American Airlines Moves Morocco To Europe From Africa On Award Chart

American Airlines has moved Morocco to Europe from Africa on it’s award chart. This means you now need less miles to redeem for travel to Morocco:

  • 30,000 miles one way in economy (previously 40,000 miles)
  • 57,500 miles one way in business (previously 75,000 miles)

Royal Air Maroc recently joined oneworld as well making this even more useful. It’s nice to see that American Airlines isn’t just shutting down accounts and increasing baggage fees during this pandemic.

So bag fees apply now as well I’m guessing. Super sneaky.

Only if you do an economy award. 1st checked bag is always free for confirmed business class passengers, including on business awards.

1 bag on Econ Awards to Europe is always free. They only added bag fees for basic econ tickets

The bad news: one can no longer transit DOH on a single award. I did RAK-DOH-MIA once — long flight, but very comfy in J and super convenient schedule.

If Qatar exists OneWorld as they keep threatening to do, that’ll be the least of your worries if you like flying them on awards.

you mean only for flights to/from Morocco; the best AA award continues to be USA-Africa via Doha QR business class for 75k

Good move! Rarely do they do something which might benefit us.

Except this also makes it impossible to use Air Maroc for intra-Africa rewards without having to redeem two rewards, since you’re leave Africa to fly to ‘Europe’ and then back to Africa. I think it’s a kind of shitty move.

They may well make an exception for Air Maroc to Africa. Keep in mind they have exceptions here and there on their award chart. There have been exceptions for Qatar connections to parts of Africa, for example.

No change for required number of miles for business class or is that a typo?

Yes, it was 75,000 earlier.  William Charles

Not quite completely fixed, it says previously “75,00” not “75,000”. 🙂

Must be a reversed-digits (575 vs 75) typo. If you look in the linked source article, it says there:

American charges the following number of miles for travel between the US and Africa:

40,000 AAdvantage miles one-way in economy
75,000 AAdvantage miles one-way in business class

Meanwhile they charge the following number of miles for travel between the US and Europe:

30,000 AAdvantage miles one-way in economy
57,500 AAdvantage miles one-way in business class
