American Airlines Launches Economy Web Specials – Discounted Award Flights [New Routes Added]

Update 2/19/19: More routes added. This time more routes to Europe for 8,000-12,500 one way. Available in February & March. Please American Airlines, I’m begging you to make a dedicated landing page so we know all of the routes and eligible dates. Hat tip to atonkscat

  • Raleigh (RDU) to London (LHR)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) to Barcelona (BCN)
  • St. Louis (STL) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) (sold out)
  •  Miami (MIA) to Madrid (MAD)

Update 12/11/18: New routes have again been added. Of particular interest, new Europe routes:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) to Barcelona (BCN)
  • Raleigh/Durham (RDU) to London Heathrow (LHR)
  • St. Louis (STL) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG)
  • Miami (MIA) to Madrid (MAD)

A full list of routes is as follows: ABQ-SAT, BOS-GSO, CLE-MSP, CLT-MLB, DFW-BRO, DFW-CRP, DFW-FLL, DFW-ICT, DFW-LIT, DFW-MAF, DFW-MFE, DFW-MSY, DFW-YYZ, IAH-ABQ, IAH-SNA, IND-AUS, LAX-AUS, LAX-LAS, LAX-PDX, LGA-ORF, LGA-RIC, MCO-BWI, OKC-SNA, ORD-ROA, PHL-GSO, PHX-LAS, PHX-LGB, PIT-MCO, RDU-DAY

American Airlines, it’s time to add a landing page for these offers. Hat tip to TPG

Update 11/12/18: New routes have been added. Travel is still valid from January 8th, 2019 onwards. New routes:

  • Austin <-> Los Angeles
  • Portland <-> Los Angeles
  • Honolulu <-> Los Angeles
  • Honolulu <-> Phoenix
  • Dallas Fort-Worth <-> Ft. Lauderdale
  • Orlando <-> Pittsburgh
  • Las Vegas <-> Los Angeles
  • Dallas Fort-Worth <-> New Orleans
  • Las Vegas <-> Phoenix
  • Boston <-> Greensboro
  • Orlando <-> Baltimore

If American Airlines wants these to be a success they desperately need to create a landing page advertising these specials and the routes they are on. For example some of the above routes are 5,000 miles whereas others are 12,500. Hat tip to View From The Wing.

American Airlines has launched economy web specials, in an apparent attempt to compete with Delta’s increasingly common Delta Flash Sales. American Airlines already offers reduced mileage awards and that program offers a discount of 1,000-7,000 miles but requires holding an American Airlines co-branded credit card. American Airlines has confirmed that program will be remaining and economy web specials will be in addition to this program.

To begin with economy web specials have launched on the following six routes:

  • Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) — Wichita (ICT)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) — Corpus Christi (CRP)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) — Brownsville South Padre Island (BRO)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) — McAllen (MFE)
  • Phoenix (PHX) — Long Beach (LGB)
  • Charlotte (CLT) — Orlando-Melbourne (MLB)

Normally these routes would cost 7,500 miles and under this new program they will cost as little as 5,000 miles one way. You can book these routes now, but they aren’t available for flights before January 8th, 2019.  Economy web specials are more limited than regular award bookings as you cannot make any changes to the booking (cancellation is still available but at $150 for the first passenger and then an additional $25 per passenger in most cases losing the miles is the better option). At this stage it isn’t clear how often these web specials will be refreshed. I also don’t see a dedicated landing page explaining the new program, but it’s possible I just missed that.

how many times do legacy airlines need to get their ass kicked by southwest. stop trying to compete. u cant win. esp AA.

altho i see this as a way for AA to entice all the AA abusers to fly domestic with them using 75k match miles vs paying cash for super cheap short haul non-transcon competition. backdoor suffocation. this is why DFW AA HQ is used to test.

hmm. i see wat u did there AA…

AA abusers? Get real. We are simply taking what they are freely giving.

I’ve seen the major airlines get some crazy criticisms on points blogs (odd because the readers are generally the people smart enough to take ADVANTAGE of the airlines!), but Ninja has taken it to the next level. American Airlines Derangement Syndrome? Seriously, relax. They’re not screwing you here. They’re offering you a deal. Take it or leave it.

Why can’t you go to Madrid for a long weekend. We just went to Paris for a long weekend. Not really a fan of Madrid other than the Art Museums but Toledo is nice. Anyway more than 4 days in Madrid would be too much.

Chris

How can you like Paris over Madrid? 1 day in Paris is too much, so overrated.

Finally AA gives DFW some love. We felt ignored most of the time

Heck yes, Honolulu to PHX.

Hey, Will, any way to delete my other post? Didn’t mean to put my email out there like that.

I’m not seeing a single fare less than 19.5k AA miles at the Web Special fare. As compared to the Saver level of 20k. Avios still the way to go.

frogger

They need to do this for Europe as well.

David
David

“Economy” is code for “We hope they don’t realize the rules so they pay the extra baggage fees and other fees”.

I mean, if you can fit a duffel bag under your seat for a 1 day trip by all means guess. I’ll stick with Southwest as well for personal travel.

iahphx
iahphx

WTF? What’s with these wacko complaints? You get a free checked bag with these fares. Were you planning on moving all your household possessions on your award ticket? And feel free to book your award ticket to Europe on WN and swim the last 3500 miles (you can use your extra free bag on WN as a flotation device).

Meanwhile, back in the real world, I’m seeing some crazy prices here. Like the best ever. For example, LAX to BCN is only 6000 miles. And if you don’t live on the west coast, you might think of booking this flight home through your favorite AA hub to take advantage of this offer.

David
David

Can I ask what you’re smoking? Since when does ANY economy grade ticket allow for ANY free checked bags?

iahphx
iahphx

To Europe. Or if you do what most folks here do, you get an AA credit card that one of the banks pays you to take.

miafll
miafll

International flights still allow one checked bag free in coach. Or, get an AA card the first year is free – you get free checked bag as long as you own that card!

mo
mo

Those 6000 miles come with 2 stops. If that’s ok for you, by all means its a great deal. Better to wait for a Norweigen deal (say $150 one way) NON stop from LAX.

miafll
miafll

You MISS the point – if you live at an AA hub and the 2 connections include your hub, then you can say bye at that connection…

Got it?

Some just dont have enough brain power to see thru things and find the gems.

Personally I dont fly coach but for those who only use coach awards, this is ridiculously cheap.

Beats your Norweigen deal which the $150 does not give you a check bag nor select a seat at booking or anytime.

iahphx
iahphx

@miafll — I guess this thread shows that even when an airline is practically giving the tickets away, people will complain!

BTW, for east coasters, I kind of like the 10000 mile roundtrip MIA-BZE fare. Yes, you’ll have to pay for your ticket to MIA if you don’t live down there, but those tickets can be crazy cheap on off-peak days from many major cities. BZE is a very worthwhile winter destination, but tends to be expensive to get to. Think of it as a 2 for 1 vacation, and you can even get some decent free restaurant meals in MIA with your priority pass card.

miafll
miafll

Actually for Belize, a short cruise is a far better option for your winter vacation. In fact the whole Caribbeans are far better for cruise vacation than flying to an island and plant yourself there because the costs on land are always more expensive than doing a cruise which gives you several ports plus the cruise line’s own private island which often is the best / clean beach than any you find on the islands unless you pay big bucks to stay at a resort..

iahphx
iahphx

Well, the cruise could be cheaper, but comparing a week on Caye Caulker (a cheap destination, btw) to a brief cruise ship visit to Belize is like comparing a Disney World vacation to a Sanibel villa rental. Just two totally different types of vacations. Most of the people who stay on the islands aren’t looking to be part of a cruise ship herd. Anyone who’s been in Belize for a day on a cruise ship and thinks they’ve “seen Belize” is kidding themselves. Now maybe they don’t actually want to see Belize, but that’s another story — and another vacation!

It seems 5k fare corresponds to when paid fare from MIA-BZE is $80. A decent redemption, but not amazing I guess? I am tempted to settle down with this option.

Show us your BEST LAX-BCN gem with this “deal”.

James
James

Can this be combined with Reduced Mileage awards?

Justin

Raleigh to London 19.5k AA miles, but that’s during off season (and a brief bit right after) when it’s only 22.5k full price. The discounted price rises to 22-26k during the peak season vs 30k regular price. Not bad but not a huge discount. The best news is the non-stop RDU-LHR flight is only 7.5 hours and only costs $5.60.

The return flight from London is a crappy redemption option since the taxes are $175/ticket. Much of the rest of Europe has departure taxes closer to $80-ish. I guess saving 5-10k off the normal 30k cost isn’t bad.

iahphx
iahphx

Think Spain and MIA or LAX. And think creatively what you can do with these. Taxes are less than 50 bucks.

Justin

Tips on using Spain-MIA when originating in RDU? Best I saw was 16k MIA-RDU direct and maybe I could find a BA on AA-metal redemption RDU-MIA for 7500.

Otherwise it’s RDU-MIA-PHL-MAD and a 20+ hr flight just to shave 0 to 6500 pts off the normal 22.5-30k redemption.

iahphx
iahphx

Can you find a BCN-LAX itinerary that stops in CLT? That’s what you’d need. And outbound you’d want to visit London and then take somebody like Ryanair to Spain.

Obviously these deals require significantly flexibility or tremendous luck. If you’re on a tight schedule with specific travel dates, it’s probably not going to work (although I must say that folks in MIA and LAX willing to fly coach and wanting to visit Spain should DEFINITELY be taking advantage of this tremendous offer). I’m not sure how good the RDU-LHR fares are, but if I lived in North Carolina, I’d be working hard to see if I could find something worthwhile here.

frogger
frogger

Looking at BWI to MCO it seems pretty worthless. Southwest has 9 nonstop flights per day from BWI to MCO at cheap prices. The 5k on AA requires flying BWI to Charlotte and then Charlotte to MCO. If you want to fly direct on American BWI to MCO on AA it is 12.5k miles each way.

Al
Al

Just spent 20 minutes looking and don’t see any direct American flights from BWI to MCO. Do you mean DCA?

I would much rather spend 12.5k AA each way than the 10-15k SW points each way normally needed for direct BWI-MCO.

iahphx
iahphx

Yeah, that’s not a route where this sale is likely to be useful. If you have flexibility, there are many crazy cheap fares from the mid-Atlantic to Florida, even in peak season. Frontier’s fares start at 20 bucks, and AA , Jetblue and others often match (not $20, but $60 is common). The fares will be higher on peak days, and perhaps then you can also look at going Avios for 7500 miles.

frogger
frogger

Oh you are right there are no direct flights. I wonder why they are making a web special when they have no direct flights between the cities. Seems a bad deal.

sdsearch
sdsearch

AA has started to use “married flight” logic for awards, where you can get connecting award flights AAA-BBB-CCC even though nonstop flights AAA-BBB or BBB-CCC are NOT available as awards. So there may be no (saver) awards at all on some direct longhaul flights, and thus be happy to get a discount on connections if connections is all that you can get as a (saver) award anyway.

frogger
frogger

And meanwhile their nonstop flight is empty.

sdsearch
sdsearch

It could be that they’re reserving it for other connections. For example, let’s say AA flies nonstop to XXX from both DFW and LAX. DFW-XXX nonstop may not be available, but LAX-DFW-XXX is available, and then LAX-XXX nonstop may not be available, but DFW-LAX-XXX is available. So maybe they just want to fill up ALL of their flights with connecting passengers rather than nonstop passengers? (Remember, every nonstop flight is also a connecting flight from SOMEWHERE else!)

Cynic hat on: Hmm, maybe they’re getting kickbacks from airport concession operators and they need you to spend hours at a connecting airport to (they hope) spend money there? (Of course, those with status or flying business or with a lounge pass service membership might just a lounge. But remember, at most of AA’s lounges, you have to pay for food beyond soup and snacks.)

Ben G
Ben G

Booked MIA>MAD and BCE>LAX for 2 ppl @37,000 AA and $105. INSANE.

iahphx
iahphx

Did AA pull some or all of these awards? I just looked for LAX-BCN tickets and they’re not 6000 miles anymore. They’re full price. What about the others? I guess this was a mistake award!

I’m pretty sure AA will honor them because it was a pretty obscure deal that even many of the folks who read about it didn’t appreciate it. And what could AA argue: that their sales are only sucky, so nobody should “believe” a good one was real? 🙂

EDIT: Just checked TPG and there are multiple reports that all 4 int’l deals disappeared sometime last night. You snooze you lose, I guess.

That and when you click on the special, just out of curiosity, it’s 66k from LAX – BCN, more than biz!! hahah!!
