American Express Gold Card Will Now Earn 4x at Restaurants Worldwide (Not Limited to USA)

The American Express Gold card which currently earns 4x at U.S. restaurants only will earn 4x at all restaurants worldwide.

The newly revamped Amex Gold card earns 4x at restaurants, unlimited. One of the common gripes about the card are folks who use it internationally without realizing that the 4x restaurant category is limited to the U.S. American Express has changed that, and beginning June 6, 2019, the 4x earn rate will apply to restaurants worldwide.

This is according to recently closed credit card statement, sent over to us by our friend Grant from Travelwithgrant.

Certainly welcome news. The other issue people have with the 4x restaurant category is the inconsistency with which the 4x points have been posting due to restaurants being miscategorized. Hopefully that issue is gradually improving, and hopefully international restaurants will be coded properly as well.

Just be aware that the 4x supermarket category (up to $25,000 per year) is still limited to U.S. only.

“You mean to tell me I have to buy this Vietnamese pho from your street cart with dong? What kind of 21st century establishment are you running here?! Start accepting gold cards, fam.”

“The newly revamped Amex Gold card earns 4x at restaurants, up to $25,000 per year.” – the $25k limit is for groceries, not restaurants.

Still says “US restaurant” on my benefit page.

yep several DPs of cardmembers excluded for “rewards abuse”, be ready for amex shutdown

It’s not Jun 6th yet.

Good luck finding an international restaurant that takes amex.

Many restaurants in Europe are accepting ApplePay now, so you can load your AmEx card into your phone and pay with that.

There’s a great big world out there outside of Europe, and most of it shudders when you pull out amex

Jags

That’s not how it works. The establishment still needs to accept whatever card is loaded into Apple Pay.

Doesn’t work that way with Google Pay at least. Had places accept Visa via Google Pay and reject Amex via Google Pay.

I’ve experienced the same, but that’s not how it’s supposed to work. This is some kind of erroneous setting on the payment terminal that eventually gets fixed.

I saw a food truck with a Square Reader in Canada once, all Square Readers take AMEX, at least in Canada.

… but Square Readers seem much, much less common overseas whereas here in the US most individually owned restaurants are using Square Readers.

If this change comes to more categories and cards, Amex will definitely be returning to my wallet ASAP! For now, Citi/Chase it is…

I can’t see how amex isn’t dominating everyone’s wallet with for everyday use with gold + bbp.

I’m not clear on how some people STILL place value on MR’s. They had their moment in the sun, what 20-30 years ago. But that rewards program is a joke.

If you are over age 60 or if you once had a godawful or non-existent credit and want validation that you have fixed yourself, then those are the two scenarios where amex may dominate your wallet. In nearly all other use cases, the consumer card world has moved on from AmEx.

Rob

I dunno about that. You might be using them wrong. I get sick value from them.

RobbTPC

Naw, you just don’t know how to use them lol

The coding (or lack of coding) for restaurants is a major hassle for me. If that problem didn’t exist I’d use it all the time. If I have to spend time auditing statements and calling or chatting with Amex chasing down MR points, i quickly looses its appeal to me. Not having that problem with Chase.

I really hope they get better.

I want to keep using my BBP but I idk, I just don’t feel like I know how to use Membership Rewards points right. I haven’t redeemed any MR points yet and we are up to 180,000+ MRs.

I’m sure it’ll be as big of a crapshoot on things coding as expected as it currently is in the US.

In the last decade, in Japan, it has gone from almost always not accepted to almost always accepted.

Great timing for me!

I’m not talking about whether Amex is accepted, I’m talking about whether the charge codes properly. For example my work cafeteria codes as “business services” on Amex and thus doesn’t get any dining multipliers on Amex, but on Visa it codes as dining as expected, so I get the 3x on the CSR.

Same with my cafeteria. AMEX is such a pain!

Chuck

Same exact issue. Amex coding is wacky. CSR has figured it out, it can’t be that hard.

Snorlax
Snorlax

Cafeterias and food vendors at event venues rarely code as restaurants on any cards, they usually take their coding from their parent organization. I’ve just switched to using my USAA Limitless for those purchases.

I’m glad CSR has figured it out.

Yes, acceptance is an issue. However, if you’re lucky and Amex is accepted then you don’t have to worry about dynamic currency conversion. Neither you no a waiter can press Dollars instead of Euros.

Great news. In so many places I have been scammed by DCC when using my Chase Sapphire card. I always file disputes with Chase, and they decide in my favor, but I think they don’t bother going back to the merchant for a few dollars.

Just to clarify, isn’t the 25K limit only applicable to supermarkets? Text above implies restaurants. “earns 4x at restaurants, up to $25,000 per year.”

Roger

I don’t think it does…

Roronoa

I think you’re right, restaurants are unlimited and the $25k is limited to groceries.

Loveee my grocery that codes as a restaurant 🙂

Where does that happen?

“The newly revamped Amex Gold card earns 4x at restaurants, up to $25,000 per year.”
– The 25k limit is only for supermarkets. Restaurants is unlimited 4x.

But do you have to call or message Amex every month to have the 4x restaurant points post to your Membership Rewards account? — or has this gotten better?

Gold

Does this apply to Gold ameriprise version?

Electroman
Electroman

I hold that card, and… I got an email from AMEX today that confirms that yes, it does! The terms seem the same as the regular gold – unlimited worldwide restaurants and $25k limit on groceries for 4xMR, plus 3x on airfare. The $120 dining credit is probably not there, although the info from AMEX is ambiguous about that.

I’m un-sock-drawering that card!

Electroman
Electroman

That email “Your Ameriprise Gold Card Essentials” says it does, but – the “Benefits” tab for that card when I log into my account doesn’t mention it – so I’ll be the data point I’d like to see tonight at a local restaurant.

Electroman
Electroman

The results are in and – drumroll please – no, Ameriprise gold doesn’t get these benefits. I get 2x at restaurants. Not surprising, but a little disappointing.

This is definitely good news, especially for trips to Canada where American Express seems to be pretty widely accepted. In Europe, it is hit or miss but I would say 1 in 3 or maybe 1 in 4 restaurants will take AMEX and the higher end places usually do, so this is only a good thing. What sucks is that I just got back from a trip and left this card behind because of that. Wish this had started before that.

RobbTPC
RobbTPC

Same. I was in Europe last week. This would have been nice. Luckily I got the Uber Visa, so I was still able to earn some solid cash back.

Can’t wait for the reports of bonus category points crediting issues.

Great timing! Just about to head out to Japan tomorrow for a month of heavy restaurant spending. Have the CSR as backup but would prefer the 4x AmEx points. My experience is Japanese establishments that take credit cards generally take AmEx too. A question — before the points hit on the following statement, does anyone know how we can tell if the categorization was correct? Do I check the line item description on the Web site to see if it says something like “Food/Beverage”? Thanks.

Should tell you within 5 business days. It used to only do so when you clicked “Preview New Version,” but I recently saw it in the classic view as well.

They must have realized other than US chain hotel restaurants no restaurant outside the US was accepting Amex.

Mario
Mario

I guess your definition of traveling outside the US is limited because I have been to Asia Europe and Africa this year and no restaurant that I ever gone to has ever refuse to accept my American Express card.

JAS
JAS

You must’ve only eaten at places like McDonald’s or super high-end restaurants because the vast majority of restaurants I have visited that are your general mom & pop shops refuse Amex abroad.

Zaos
Zaos

Or realized that the card was being sock drawered when travelling. That’s what I do. Makes no sense to keep that card in my wallet when not in the US.
