American Express SPG Luxury Card To Launch On August 23rd – 3 Day Window To Get Card

VFTW is reporting that the American Express SPG Luxury card will launch on August 23rd. This huge news because American Express & Chase are adding restrictive language to the SPG/Marriott cards on August 26th. For the Luxury card you’re ineligible if any of the following are true:

  • Currently have or have had any of the following cards in the last 30 days: Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card from JP Morgan
  • Have acquired any of the following Chase cards in the last 90 days:
    • Marriott Rewards Premier Plus
    • Marriott Rewards Premier
    • Marriott Rewards Premier Business
  • Have received a welcome or upgrade offer on any of the following Chase cards in the last 24 months
    • Marriott Rewards Premier Plus
    • Marriott Rewards Premier
    • Marriott Rewards Premier Business

This means people will have a three day window in between when the luxury card launches and when the new rules go into place. This sounds too good to be true, I have no idea why American Express would be doing this but I will just have my fingers and toes crossed that this will actually be possible.

Keep in mind American Express does have application rules: You’re limited to one approved credit card every 5 day rolling period and two approved credit cards every 90 rolling period. American Express also limits you to 4/5 credit cards. The luxury card is a credit card, so you’ll want to make sure you’ll be eligible for the card when it launches on the 23rd. The sign up bonus on this card is rumored to be 125,000 points.

Originally applied on 8/25 to beat the clock (held Marriott biz last year), but was approved on 8/29 after closing another Amex credit card. Should I still expect to get the bonus though it was approved after the 3-day window?

Sorry, been out of the loop on Marriott and SPG points for a while since I’ve focused on other loyalty brands. Will this new SPG Luxury bonus of 125,000 points be SPG points that can be converted to Marriott at 1:3 meaning 375,000 Marriott points? Of course, the devaluation over the years makes it much harder to use that few Marriott points at the top category hotels, so it just looks like a lot of points (it used to be better back in the day). Or, are these SPG/Marriott points of 125,000 (rumored bonus) just 125,000 points even at Marriott branded hotels? I know about the merger, but still not sure on SPG points vs Marriott points values now.

Absolutely not, they are 125,000 Marriott points. Keep dreaming!

I just read that some people in the last few days have reported getting 1:2 SPG to Marriott on their SPG cc spend. But, maybe that is not for any new card, like this one, yet to be released? My last SPG/Marriott points stay was in 2017 and since then I’ve been using other brands anyhow so haven’t really cared. I’m also not worried about the new rules on August 26, but if this Amex “SPG Luxury” card will count any Marriott or SPG bonus as lifetime then I’ll continue to ignore Amex cards.

The post says: “Have received a welcome or upgrade offer on any of the following Chase cards….”. I received an upgrade offer but didn’t take advantage of it. Does that mean I am ineligible?

What is the optimal strategy for getting the SPG Luxury card and the SPG Small Business card? I currently hold a SPG personal card and a Ritz Carlton card. My goal is to get both cards just for the initial offer and hold for one year. Is there a way to get both bonuses? Thank you

A) The Ineligibility you have mentioned above will make anyone ineligible on Aug 23rd if they meet on ANY of those you have mentioned?????????

Or these factors will go into effect on Aug 26th, so anyone can apply for the Luxury card between Aug 23/24/25 And get this card? PLEASE CLEAR THE CONFUSION……..

B) The SPG Business 100k bonus via referral bonus going on currently……if one applies for that right now, can he also apply for the SPG Luxury on Aug 23rd?

The “new” restrictions about cross-pollination between what you’ve had with Chase vs. what you’ve had with AMEX goes into effect 26 Aug… the theory is that if the Lux launches on the 23rd, it won’t have this new Chase/AMEX restrictive language, thus you’ll be eligible for the Lux 23-25 Aug even though you have other Marriott-branded Chase cards. As of right now, anyone can get the SPG Biz so long as you’re not breaking normal AMEX restrictive rules like holding no more than 4 or 5 of their CREDIT cards, not approved for more than 2 CREDIT cards in last 90 days, etc. But come Aug 26th, the new rules listed in the post go into effect, and thus it becomes VERY hard to get separate Marriott-branded cards from both Chase and AMEX depending on what you already have.

Sorry, I feel a little lost in the details.
1. What is this 3 day window on Aug 23rd?
Does it mean you can apply for SPG Luxury even if you have applied for Marriott personal cc in the past 2 yrs? Please help

2. If I apply for this SPG luxury card on Aug 23rd, will it exclude me from Marriott applications starting Aug 26th?

1) you have 3 days (23-25 Aug) to get the Lux card if you’d normally become ineligible on 26 Aug under these new Chase/AMEX restrictions listed in the post, i.e. it’s thought that when the Lux launches on 23 Aug, it’s only restrictive language will be the typical AMEX stuff like “lifetime bonus” (which nobody will have issue with since this is a new card), but also the anti-churning rules AMEX has like 2/90 and 4-5 credit cards limits.
2) Yes, if you get the Lux (or have other AMEX SPG cards), come Aug 26th, Chase should update their Marriott cards with restrictive language about having had AMEX cards.

Just to be clear, you said, “For the Luxury card you’re ineligible if any of the following are true…” I think you meant will be ineligible on August 26th, right? If I applied for the Chase Marriott now would I still be able to get this card on the 24th?

Yes, 23-25 Aug Lux apps should only have basic AMEX restriction language like they do on all their other cards normally (lifetime, etc.)

Would amex combine the pull for a personal credit card twinned to a BRG?
