Amex Offer: $25 Off $125 at J Crew, Split-Tender Online

The Offer

• Spend $125 at J Crew or jcrew.com with your registered Amex card and receive a $25 statement credit.

This offer is currently only available via the Amex login. As far as I can tell, it’s not targeted and is available in all logins, but it’s possible that this isn’t  correct.

This offer is currently not available via Twitter but in the past a similar offer has been and I’m hopeful that this will eventually be sync-able as well.

Moneymaker + Free Points

The terms do not exclude gift card purchases. I already placed an order for a gift card and received the “congrats” email as expected. In the past, it was reported that e-gift card purchases triggered the Amex credit as well.

If you’ll resell the gift cards, you should be able to break even or slightly better. You’ll end up with the free credit card points.

This probably wouldn’t be worth the effort for most people, but last time this offer was around I had lots of success getting portal cashback by using the ShopDiscover portal, see Amex Offer: Moneymaker with $25 Off $125 at J Crew, Split-Tender Online. At that time, they were offering a nice 10% cashback, but now it’s down to 5%. Note that other portals have not been working when purchasing gift cards from jcrew.com, only the Discover portal has been working.

We still don’t know whether e-gift cards will trigger Discover cashback or not, but hopefully physical gift cards will continue to trigger the cashback.

We also noted there that the J Crew website is unique in that it allow us to split the payment of an order between  two credit cards (but no more than two). This makes it much easier when using the Amex Offers on jcrew.com, since you can order a $250 gift card and split the payment between two cards at $125 each and receive two $25 credits.

Our Verdict

This offer is only half as good as it was last time around when ShopDiscover was offering 10% back at J Crew. I’m not sure if I would have done it at the 5%, but since I was successful last time around with the portal payout I decided to do it this time as well, at the smaller margin.

I went through the DiscoverDeals portal and split the cost of a $250 physical J Crew gift card between two  registered Amex cards. Confirmation came from Amex immediately, thanking me for using the offer (x2). I’ll update this post if/when the Discover cashback email comes.

[Update 4/20/15: I just received the cashback email that I’ll be receiving $12.50 in Discover Cashback. Now I have to order on the rest of my cards.]
