American Express Premier Rewards Gold 50,000 Point Offer

The Offer

Our Verdict

The same offer was available back in January, but stopped working. It’s now working again, although you may need to open a new window in incognito multiple times for the offer to show up. I’m still holding out for a 75,000 point offer on this card (which has been offered in the past) as you can only get this bonus once per lifetime, that being said 50,000 points is double the standard bonus so it might make sense to pull the trigger on this bonus instead.

Stellar! Thanks for posting. I tend more toward the “bird in hand” style of thinking. Worth waiting for 50k offers since they come up pretty frequently, but if you have a 50k offer on the table and are in a position to take advantage of it, a 75k offer is somewhat speculative to wait around for.

(Which is to say, impulsively applied and was approved–thanks!)

“OFFER TERMS

If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer. This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.”

So only NEW Amex customers are eligible? That rules out just about everyone in the travel hacking space.

First bullet point in the Fine Print:

“If you’re identified as a current or former American Express card member, this offer may not be available to you. In the past this has not been enforced at all.”

@ William — Have you had any test experiences applying for a personal Amex like this one (and receiving the bonus), since May 2014, for a card you’ve had previously? I read on another blog yesterday that Amex is only selectively enforcing the once-per-lifetime rule, and that this person has received, since the rule change, signup bonuses on multiple personal cards which he had previously held. Would love to hear another data point if it’s out there since I’m hesitant to waste an inquiry, as I’m sure we all are.

Hi Will,

In another post you asked if there was anything you could add to the blog to make it even more useful. I think I speak for all of us with less than perfect credit (high 600s FICO, trying to get a 7 year old bankruptcy removed) that including some tidbits about approval odds would be AMAZING.

Is a charge card like this easier to get than a credit card, like I read somewhere? Approximate minimum requirements? Should you even bother with a sub-700 score? Things like that. I typically try to do this research myself for every card I’m considering, but I’m no expert navigating the waters of credit just yet.

Hi Will,

Can you confirm that since this is a charge card, it would not be possible to downgrade to another American Express card that does not have an annual fee? Or is there a way around this?

Thanks!

Will,

I believe this card also gets 2x points at grocery stores. I’m considering applying for the Everyday Preferred and the Primier Rewards Gold since I can theoretically do it which one inquiry. Thoughts?

I got a 50K MR point offer in mail. In addition, I also see the 100K Platinum (AF $450) offer online. Does it make sense to go for the Platinum? I might travel to India later this year so airlines miles will help. If I end up not going, I can easily sell my 100K points for $1000+ and I also get a $ 200 airline fee credit for two calender years (2015 and 16) until the next annual fee is due again. Any thoughts?

Got it to show up. 5th try. Anyone confirm that Amex cardholders get the bonus? Never had the PRG but have had Amex before.

Should add: Like many others on Flyertalk, I had success on Macbook + Safari. Interestingly, got it on the first time there vs. private/incognito on a PC or my mobile phone. Perhaps coincidental. But a few of us had a similar experience.

Spouse got a pre-screened offer for Blue Cash Everyday ($250 after spending $1000 in 90 days). After going through my saved feedly posts I saw this one – I realized that we might go for 2nd card from AmEx on the same day.

Luckily she was instantly approved for the 2nd card as well (Gold 50k pts). There were a couple of hours between the requests.

Trying this today with a bunch of different browsers and devices but no luck, only getting 25k points after $2k spending. Anyone else have a different experience? I’m thinking they updated the offer with the changeover in card benefits.

I also wasn’t able to get this to work. Is it no longer available?

June 23rd: I managed to get the 50k/2k offer. Applied and accepted.

I received an offer for the PRG in the mail for 50k/$2k without the lifetime language. But this $1k incognito deal sounds better. Any thoughts? I’ve never had an American Express card and I’d like not to mess up on my first one.

Chuck

If you’ve never had the card before, then it doesn’t matter if there’s lifetime language.

If you can get the offer to show for 50k/$1k take that one. Otherwise, go with the 50k/2k offer.
