  • Ancestry.com is offering 10,000 free 6-month subscriptions for K-12 educators across America

Our Verdict

You can’t build family trees for students, not sure if you can build one for yourself or not. Heard very mixed things about Ancestry, feel free to share your experiences in the comments.

My local public library has a membership! Just log onto your library’s website, look for “online resources,” and click through to Ancestry through there. Public libraries FTW!

Or, if you are an AARP member, it’s 30% off, but you can only use that discount once. So, http://www.ancestry.com/ip/aarp – free 14 days, then 30% off. If you are already a member and have never used the discount, give them a call.

I would advise everyone to be careful of services like these. Not sure what the community guidelines are, so I won’t post the direct link to the webpage. But if you google “60 Minutes ancestry 23 and me”, you should see the 60 minutes piece on these kind of services.
Nothing in life is free, especially in this internet era. You know what they say? If the service is free, then you are the product.
Case in point, YouTube is “free“, but you ARE paying for the service by watching ads and telling YouTube what things you like and are likely to be spending money on.

DEAD – The code I received said “Expires Sept 30, 2020.” I tried to apply it anyway but it didn’t work.

Trying to do this … I’m a teacher… went through the verification process and got a code … but when I try to use the code, it doesn’t work and it looks like its going to charge me $149.

I used to have an account (free) but did make make sure start a new account using the school email address … no idea how to push the code through so it’s actually free for 6 months

I remember when it was free all the time 15 years ago when they claimed ownership over the family records people shared with one another on the “message forums.”

It works for faculty and staff of degree-granting universities as well. It’s not mentioned on the linked page, but it’s there once Get started button is clicked.
