uses this sites calculates all savings they made AND value of redeemed points/miles and give it to DOC. (MULTI MULTI MILLIONAIRE OVERNIGHT) 🙂

Is there a list of where these airlines fly? Not sure what this adds to travel possibilities.

LATAM services a good portion of South America, specifically Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru.

It’s Sri LankaN – Sri Lanka is a country, not an airline name. Just like American VS America …
