The Fine Print
- Transactions must be completed between 9:00 a.m. ET June 10, 2020 and 11:59 p.m. ET June 17, 2020 to be eligible for bonus points.
- Points will be posted to your Amtrak Guest Rewards account within 72 hours after your transaction is complete.
- Points may be purchased in increments of 500 points and members may buy or receive up to a total of 30,000 points in a calendar year (Select Executive members have no annual point purchase limit).
- Points purchased under 1,000 are not eligible for bonus.
- Buying points for yourself or as a gift for someone else does not count toward Select, Select PlusSM or Select Executive status.
- Transactions are final and non-refundable.
- In order to buy points, you must have your Amtrak Guest Rewards member number (and the recipient’s Amtrak Guest Rewards member number if buying points as a gift), and a valid credit card issued in your name with a billing address in the U.S., Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands.
- All other terms and conditions of the Amtrak Guest Rewards program apply. Prices are in U.S. dollars. GST/HST will be charged to Canadian residents.
Our Verdict
If you purchase 30,000 points for $1,310 you’d get an extra 15,000 points (45,000 total points). Still almost 3¢ per point. Not sure if any portals offer any bonuses for Amtrak point purchases through points.com, I don’t see it specifically mentioned. Usually points are worth 2.9¢ each at the very upper end, so not sure why you’d want to buy points even under this promotion.
i miss that promo they had a couple years ago in the Fall, where it was 3X points on all purchases with the amrak boa card. Earned a few years of free amtrak travel from that.
I value Amtrak points at over 3c each because I redeem at 2.9c for sleeper accommodation, and then get the 5% redeemed point rebate with holding the Amtrak Guest Rewards World Mastercard.
Still not a buy for me though.
