American Express Mailing Out Checks for Annual Fee Refund Error

A number of readers and r/churning members and others are getting a check in the mail from Amex of an annual fee refund adjustment for some previous annual fee which was supposedly not reimbursed properly.

What’s odd is that a lot of people can’t quite figure out what the check is for as they’ve already been reimbursed for any annual fees. Maybe their memories are off or else Amex is making an error. Some are even getting a bit more than their annual fees, perhaps interest? Bank Error in your Favor, Collect $200.

We posted earlier how some people are getting an adjustment check for an Amex Offer for AT&T which had not been credited properly a while back. Seems Amex just audited their system and is now sending out checks for any errors.

My prorated Aspire annual fee was charged multiple times but I also got multiple refunds of various amounts. Total annual fee for Aspire came to $395. No complaints here.

Got a check of 97.xx for my Hilton ascend card which was closed last October, even though the 95 annual fee was refunded at that time.

Couple of years ago I got a 450 dollar check from Amex , thought it was a scammed. I called them, and they couldn’t figure out for which account i was getting a refund.

So I commented about this before but just in case people missed:
When you downgrade the card from platinum to something else the first month’s fee is still charged to the platinum and then 11 months charged to the new card. It is not by 365 days. So there is no benefit of converting as soon as the fee is charged for the new membership year.
I found this out the hard way.
