Amex Offers: $25 off $25 on Hulu Subscription [$10 Moneymaker with Plenti] + Free Roku

This deal is now better, more details here.

The Offer

Amex released a new offer for Hulu, showing in the online login.

  • Spend $25 or more with a registered Amex card and get $25 back

Screen Shot 2016-08-04 at 3.32.37 PM

This offer is valid both for new and returning subscribers.

The Fine Print

  • Card must be enrolled by 10/4/16
  • The $25 spend must be met by 2/4/17
  • The $25 spend is cumulative, apparently, since there’s no way to spend $25 on Hulu that isn’t cumulative
  • Valid online only
  • Spend at hulu.com/start/amex

Our Verdict

The terms indicate that you should signup at hulu.com/start/amex, but I’m pretty sure that so long as the charge goes on the Amex it will be fine (same as all future charged which are running through the regular Hulu payment system).

To maximize this offer, we’ll have to arrange the Hulu subscription to get our charges as close as possible to $25 so that the $25 Amex credit will make it free. This is quite difficult.

Best I can see is to do two months on the $7.99 plan, then one month on the $11.99 plan. You’ll end up paying $2.97 for the three months. Then switch out your payment option to another registered Amex card and do the same pattern. All-in-all it will be six months of Hulu for $.99 each month, plus a bit of a hassle.

If anyone has any better ideas to maximize this offer, please let us know.

Last time around, this offer was much better since it was possible to buy Hulu gift cards. They don’t sell those anymore online at the moment, so that won’t work this time.

[If you are a new Hulu subscriber, my appreciation if you use my Hulu referral link to signup.]

Plenti –  Moneymaker

Plenti is currently offering a 1000 points bonus for signing up with Hulu after activating the offer in your Plenti account. Check your Plenti account to see if you have this offer.

If you are signing up for this Plenti promo, I’d recommend using the link shown in your Plenti account (not the Amex link or a referral link) so that the system will automatically prompt you to enter your Plenti number when signing up. If you add the Plenti number afterward, I’m not sure if you’ll get the $10 credit for signing up. As noted above, the Amex Offer should work even if you don’t use the special Amex link.

After your first payment made to Hulu, you’ll get 1000 Plenti points. It’s not actually a $10 moneymaker since there is a minimum $2.97 cost, see above, but you get the idea.

As an aside, Plenti offers small amounts of points for watching shows on Hulu as well, as outlined in this post. Poke around in your Plenti account and you might find some other 200 points offers as well.

I just got the $25 credit from only 2 months of hulu without commercials! Strange! Wondering if that initial $1 auth had anything to do with it??? I also am trying to figure out how maximize plenti points since I have more offers than I can use by expiration. Thinking about doing some hulu referrals and doing some of the show watching things for extra plenti points.
Copied from my reddit post:

I also just signed up for Plenti. Since I have 9 amex cards (including AUs), I was able to score 9 offers for for the spend $25 on hulu by 2/4/17, get $25 free. I already used $23.98 from one offer on my friends account (commercial free 11.99/mo). And since the billing date is the 7th, there is just no way to use all of these in time. Its easy to earn 200 points just by watching 10 shows (3 times with 3 different show categories).
Until registering for Plenti for today, my original plan was to just have nearly free hulu until 2/7/17, but I would only be using roughly 3 offers. I am going to have to consider switching from no commercials to commercials since they pro rate to hit the 25 and my state does not charge tax.

I am trying to figure out the best deal with this since each new sub generates 1k plenti points, fairly easy 600 points from viewing, 200 from adding device, 525 for a referral with no commercials, 1650 points for 6 months of any paid hulu months…..

I signed up for hulu+ showtime. The first month was only $7.99 since Showtime has a one month free trial. The charge for the second month hit today for $16.98. ($7.99+$8.99) This morning I received the email from Amex that I used my offer. (even though the total appears to be $24.97) Weird?

and just like that I think I understand why this happens.

Hulu places a $1 hold which never posts but Amex recognizes it. I still need to find a way to spend $0.03 with them to get the offer

I will add commercial free to them and cancel in 2-3 days

Does anyone know how long it usually takes for plenti points to post to your account? I signed up for hulu through plenti, and the 1000 point promo T&C’s state that the points kick in once your free trial ends and you start paying monthly. My Amex was charged today for my first paid month of hulu, but I”m curious when the points might show up.

It has been my experience that Plenti points regarding Hulu are notoriously late to post. This includes “watch” points — 3-7 days to post after completing watch.

Double whatever time-frame you normally work with.

Had to file a claim with plenti CS since they never showed. I’m also a little worried that Amex won’t come through either as usually when there’s a minimum spend promo that isn’t possible to meet with just one purchase (e.g. this hulu), Amex sends you a reminder email on your first purchase stating that the terms of the offer require X $ amount for the offer to be completed. We will see! Otherwise, I’m out $25 for no reason.

Have to add a little insult to injury here. The last several rounds of 600 point “watch comedy, drama, kids” shows never posted. When I contacted Plenti I was told the offer is only for new customers. Of course the terms make no mention of this. Was considering making a stink of the situation but I’ll just open a new account and see if the offer works again.

I love how they close the $25 amount, knowing full well that you won’t be able to spend exactly that unless you’re being taxed (most aren’t).

So if you do $7.99 x 3 months = $23.97 or $11.99 x 2 months = $23.98, you still will have to go for the third month to go over the $25 spend threshold.

Or, do as the original post says and go with 2 months @ 7.99 and 1 month @ 11.99, for a grand total of $28. As noted by other commenters, you can also time it so they prorate and get exactly $25.

My wife has our Hulu subscription in her name. None of her Amex’s were targeted and none of her Amex AUs (her name, my accounts) were targeted. All of my Amex’s were targeted and my Amex AUs (my name, her accounts) were targeted. Seems that Amex cross-referenced Hulu’s list of subscribers before sending out this offer.

Also, we plan on getting Hulu+Showtime for 6 months for $27 all in (4.50/month); saves us ~45% off of normal cost of Hulu plus we get free Showtime.

7.99 (Hulu w/ adds) + 8.99 (Showtime) = $17 x 2 months = $34 – $25 credit = $9/2 months. x3 Amex cards = 6 months. 6 months should be plenty of time to binge watch some Showtime shows.

“Limit 1 statement credit(s) per American Express® online account.”

So if all my cards are in one account, even though multiple cards are targeted with this offer, I can only get one $25?

I’m willing to bet you can do this with multiple cards if each one has a amex login. Most of the $off offers have these same stipulations.
