American Airlines Launches SimplyMiles (AmEx Offers for All Airline Members – Works On Any Mastercard)

Update 4/3/20: New CVS/Best Buy deals added.

Update 3/3/20: New CVS/Walgreens deals have been added.

Update 2/4/20: You no longer need a cobranded American Airlines credit card to use SimplyMiles. So long as you have an AA miles account and a Mastercard, you can make use of the program. (ht GCG)

Update 1/2/2020: Terms have been updated to state it’ll work on any Visa, American Express or Mastercard but Visa & American Express cards still not working. In addition some new interesting offers:

  • Earn 1,000 miles after spending $45+ at CVS
  • Earn 150/500 miles for spending $50+ at Walgreens

Hat tip to reader LAG

Update 12/18/19: Some people are being targeted for an extra 5x miles on SimplyMiles offers. Subject line is ‘<name>, here’s a gift from us to you’. Hat tip to reader YRK

Update 11/23/19: Bougie Miles points out that this will work with any Mastercard, not just Citi/Barclay co-branded cards. This means you can stack these offers with Chase/BofA offers as well. You do need a co-branded card to be able to register though.

Original post:

American Airlines has launched a new miles earning opportunity called SimplyMiles. American Airlines cardholders (Citi & Barclays) can link their card(s) to this new program after signing up using their American Airlines number and then activate personalized offers. The program works much the same as AmEx offers or Chase offers, but in stead of cash back or Membership Rewards you earn American Airline miles.

I’m not sure if American Airlines is using a third party such as Cardlytics to power these offers, or if they are doing everything internally.

My offers are very lame. There’s an option to register additional cards, but I can’t tell if there’s any advantage to doing that.

They said to come back later this week for more offers (they said that when I registered, I think). In fact, when I view my offers and try to expand the list, a bunch of them in the middle look like generic placeholders, with no name or logo of any company or any other information. So I’m presuming at least those will fill in later in the week. Whether they’ll be any better than the lame ones right now, who knows.

Btw, my BofA offers are never close to what’s mentioned here at DoC, and my Chase offers are pretty minimal on all cards except for one (which happens to be the one I opened this year and did the most recent spend on).

Btw, I registered an Aviator Biz card (since that’s what I have with me right now; I’m not home and I won’t be home — where I have a personal Aviator Red card — for a few days), so I don’t know if they tailor the offers differently for business vs personal cards or not. I don’t even know if they know what kind of card it is exactly, or if they know just enough to know it’s a Citi AA card or a Barclay AA card (or if they even know that much actually! – ie, can someone who is an AA credit card holder register a non-AA card there?).

For Chase/BofA at least, you have to be using the card. If you don’t use it, you only get a small number of not very good offers.

yup i have a chase card that gets a little use and a boa one that gets zero use, and there is a big difference in what they are ‘shown’

They may be able to tell, if Citi/Barclays limit to a particular card number range. I believe you should try registering a non-AA card. They make it sound like a card may not be required in the future.

What payment types can I use to participate in SimplyMiles?

Currently SimplyMiles is open to holders of any AAdvantage credit card. We’ll be adding more options in the near future. Stay tuned.

At least as of now, it rejcted my csr and a random vanilla when I tried to register at the same time as the citi-aa

The Card numbers is not a valid credit card number
The Card numbers 3 is not a valid credit card number

30 useless offers for me for the sock drawer aa.

I’m not sure “lame” is a strong enough description. My offer of a whopping 50 miles for a car rental would have absolutely no impact on my choice. Promotions are supposed to make you purchase, not laugh.

Wonder if these could be stacked with other in store or online rebate programs?

aubergine

That would be pretty good. I’ve gotten some triple stacks with various payment based programs. Not the base case, but fun!

First look appears mostly worthless, unless you want an AA vacation package. My DP, for what its worth:
I have a Barclays Aviator Business and it showed the following offers:
Olive Garden – 250 miles for a $75 purchase
Aldo (???) – 200 miles for a $100 purchase
Exxon Mobil – $1 mile/dollar for $20+ purchase
AA Vacations – 3 miles/dollar for $3K+ purchase
Teleflora – 650 miles for $50 purchase
4YourHealth – 500 miles for $15 purchase

Same offers here. VERY lame. Pass for now.

Same here for Citi AA. Adding Barlays AA didn’t change anything. Pathetic, but I’ll hope for better as they get it going. These are absolute no-gos for now.

These strike me as actually OK earning, though I have little interest in the vendors. These stack on top of regular earning I presume, and valued at 1.5 cents/mi those are not bad at all.

Same offers as well (Barclays).

I had 30 offers with my aviator biz. Some of the offers weren’t too bad actually.

I would not call it Amex Offers. It just confuses me even more. How is Amex providing offers for Citi/Barclays cards?

Matt

Just signed up. No good offers, but maybe the offers will get better as time passes.

“Olive Garden – Earn 250 miles on a purchase of $75 or more.”

Olive Garden is a fairly cheap restaurant. Trying to spend that much in one order for just two people would be EXTREMELY difficult. Even for like a family of four, you have to try REALLY hard to spend $75 or more in a single visit. Even alcohol prices aren’t that expensive (for restaurant alcohol).

I don’t know. Maybe I’m just cheap, lol. (Not really a “maybe”. More like a “definitely”, haha.) How much do people typically spend at Olive Garden? Do you guys and gals regularly spend more than $75 at Olive Garden? If not, would you be able to reasonably eat and drink enough (as they hope you would) to even get to $75?

aubergine
aubergine

and most of the time, if someone truly wanted to eat olive garden, they ought to be able to buy gift cards for 15% to 20% off which is better than a few miles thrown in on top. i’ll bet the end result is that all these offers are for the same overpriced merchants that constantly resort to portal boosts and gift card discounting. more worthless build a bear type of stuff…..

There is currently an Amex offer for $15 off of $50. Of this would stack I’m sure the OG offer would be more enticing.

how did I miss this…have I missed any good offers?

Mark V

I couldn’t find any mention of it but many of these offers look an awful lot like the rakuten network offers. Has anyone confirmed being able to stack this with ebates or united for in store offers?

Dayn_Perrys_Vape
Dayn_Perrys_Vape

I registered a Citi and Barclays card, not a single remotely enticing offer between the two

Be very careful, either this is a scam, or purchase of giftcard doesn’t work.

I got 1000 miles on 200 BB spending offer, bought 200 amazon GC, never got the miles.

Customer care is also bad, no number to call, and they don’t respond to your email in any substantial way.

I received this offer as well and was planning to purchase some gift cards in-store. For a useful datapoint can you confirm whether you made the purchase in-store, and whether you used an Aadvantage Mastercard?

Per the terms & conditions “Must first add offer to AAdvantage Mastercard and then use same card to redeem. Only U.S. issued AAdvantage Mastercards are eligible. Limit 1 enrolled card per card member across AA SimplyMiles program. Your enrollment of an eligible Mastercard for this offer extends only to that card. Valid at any participating location in the US and US Territories on purchases of $200 or more. Not valid for e-gift card purchases. Excludes corporate gift card purchases. Offer not valid at outlet locations.”

So if the answer is yes to both questions above then the purchase should qualify since you didn’t purchase an e-gift card or corporate gift cards. If you made the purchase online, this is excluded not directly by the terms & conditions but it says in the offer box shop in-store. Since I have never seen Amazon gift cards offered online I am going to presume you made the purchase in-store.

chris
chris

I made purchase in store, and I used my aa plat select card already registered.

Now, I did purchase blue amazon gift card (VGC, variable GC), the one with 25-200 value and asked cashier to put in 200. I don’t know if this is a problem, and I am not spending another 200 to find out.

You can try normal black amazon gift card with fixed 50 or 100 values, and see if it will work. Do post back if it works. lol

and btw, it is still annoying there is no real way to contact them. As if they really don’t care if this works.

Thanks for the additional details. If you haven’t already, I would click on the customer service link at the very bottom of the SimplyMiles website and there they have an option for transactional issues where you can free form a complaint. Not sure how responsive they are but would if it is anything like my experience with untracked online shopping portal issues it should be resolved relatively painlessly.

chris
chris

they emailed me back, 2 weeks after I contacted them, saying that gift card is also excluded, on top of e-gc and corporate gc.

Claysand
Claysand

They wouldn’t let me join without one of the AA cards listed.

So I registered with my Citi AA Platinum and added my other Mastercards.

When I clicked to add an offer to my card, it just said added. So I guess it means it is available on any of my Mastercards? I thought it would prompt me to add it to a specific card.

Does this work on Citi AA business?

Yes.

Did AA change their mileage award structure? I was looking for flights to Europe and they were around a hundred thousand miles which was substantially more than before. The search calendar looks totally different too.

Yes they did. Helluva deval 🙁

What about partner awards?

Hopefully they don’t change partner awards

I had a nightmare that they were changed too.
