BBVA Compass Discontinuing NBA Checking Account – Spells The End For NBA Card

BBVA Compass has sent out NBA checking account holders a letter stating that on June 28th, 2017 their NBA checking account will be converted to a ClearConnect Checking account. In September account holders will receive a new debit card that does not include an NBA team logo. On June 30th, 2017 the BBVA Compass Online and Mobile Banking will no longer have the option to customize your profile with an NBA sports team.

The reason we care is that BBVA Compass offers the BBVA Compass NBA card that earns 5% during the finals and also all star weekend (there is a 5% period at the moment thanks to the finals). Recently they discontinued applications for this card and given this NBA checking news it’s clear that BBVA and NBA are parting ways.

I can’t imagine that BBVA will product change the NBA cardholders to another card that has 5% periods and whoever ends up with the NBA banking affiliation is unlikely to purchase the backbook from BBVA and offer the same promotion. Unfortunately it looks like the 5% everywhere days are gone after this finals period. All good things come to an end.

In more positive news let’s hope that whoever gets the NBA credit card issuing rights does something interesting with them. Given the state of the NFL cards and a lesser extend MLB cards I’m not that hopeful.

I called in today and had a surprising conversation with a BBVA rep. According to him, credit card holders WILL continue to receive 5x points for certain weeks. When I pressed him, he said that I will receive emails telling me when those weeks will be. (We will also still get” 2x points for gas stations and other…” He trailed off there.)

Obviously, this is a single conversation, and he could have misunderstood his reading material (though the comment about receiving emails about the weeks seemed unambiguous).

Could other Doctor of Credit readers who hold this credit card call BBVA Compass and ask? Because, if true, this is great!

Oops, I meant to put this comment on the credit card post. I’ll post again there, and feel free to delete this post. Thanks

Weird, just rec’d balance transfer offer in the mail. 0% for 6 months. Odd they’d be offering transfer promos just before they nuke the card.

I’ll probably cancel any new card issued to me, being that I don’t have a BBVA checking acct. There are others out there worth keeping that are still AMEX with better offers.

What’s the harm in keeping it? Pretty sure it doesn’t count against the Amex card limit since it’s co-branded.

Actually your right….I can always sync it with a social media acct and benefit from Amex offers.

How do you know it will be converted to another Amex card? That’s what I’m hoping happens.

in the past, banks have often kept the merchant the same, but changed the product it self…That happened with my Capital One Orbitz card…..converted into another VISA,but a different product.

About 1-2 months ago I completed a survey from BBVA asking about different category bonuses that I would be interested in. I suspected it was because they were going to get rid of the 5% during Finals/ASW. But, one of the options was a rotating 5% category a la Freedom/Discover (I voted for this option). TBH, I don’t remember what the other options were, but I didn’t think they were as good as the 5% rotating categories. Maybe a glimmer of hope that 5% won’t be completely taken away. If they offer 5% categories (along with ability to get Amex offers), this card is still a keeper for me since it has no AF.

The BBVA offers and the AMEX offers stack by the way. Even if this turns into a regular CB card, it would still be worth holding onto for that reason.

Isn’t this old news? There was a post a month ago about it on /r/churning. I also received this letter but didn’t send it to you because I thought it was well known they were parting ways.

What about Discover and the NHL?

What about them? Discover is a completely different company than BBVA Compass and the The NHL is a completely different company than The NBA.

I think my comment is being misconstrued. The statement was about poor earning sports credit cards. I was offering the NHL Discover as a counter-example.

I guess there aren’t too many NHL fans here. Personally I only knew about the NFL card from Barclay’s as I have it.

It’s the same as the Discover It card but it gets some discounts on NHL gear.
