Direct link to offer (if link doesn’t work do a dummy booking and the offer should show. I found the link worked once I started a dummy booking)

  • You can now receive a sign up bonus of 40,000 points & $100 after $2,500 in spend within 90 days of account opening on the Bank of America Amtrak Credit card.

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $79 is not waived
  • Complimentary Companion Coupon, One-Class Upgrade and a single-day ClubAcela® pass for access to ClubAcela, Amtrak Metropolitan LoungeSM or First class
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 3 points per $1 spent with Amtrak
    • 2 points per $1 spent on all other qualifying travel purchases
    • 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • 5% Amtrak Guest Rewards point rebate when you book your Amtrak redemption
  • Looks to be valid until September 27th, 2019

Our Verdict

Standard bonus is 20,000 points but we’ve seen 30,000 points and 20,000 + $100 before as well. So this bonus is by far the best we’ve seen. In terms of the value of Amtrak points they are as follows:

  • Non-Acela tickets points are worth 2.9¢ each
  • Acela tickets points are worth 2.56¢ cent

More information about Amtrak and point valuations can be found here.  This can be a valuable bonus for those that take advantage of/enjoy train travel. I will be adding this to our list of the best credit card bonuses. If you have any questions about Bank of America credit cards I’d recommend reading this post first.

Any way to change the statement closing date so that the points post sooner?

Thanks but read that last night and called today. The rep told me that she could change the due date but not statement close date (doesn’t make sense to me). Thought I’d ask here for more info.

I just spent a little over $2500 for this card but since they are giving the $100 statement credit does that mean I need to spend $2600?

I would guess no, but probably best to spend $2600 just to be safe.

$2,580 is the minimum since the annual fee doesn’t count towards the spend requirement.

BOA is claiming the 40K + $100 statement credit never existed.I got the 40K but am having to fight for the $100. Unbelievable.

Historically, they raise the bonus once a year, in the summer.

P2 was approved for this card, got the 40k miles and $100 statement credit and was charged the annual fee. just now checked and saw the annual fee was credited back in full (says annual fee adjustment). so no net annual fee for first year and i received $100 statement credit….interesting. P2 is top tier boa status due to investment accounts, but i doubt that matters

Any opinions on if the Amtrak points or the transfer for 120k choice hotel points would be a better value? I will definitely use the companion and upgrade tickets for an upcoming NYC trip, not sure how much more train travel I will be taking in the next year. I have never had the choice card so I am not as familiar with their value/options. TIA for any advice.

The Amtrak points will stay active as long as you have activity every 24 months. Do you have the Amtrak status necessary to transfer to Choice? 40k Amtrak points are worth more than 120k Choice points unless you really never will use the Amtrak points.

Oh I was not aware I needed status to transfer them, that makes the decision much easier, thanks.

You have to have Amtrak to be able to do the transfer. I can’t remember the exact qualification details, but definitely spending a lot on the card or for actual train travel. If you used Choice strategically overseas, it would probably be better value.

Thanks, P2 was at 3/24 so I was really debating this through. Ended up applying for both a chase card and this. I was contemplating the possibility of waiting 2 month or so to apply for another chase card first before getting this but decided not to since this was supposed to expire 9/28. Not too bad now that it expired not long after but would’ve been really regretful if this was here for another two month.
