[Claw Back] American Express Platinum Cardholders Getting $35 Uber Credit on their Cancelled Cards

[Update 12/9/19: Some on r/churning are reporting their credits have now been clawed back. Others are still seeing their credit intact.]

The American Express Platinum card offers a $15 monthly Uber credit; during the month of December the credit is bumped up to $35. Those who have cancelled their Platinum cards during 2019 are seeing today the $35 credit pop up, despite the fact that they have not been getting these credits after the cancellation.

Apparently, the $35 credit is coded separately and goes out to everyone who was a Platinum cardholder during the year. It may or may not be intentional, but regardless, it’s useful to know and not let the credit go to waste.

spent about $25 of it this evening and then two hours later the remaining $10 was deducted.

Confirmed. Just checked and my Uber credit is gone! Reddit is screwing us all up! Damaged done! By now, I believe the RAT has closed all loopholes!

To little, to late!

Weird situation. I just checked Uber, and it still shows the $35 credit. But it’s not showing up in Uber Eats now (it did when I checked earlier today. 🙁

Update: It was clawed back in Uber also, but my balance didn’t reflect it. There’s a $35 purchase in my Uber transactions; it just wasn’t deducted from my Uber Cash. I’m sure the Uber Cash balance will be corrected shortly.

RAT has been working overtime, but I can’t get too upset over this. I’m back to the same position before the credit.

Every day is an adventure with AMEX as you log in and start to tremble nervously, taking your first peek and wondering what may have been clawed back or reversed overnight.

Slightly off topic question. Does Amex give you a 1099 for the savings you get from using Amex offers? I’m precariously close to 1500 in 1099-Int and I don’t want to go through the extra form and I presume extra taxes

No, those are rebates and exempt (by law) from the 1099 requirements.

It’s when there is no payment on your part but you get a reward for it that results in a 1099 for interest (e.g. sign up for a bank account, do direct deposits, and get 60k miles — you didn’t spend money to get it, so it’s interest; same with the referrals).

If I have referral monies saved but not redeemed, it only counts when redeemed, correct? I’m sitting on about 250 in rewards and 60000+ miles.

Thanks

Frank

If you received points/cash for the referrals this year then it’ll be taxable come April. It is NOT based on when you redeem it (although there have been arguments presented suggesting it should be). If it’s over $600 then Amex will send you a 1099 some time in Jan-March.

Reddit needs to be closed!!! Obviously, Amx and most likely, other banks are monitoring Redddit and obtaining information to find their own loopholes. In other words, it is like Reddit has a virus!

Also, the RAT is the spy and it is all over Reddit, to say the least!!!

I cxl’ed my 2nd Platinum in October (after I used the $15 credit of course). No 2nd $15 credit last month. Got the 2nd $35 credit on Dec 1, but it was removed this morning.

I would not be surprised if Amex goes one step further and starts billing closed cards for got credit that was used. Just saying if you use it be ready to pay Amex for it in the future.

My uber cash balance still shows over $100 in credit despite cancelling all my plats over the past year or so

Hahahaha. Amex is quickly becoming a joke

This seems to be more of an issue with Uber than AMEX…
