American Express Green CLEAR Benefit Increases To $189 (From $100)

American Express has announced that the CLEAR benefit on the American Express Green card will be increased to $189 from $119 on November 15, 2022. This is the same benefit that the Platinum card offers and covers a full priced single membership (you can get a single membership for $119 through Delta or United and then also add a companion for an additional $60). There are also frequently offers where you can get free airline miles or Uber credit for signing up for CLEAR.

Can you use this credit to sign some one else if you are not going to use it for yourself?

Nice to have. I may just cancel the PLT card and keep the Green although lounge buddy is very much useless. With Corporate Advantage the Green is a $75 card and this is a small bonus perk.

$189 would cover 2 memberships. Makes this card a keeper if you currently pay for CLEAR for 2.

It also codes as 3x Travel. So more reason to max it out.

The entire portfolio of amex benefits should be increased to keep step with cost inflation.

It’s a great start, but there still needs to be another credit to make this card worth keeping, or they need to add additional 3X categories.. Too many redundant befits with the AmEx Platinum. If they added 3X on gas, I’d probably keep this card. However, canceling this year because I can’t justify the annual fee verses the number of points I’m earning on it.

Not everyone has (or even wants) the Platinum

$150 AF for 3x travel/dining is a joke. AMEX Green doesn’t even outdo Wells Fargo Propel/Autograph. Earning MR is more valuable than cash back, but $150 more? idk about that.

Multipliers don’t tell the whole story because the Green is now entering keeper card status if you value the Clear benefit. Instead of paying $179 for 2, you pay $150 via the annual fee, saving you a further $29. The only option cheaper than this is via a student membership at $120 for 2. Everything else (3X multipliers, transfer partners, LoungeBuddy credit, insurances, protections, etc.) is just gravy on top

I don’t think others care much about Clear

Totally disagree. I have the Platinum, Gold, AND Green, and I’m canceling the former two after the new year. Most of the benefits of the Platinum I either have on other cards, or aren’t worth anything to me. Centurion Lounges and Delta SkyClubs are nice, but I’ve a family, and the access isn’t viable.

For less than annual fee on the Platinum alone, I get far more useful perks with my Sapphire Preferred, Amex Everyday Preferred, Amex Green, Delta SkyMiles Gold, and Hilton Surpass. The Amex Gold is weak compared with the EveryDay Preferred, which earns 4.5x on groceries, 3x on gas, and 1.5x everywhere else, which better align with my spending.

The Amex Green and EveryDay Preferred are the best Amex combo for regular people who value basic travel perks and maximizing points earning.

You know what, I love clear. The people are super nice. The machines work well. It was easy to enroll. I usually take the first flight of the day so I’m at the airport at 4am or before, so they’re not open yet. I use them about 50% of my flights. All good experiences. I get free from plat Amex. I did the United deal as outlined above.

Agreed, it’s such an amazing experience. This year I’ve used it probably a dozen times so far, and most times you don’t save too much additional time compared to TSA Pre (for me, it’s a range of 30seconds to 15mins depending on whether it’s peak travel day/time).

However what I really love is the reduced anxiety of not having to fumble with all my stuff to take out my ID, then making sure to place it back in a secure place right before security – especially as a female who does not usually wear clothing with pockets.

I have both Plat and Green already, so this particular change doesnt really affect me, but I’ll probably be more inclined to help enroll friends who don’t have it yet.
