I’m still seeing the same very cheap fares on most trains, now for their entire schedule (through next May) even though the sale is officially over.

I took the Acela between Washington and New York once.
LOL – I was embarrassed. I think we hit 35MPH at one point.

You’re joking but reality is the Acela is barely any faster than the regular train. It is kind of dumb.

These are excellent fares because they’re 35% off the already reduced Covid fares, at least in the Northeast Corridor where I travel. Unfortunately they don’t reduce the point redemption prices because the best cash prices are Saver fares, whereas the points redemptions are based on Value fares. Even though I’m swimming in points, I just cancelled a 5160 point Acela booking and replaced it with a $65 ticket. Phone rep waived the 10% cancellation penalty because I was rebooking with cash.

It’s been a while since I’ve been on Amtrak but was just booking a one way from WAS to MET today that I was thinking looked cheap from what I remembered. Used to do that route all the time before moving to California. It was like $35 Saver, $55 Value, and I want to say the Saver was up to like $50-$60 before the pandemic and only if you booked at least a couple of months in advance? I went with the $55 Value option this time though since this is piggybacking off a work trip so I thought it made more sense to pay for the flexibility on changing/canceling in this case.

Jason Yeah, these are basically half price compared to pre-pandemic. Fares for that route are as low as $27 coach, or $65 Acela, which both would have been unheard of prices a couple years ago.

If the pandemic wasn’t going on I would totally book a trip for end of August. Problem is I don’t know what things will look like at the time, so it’s difficult to commit to non-refundable options.

Acela has always been a terrible deal on points in comparison to other Amtrak trains.

Joe Yeah, it’s a double whammy because the Acela tickets are overpriced compared to regular trains (at least double the cost even though they’re only 15-20% faster for the route I take) and Amtrak charges more points per dollar for them. For those reasons, I’ve actually never set foot on an Acela train despite traveling on Amtrak several times a year for several years.

In my case, I had more points than I knew what to do with (transfers from JetBlue via Points.com) and they’ve cut the train schedules so much due to Covid that the Acela train was really the only one that worked with my schedule. Glad I was able to get such a good cash rate and preserve my points for hopefully normal times ahead.

This does appear to be an actual discount to general fares.

Example date: September 10th. The mixed service from STL to CHI via the City of New Orleans is often $80 (sale: $66) and the KCY to STL Missouri River Runner is offering $23 Value fares (normally around $36). CHI to STL at $20 for a Value fare is also better than average.

Correction: The sale fares mentioned in my earlier comment are Saver, not Value, fares.
