[Update] Numerous American Express Bonus Adjustments Posting Now for Referrals and More

[Update 6/17/19: Some more people are seeing an adjustment now for the $200 AT&T credit, mentioned below. It’s even showing up on some closed cards. (ht r/churning) Also, many people are getting an annual fee refund check which comes from some past Amex mistake, apparently.]

A few reports popped up in the past few days of American Express sending bonus adjustments to those who deserve it or owe it, even from many years ago.

  • Numerous readers in the comments got an email today to expect an adjustment for referral bonus credit from a long time ago which never posted “due to a technical error”. The points aren’t showing yet, but hopefully it’ll come soon. Multiple Reddit members report the same.
  • An r/churning member (I can’t find the link right now) was told by Amex that they can cancel their MB Platinum and get a prorated adjustment. This person wasn’t even a churner at the time, and knew nothing about clawbacks, and they cancelled without realizing they’d get a claw back. After claw back, they called in numerous times with no success. Now, the points just reappeared on their own.
  • On a similar vein, many people who returned items for their $50 Saks credit, are now seeing reversals on that credit. This is even for credits from many months back, and even on a closed Amex card. (If your card is closed, be sure to pay off your debt to Amex – they should send you a bill in the mail – else it’ll end up dinging your credit report.)
  • Over the past couple of weeks, many have noted getting the $200 AT&T Amex Offer credit from a few months back – it finally came through now.
  • Other miscellaneous points adjustments and credits are reported by readers in the comments here. These are for things like miscoded stores, missing Amex Offers, and other missing promotional points.

A common thread in most of these cases are that these are cases which people followed up with Amex – in some cases multiple times – but never got credit. So it may be that they went back and reviewed all their contact records and issued points in cases where they suspected legal liability.

I’m guessing there was just a system update or a system review which resulted in numerous adjustments, but it’s also possible it’s just random. Let us know if in the comments if you’ve gotten any adjustments yourself, positive or negative.

I got a Saks adjustment for a return that happened in August and it just hit about a week ago.

DP: Applied for Skymiles Reserve in November. Never had card previously and no popup. Was told in January that I would not receive the bonus. No adjustment for me. I have had all kinds of amex cards in the past so really not surprised.

Don’t think we’ve seen DPs of no pop-up bonus denials getting their bonuses yet…

There are tons of them

Link to these DPs please? I have only seen a couple people squeeze their bonus out of Amex after Amex denied them the bonus after meeting the spend under the new gaming language. I’d love it if Amex finally paid people out on these!

I think you don’t have to worry. I had the similar experience but ended up fine. I applied for the business gold card two weeks ago (a bad choice). Upon activation, the representative told me no signup bonus offer was registered and she opened a ticket. I called in this morning, the representative told me there is actually a signup bonus offer in my account and the offer only shows up a few days after the account is activated.

was it one of those targeted offers via email or snail mail or did you just apply from the AMEX site?

I am still sore from my staples experience.

Amex reminds me of the young hot sweet innocent girl that trusts everyone until she is used and abused by couple of boy friends and ends up hating all men.

There, is that still “problematic”?.

Data point:
Simple version: Spending bonus was not issued by Amex.

Long story:
I applied and received Amex Golden Delta credit card. Seeking the spending bonus, I spent over 1,000 USD for a stated/promised 30,000 Delta mileages.

My reward was not issued for reasons obscure to me.

First time I contacted Amex: I was told to wait 6-8 weeks.
2nd time I did: I was told Amex has total freedom to cancel any stated rewards in the offers if Amex suspects any misuse or abuse.
The implication sounds like Amex was to some degree accusing me to be an abuser in a “polite” way.
Full of indignation, I contacted a 3rd time: I asked for a confirmation that I was really suspected by Amex, but was instead told nothing was wrong my account, and the reward would be issued to me later.

Now it has been three weeks after my last contact with Amex, but no rewards have been issued to me.

I essentially gave up. What reactions I am contemplating is not relevant here for this post, so I would reserve my rampage for other audience.

My statement closed overnight last night and I received a $34 credit and a $34 debit on my Centurion card along with the annual fee. So I guess it’s time to call American Express and see if I have any retention bonuses.

looking for DPs of AMEX doing better on the non-popup bonus denials. was that just a temporary systemic problem?

I was emailed the following this morning on my Hilton Surpass Amex (now Hilton Ascend). I had referred 2 family members to the Surpass card in September 2017 and Amex didn’t give me the referral bonus. I contacted them a bunch of times about it and I’m pretty sure that eventually I got a supervisor to manually add points to my account. I do not see any additional points on my account, but maybe they will show up in a few days? Here’s the email:

“We want to let you know that we’ve issued a reward bonus to your account listed above. Making sure you know about any mistakes we find is important, so we’d like to explain what happened and what we’ve done to make it right.

“What happened

“You made a referral through our Member Get Member program, but due to a technical error, the identification code which should have mapped you to your referral wasn’t saved when they applied for a Card. As a result, we didn’t issue your reward bonus points. We apologize for not issuing your reward bonus when you earned it.

“We issued the reward bonus to your account

“To make things right, we’ve now issued the reward bonus to your account. You’ll see this reflected on an upcoming billing statement.”

This exact thing happened to me, at the same time, on the same card.

Yep. Same with the Surpass. (Mine is now a Hilton Honors card) I had fought for months. Even gave zip code, email address and last 5 of card (of the one I referred) as they asked for back then.

Email also says “We’ve taken care of everything for you

While there’s nothing further you need to do, you can track your credits, manage your account or reach us anytime online at americanexpress.com”

No points posted yet.

Got this email last year, referred 6 people over 2 cards in 2017 and got nothing, filed CFPB complaint then and Amex refused to do anything, then in 2018 I got the referral and email for 2 of the referrals, but didn’t get the other 4. I eventually gave up as Amex was impossible to deal with.

Got a Saks adjustment last week and think finally figured out why. It was for $5 and was probably from the Saks Amex offer last year that was applied along with my Saks $50 amex plat credit on a purchase.

Any speculation on why amex is doing this if their t&c say they are allowed to claw back bonuses? Are they doing it just to cover their asses if they get sued?

In controlling cost, they hurt the bystanders

My guess is that senior management told their underlings to clean up the mess and just get things right without specifying whether the changes would be in AMEX favor or not.

Still nothing from the 100k Amex Platinum they clawed back a few years ago 🙁

New DP, no downside for trying since I had to pay my AT&T broadband bill anyway, couldn’t contact AMEX but $200 credit just popped into my A/C.. Pleasant surprise.

Got an offer in September 2018 from honor@h1.hilton.com as in https://www.doctorofcredit.com/new-american-express-authorized-user-bonuses-hilton-everything-you-need-to-know/ and added 4 authorized users. Met spending requirement but never got bonus points. Called both Amex and Hilton for a few times. Never honored, saying no offer found in my account. Finally gave up.
