Back in 2019/2020 American Airlines shut down many accounts for due to alleged credit card rewards ‘abuse’. This is often referred to as the Toby shutdown. Part of the shutdown was a lifetime ban from the program, although many people have created new accounts to avoid this ban.
It seems that a new wave of shutdowns has occurred for people that have created new accounts (1,2). This has always been a huge risk with creating a new account as sometimes the account would be shutdown but you wouldn’t realize until you were at the airport.
