Bank of America Amtrak Credit Card 40,000 Points + $100

Looks like it’s still available

Update: You can get an additional $100 statement credit with a dummy booking

The Offer

Direct link to offer (if link doesn’t work do a dummy booking and the offer should show. I found the link worked once I started a dummy booking)

  • You can now receive a sign up bonus of 40,000 points & $100 after $2,500 in spend within 90 days of account opening on the Bank of America Amtrak Credit card.

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $79 is not waived
  • Complimentary Companion Coupon, One-Class Upgrade and a single-day ClubAcela® pass for access to ClubAcela, Amtrak Metropolitan LoungeSM or First class
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 3 points per $1 spent with Amtrak
    • 2 points per $1 spent on all other qualifying travel purchases
    • 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • 5% Amtrak Guest Rewards point rebate when you book your Amtrak redemption
  • Looks to be valid until September 27th, 2019

Our Verdict

Standard bonus is 20,000 points but we’ve seen 30,000 points and 20,000 + $100 before as well. So this bonus is by far the best we’ve seen. In terms of the value of Amtrak points they are as follows:

  • Non-Acela tickets points are worth 2.9¢ each
  • Acela tickets points are worth 2.56¢ cent

More information about Amtrak and point valuations can be found here.  This can be a valuable bonus for those that take advantage of/enjoy train travel. I will be adding this to our list of the best credit card bonuses. If you have any questions about Bank of America credit cards I’d recommend reading this post first.

What’s a dummy booking? Is it booking a refundable ticket and cancel it well in advance?

Raj
Raj

Just starting the booking and then an offer should come up before you actually need to pay.

Search any route, put a ticket in your cart, go to checkout, fill out some bogus personal info, phone number, and email, then the page after that will be the payment page which will have a banner ad for the credit card with the improved offer.

Thank you Raj and Tim

Cue the deval? If not that’s a terrific deal

The direct link worked for me. I had been planning an Amtrak trip, so thanks for the heads up!

I was denied for the first time ever applying for a credit card. 🙁 Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise because I didn’t see the $100 credit with the dummy booking until RIGHT after I hit submit on the application. Just happened to see it on Amtrak’s site before checking DoC. Can’t figure out why I might’ve been denied. I opened a BoA card in February of this year, but it’s the only BoA product I have. Does requesting a new card when yours is lost or stolen count against you in some way? I had to do that recently.

No. BoA has just gotten stingier over the last year.

Read through this recent post. The 3/12 or 7/12 rule may apply to you.

Since you lack any BOA deposit accounts, it sounds like you’d be limited by the 3/12 rule.

Not always 2.9c as you lose other discounts such as the 50% child discount.

Recently when I used Amtrak points they were effectively worth only 1.8c each because if I had paid cash I would have booked at the Saver rate (which they don’t let you do with points), but even at that redemption value this is an insanely lucrative sign up bonus. I like that Amtrak points require zero hoops to jump through or research to redeem.

Man I wish so hard I was over 5/24 so I would actually go for this. I can’t waste a slot on this rn, hope offer comes back, and not with a deval.

hi all, what’s the transfer options for Amtrak points currently? I vaguely recall you need to have certain statuses before you can transfer. Is that still true? Appreciate any inputs.

Every August like clockwork, I love it! Just last week downgraded my 30k offer from Aug 2018 to the free version, and did the same a year earlier. Now approved for the 40k+$100. Thanks Doc!

Which card is the “free version” of this card that you can downgrade to after a year?

I just did a dummy booking, looks like the points are worth 2.3 cpp on the Northeast Regional when you book reserved coach. Not 2.9cpp unless you book business class.

Avi
Avi

On the Northeast Regional route I take, it’s still 2.9cpp for coach class. Be sure you’re comparing to the “Value” level fare because you can’t use points for the cheaper “Saver” level fare. For this reason, the points are more valuable for last minute travel where Saver level fares are no longer available.

The Jackal
The Jackal

Oh, you’re right. It does come out to 2.9 cpp when you check the “value” level.

This Amtrak card could work perfectly into our next family vacation to SE Asia. It comes out to 4200 to 6400 Amtrak points for 4 people each way depending on which airport we take it to. It’d beat driving to and paying for parking at BOS or EWR.

I just did a booking yesterday. On off-peak weekday fares (i.e. between rush hours), it was around 2.9 cpp for Northeast Regional coach, about 2.6 cpp for Acela First Class, and 2 cpp for Acela Business Class (the equivalent of coach on Acela).

No 24 mo language… can you get 2 in one day?

Can you buy an Amtrak gift card to get the $100 statement credit?

You just have to meet MSR.. no need to buy gc

Denied for the credit card. Appears my days of getting a Bank of America Credit Card are over.

Right on. I haven’t traveled by train in a looong time, so it should be fun to try something different for a change.

Can you get approved with a lot of inquires?

Tim

Too many inquries seems to be a common theme in their denials, so it certainly doesn’t help.

Personally I’m going to try later this week with my Ex locked and see if I can get them to pull elsewhere, that seems like it has worked for some in the past.
