Update 7/14/21: Deal is still available. Hat tip to Yet Another Redditor.

The Offer

Direct Link to offer

  • American Express is offering a sign up bonus of two free weekend night certificates on the American Express Hilton Surpass card (formerly Ascend) card after $3,000 in spend within the first three months

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $95
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 12X Hilton Honors Bonus Points at hotels and resorts in the Hilton portfolio worldwide
    • 6X Hilton Honors Bonus Points at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. restaurants, and U.S. gas stations (temporary bonus on this, currently, through July 31st)
    • 3X Hilton Honors Bonus Points on all other eligible purchases
  • 10 free priority pass lounge passes
  • Complimentary Hilton Honors gold status. Earn Diamond status after spending $40,000 in purchases within a calendar year
  • One Weekend Night Reward at a hotel or resort in the Hilton portfolio after spending $15,000 in purchases on the card in a calendar year
  • No foreign transaction fees

Our Verdict

Previous best offer was 150,000 points + $100 statement credit or 130,000 points + free night certificate. Personally don’t think this bonus is nearly as good as those offers, but interesting that American Express/Hilton is seemingly showing these offers when using the Hilton WiFi. Hopefully this leads to other higher bonuses in the future. As always if you have any questions, read this post about American Express cards first.

I’ve emailed in, there’s currently a 200,000 point offer available on the Surpass. Best offer they’ve ever had IMO.

Has anybody seen this offer again lately?

If you play this right you could really ball out at a premium hotel for 3 nights (2 certs in offer + 1 more after 15K spend). For example, you could stay at the Waldorf or LXR in Vegas for 3 nights-this would normally cost close to 300K points. Yea, one could argue that 150K in points is better but there is a sweet spot for this offer if you are inclined to want a luxury long weekend.

If I didn’t already have an Aspire I would sign up for this and then take an Aspire upgrade offer in a year or so.

Are there any upgrade offers on the no fee card?

This card usually has a 150k sign up offer. 2 free nights could be worth up to 240k (only 2 hotels) but more realistically up to 180k. You can’t have 5th night free so if you devalue those by 20% accordingly, you’re back at a real value of 150k points with more restrictive expiration, so I wouldn’t say it’s a particularly amazing offer.

Exactly and eloquently put. Also, it’s easier to keep points active. Good like extending expiration of “free” weekend night certificates beyond the pandemic.

I have the Annual Fee Surpass card. Is Amex running promotions for people already holding the card? Why am I paying an annual fee for on this card? Shall I close this account?

You’re paying for Hilton Gold, 10 Priority Pass visits, the opportunity to earn a free weekend night, and the opportunity to earn extra HH points on stays and HH points on everyday expenses. If you don’t like it, open a no-fee (base) Hilton Honors card, then downgrade this one to another Hilton Honors card. Just don’t downgrade in the first year.

An alternative is to call in when the card renews and ask for a retention offer to keep it for another year (then keep it for a full year).

You can also look into upgrading your card to the hilton aspire which does have a higher annual fee ($450) but gives you a free weekend night each year, diamond status, $250 resort credit and $250 flight incidental credit. That could be worth your while. Between my wife and I we have 5 hilton aspires just because they bring so much positive value to us each year.

If these get extended out past the travel restrictions, this could be worth more than almost any promotion at the right properties.

I had a annual certificate expire in April. I called them and they said they extended that cert and the current year cert to 10/21. This was with AMEX Aspire.

is the 2 free weekend night to ANY hotel? Also does it have to be weekends only? Sorry I can’t seem to find much detail on the certificates itself

Unexpired and new Free Weekend Night Rewards issued through December 31, 2020 can now be used any night of the week (not just on weekends). And new Free Weekend Night Rewards issued from May 1 through December 31, 2020 will now be valid for 24 months (rather than 12 months) from the date of issuance.2

Any Hilton chain hotel, even Waldorf Astorias.

The cert is for standard rooms, no premium rooms or suites. The room must be available for points to book.

Wow, thanks! Didn’t know that. I should spend $15k annually on my Surpass, after all.

I’ve had Marriott certificates extended by a year. Not sure with Hilton but it could be possible.

That’s strange, because Amex extended the redemption period of the free weekend night (that you get after $15k purchases on the Surpass card) to 24 months. It should also have these extended.

EDIT: Looks like they’d be extended automatically
