Our Verdict

I find SPG points to be quite valuable, this 30,000 point sign up bonus comes around only once a year usually so if you’re interested in picking up some SPG points then now is the time to do so. I think the best use of points is for SPG stays, but you can also transfer to airline partners. If you transfer 20,000 points you receive a transfer bonus of 5,000 additional miles. American Airlines is also currently offering an additional 5,000 mile bonus (20,000 SPG points = 30,000 AA).

I find airline miles too easy to earn and SPG points more difficult, so I’d recommend keeping the SPG points but this will depend on your personal preference. Keep in mind you can only get the sign up bonus on American Express personal cards once and on the business card you can’t have or had the product in the past twelve months.

It’s interesting that the Business card now has a minimum spending requirement of $5,000 and the personal card has a spending requirement of only $3,000. This makes sense as the Business card now has additional benefits and the reason given was that Business cardholders spend more on their card on average compared to Personal cardholders.

This deal is supposed to run until September 14th, 2015.

Is there any spending requirement for the opening bonus? No? Annual fee not waived for the first year though?

One thing I don’t understand in my life is why people say 30,000 SPG points are a lot or valuable? I mean its only 30k points. Amex platinum often offers 100k and PRG often offers 75k. 30k is the lowest offered by any Chase, Amex or Citi card out there, except Freedom that isn’t even comparable bcoz of no annual fee.

Someone once offered me three tiny dimes for my fourteen pennies, but I told ’em nope I’m no sucker! I had 11 more coins than they did!

Best SPG redemptions are Category 1/2 hotels, which require up to 4K points. I just spent 15 nights in many of these cat 1/2 hotels and it was alright 😉

For someone like me, SPG points are super valuable. For others not so much. For those that don’t know how to spend them, they’re probably useless.

I have a suggestion for your blog: IMO it’s much better that when we click on any link on blog posts, it automatically opens in tab.

I meant new tab

many of us have asked for this repeatedly because it would make browsing links so much easier… but DoC doesn’t seem to agree… not sure why. 🙁

Because it puts the *user* in control of his/her browser environment. Lots of people have popup blockers; one might want to open a link in incognioto mode, etc..

Just hold ctrl while you click the link and it will open in a new tab.

Right click “Open in a new tab”?

how difficult is it to take control of your own browser options instead of asking someone to do it for you?

Until today, the SPG business card offered 25,000 points for $3,000 in spend. Two questions:
1. Are the extra 5,000 points worth the extra $2,000 in spend?
2. After Sept. 14, will the SPG business card go back to a spending requirement of only $3,000 again?
Thanks!

Is it possible to apply (and be approved) for both versions (personal + business) of this card on the same day for 60k points? Would the inquiries be merged?

I’ve had the personal for a while. Got baited by the “SPG points are so valuable because of ability to transfer and 5k bonus” line. Even though I would have had to spend another $20k on it to use this benefit ($5k for 25k points, plus 5k from spend gave me 30k points, bonus is in in blocks of 20k). Also, as a beginner, the 30+ transfer partners isn’t really a big benefit, since you have to be booking pretty advanced trips to need the more obscure airlines.

You stated their value is from the value of SPG nights, so I’m not saying you were selling this line, just warning people that if you derive value from flexibility, know you will only be getting about 38k points from this signup and spend.

Also, this post reminded me of the Boingo benefit and I went and signed up. Thanks!

I know Amex usually doesn’t match offers – but I just signed up for the business card a couple days ago (haven’t received or activated card) – any idea if I would be more successful in getting switched to this offer?

Any idea if my wife and I can both get separate business cards using the same business name and tax ID on the same day?

Any idea if we can get the 30k offer, plus have someone earn 5k as a referral bonus?

I already have 4 AMEX credit cards: (1) Blue, (2) Blue Cash, (3) Hilton, and (4) SimplyCash. If I apply, will it automatically get declined and/or will I have a chance to call in and cancel one of the other cards in order to get this one approved?

Alfred
Alfred

Based on my experience, because of 4 personal cards, decline.
Earlier I applied for a personal card(4 personal and 1 charge already active) and was declined , though CS won’t give a reason. Closed a personal account and they approved for the applied personal account.

Thanks for this post. I have 4 personal Amex cards. Will they approve my application for SPG personal card? If not what’s the easiest way to apply and get the 30k bonus?

The terms say Additional Card Members on your account are not eligible for this offer. So any Authorized users added to existing SPG cards are not eligible for this welcome bonus offer?

Dave
Dave

I believe they’re just saying that adding an AU to your new application won’t net an additional bonus – you only get one bonus regardless of adding AUs or not.

I thought so too, Thanks!
