American Express Confirms Overly Generous Spending Offers Were Sent Out In Error

Yesterday a number of readers reported receiving extremely generous spend offers on their American Express cards. For example one reader received an offer where if they spent $3,000 they would receive $3,000 back and the deal could be done a total of three times. At the time I said this was likely an error and American Express have confirmed this to TPG:

[W]e did send out a Membership Rewards promotion to a small, isolated set of Card Members through our online, mobile app and email channels. Unfortunately, there was an error in the way the banner displayed the promotion to Card Members who received it via email

In the actual terms of the e-mail offer it did have the correct information (e.g spend $3,000 and get 3,000 Membership Rewards points back) so I don’t think you’d be able to fight this to get the generous offer honored. I do think American Express should send out an e-mail informing cardholders of this error, as I can see some regular cardholders being confused and spending when they normally wouldn’t.
