[Claw Back] American Express Platinum Cardholders Getting $35 Uber Credit on their Cancelled Cards

[Update 12/9/19: Some on r/churning are reporting their credits have now been clawed back. Others are still seeing their credit intact.]

The American Express Platinum card offers a $15 monthly Uber credit; during the month of December the credit is bumped up to $35. Those who have cancelled their Platinum cards during 2019 are seeing today the $35 credit pop up, despite the fact that they have not been getting these credits after the cancellation.

Apparently, the $35 credit is coded separately and goes out to everyone who was a Platinum cardholder during the year. It may or may not be intentional, but regardless, it’s useful to know and not let the credit go to waste.

… until you get a bill from Amex for it 17 months later.

Highly doubt it… The monthly ones credit for 1-2 months after cancellation too I’ve noticed in the past 3 years.

I wouldn’t put it past AmEx to Clawback for 36 months -if they are willing to clawback <$10 Dell credits

Clawback by sending you a statement (but not sure if a SOL exist in different states on how much time they have to bill).

Agreed. I am so glad I never got in bed with Amex. Amex would not need to do clawbacks if they coded their promotions properly to begin with. Amex has the worst coders on the planet it seems, but the best marketers so people tend to perceive Amex as prestigious.

Amex cards do not work everywhere yet they have the gall to charge vendors more. Amex is the the king of the balance chase, slashed limits, and clawbacks because of their own mistakes. They act like high rollers but they are just nits who punish customers for their own mistakes or lack of judgement (giving high credit lines only to later slash them en masse). I have read on the fico forums that amex soft pulls everyone’s credit report every few days and then they slash limits at the first sign of perceived trouble. Every day there are multiple posts of limit slashing from amex with huge threads of cutting en masse because people “were not using their credit lines” but people continue to defend amex.

I really have no idea why so many people consider Amex prestigious when they are just pretenders except that they have great marketing and people assign value to things they pay more for. Amex cards are a brick in many countries and smaller towns.

If people make money from Amex cards then great. But I think far too many people pay for their Amex cards just because they think holding a platinum card makes them a better person. Sad really.

Yeah or a 1099 with a value of $350 because they value Uber credits at 10x

Ya given Amex lately, I’m concerned they’d claw it back way after the fact

Roger

there’s DP reporting that amex rep explicitly said there will be no clawback in this case.

Yeah, waaay more difficult to claw this back

That’s seems extremely hard to enforce.
The credits expire at the end of the month. How will Amex know which users spent the credit? Should I get billed if I don’t use the credit. What if I spent the credit unknowingly? Uber credits are always charged before your primary payment method.

I don’t think Amex can argue that this is abuse since the user isn’t actively doing anything to get it. There’s no exploit.

If someone wired you $350 by mistake and you used it, you can claim that you “spent it unknowingly” or “isn’t actively doing anything to get it”, but it is hard to say whether the bank/judge will side with you 😉

Amex is just using “little” stuff like this as a means to initiate a clawback…and then completely shut a person down and jack ALL their points in the name of “abuse” or “gaming.”

Mentioning the credit posting outside of what Amex intends is news, yes. What each person does with that info is on them. But actively encouraging people to exploit it and terming it as a “bonanza” just feels a bit “off” or “wrong.”

Best of luck to anyone using the credit — I fear you will need it in the future.

I didn’t get credit. Just canceled card last month

This really isn’t knew. I cancelled a card in June and have never not gotten the credit every month.

Is this only if you left your cards loaded in the Uber App? I took mine out so it wouldn’t get accidentally charged. Maybe I will re add them

Removed 2 canceled Platinums from Uber app for the same precaution. I just tried adding each back in the app (both cards closed in 2019), but both were declined, likely due to the Uber app placing a $1 test/pending charge on new payment methods.

Lesson learned, leave Platinums in the app.

I have two Platinum cards saved in the Uber app – one is active and the other one was cancelled earlier this year by Amex (MS version). Even though the MS Plat was cancelled in April, I have been able to get the monthly $15 credit along with the credit from the other active card for the past 7 months. From the app, it shows that those two credits were usually loaded on the last day of the previous month. This time was different – one $35 showed up on 11/30, and the other one showed up on 12/3. I was thinking that it finally stopped coming, but apparently not yet.

Same here, for this month, I got my first load on Dec 1 and another 2 on Dec 4. I currently have 2 active Platinum’s and 1 previously cancelled.
I also thought something was wrong because of the 2 day delay, but like you said, it is still going!!

Mine was clawed back on 12/9 – I knew this was coming but did not do anything. I drive to work everyday and the choices I have for ubereats are so limited that I do not even want to order any.

DoC, this has been going on for the past 2 years, that I know of. Where I cancel my Platinum and I leave the card # on the Uber account and EACH MONTH after cancellation (seem like forever), I am still getting that credit. Obviously, this is a bug.

Since 2 years ago, I tried to remove my cancelled Platinum # from my Uber account, both from the Desktop and App, but neither one would work. So I had no choice to leave it there. The results is if you leave your cancelled Platinum # on the app, it continues to give you the credit, each month. It remains this way for many months and not surprised if for a year.

I’ve held many of the Platinum’s: Vanilla, Mercedes Benze, Morgan Stanley, Business, Ameritrade (60K), Vanilla again via recent referral and down to Schwab (I don’t have yet).

I still have my Amex plat and I can’t even use the credit because ubereats is crap.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think this is one of those bugs that shouldn’t have a front page post since it’s been going on so long and is simply a bug. There is nothing we can do to actively exploit it, so why draw more attention to it?

parrothead
parrothead

The point was to inform people that weren’t getting the credits any longer that they now have a credit so that it doesn’t go unused.

Youngestofallthebuck
Youngestofallthebuck

I understand that perspective since some users might not ever open the Uber app after having canceled their cards. That being said, since this has been going on a long time, why draw attention to it now?

William Charles

Because it was publicly posted elsewhere.

Yeah. Things like this shouldn’t be on any blog and specially not DoC since I consider this site to be one of the good ones for reward info. You can bet Amex RAT team is jump on it soon and put the hammer down on some people who used it knowingly or unknowingly

this is great because i have an amex plat schwab that is open and hasnt received uber credits for the last 9 months, and nobody at uber or amex can figure out what to do about it
