The Offer

Direct link to offer (must have received the targeted email)

  • BBVA Compass is offering a $25 bonus when you log into the app at least once per month for the next 3 months

The Fine Print

  • In order to receive the $25 bonus, sign in to the mobile banking app with the same username at least once per month for three (3) consecutive months between September 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.
  • The $25 bonus will be deposited to the primary checking account associated with the username within 90 days of meeting the bonus requirements.
  • Account must be open and in good standing with a balance of more than $0.00 at the time of bonus payment in order to receive the bonus.
  • There is a maximum of one (1) bonus per household.
  • This offer may not be combined with any other bonus offer.
  • To qualify you cannot have received a cash bonus in the past 12 months.
  • We reserve the right to deduct the bonus amount if the account is closed within 12 months of receiving the bonus.
  • BBVA Compass may report the value of the bonus to the IRS as required by law.
  • Any client whose tax status would require BBVA Compass to impose tax withholding of any sort will not be eligible for this bonus.

Our Verdict

Keep in mind you need to keep the account open for a further 12 months if you receive the bonus and it says you’re not eligible if you received a cash bonus in the last 12 months. I’m not sure what cash bonuses qualify as they have frequent small bonuses like this. Do only sign up bonuses count or if you’ve done one of the other small bonuses does that also count?

I sent them SM and attached a screenshot of the email they sent me to prove I was targeted. Will post what their response is. I received the $25 to increase balance to $100 ONLY after I sending SM that I was missing the reward. At first, response was…what offer? what reward? I responded by saying I saved the offer and will send it to them if necessary.

It is best to save all communications from this and other banks so that if they ask for proof of being targeted, we can easily send it to them.

I’ve now doe 3 of these extra little bonus things and have never gotten a bonus. Probably because I got the bonus from opening an account. Doesn’t seem fair as they keep sending me this stuff although it does have the one bonus in 12 months restriction in the terms. Anyone else have experience to share? I think I should just close the account

Didn’t receive an email but a paper mail about the same app offer. Per what is printed, the verdict claim, “Keep in mind you need to keep the account open for a further 12 months if you receive the bonus”, is wrong as the term in the mail says, ‘”We reserve the right to deduct the bonus amount if the accoun tis closed within 12 months of OPENING”. So it refers to account opening not the date you receive new bonus. Don’t know if the email has the same wording.

I also have a question about how you define one month in the offer. Is it a calendar month or a statement period? My monthly statement ends on the 21st of each month. So the definition does matter to me. Thanks if you know.

I’m going to try it and see if they actually withdraw the $25 when I close it after the one year period from the opening bonus (December 2018). Not really much effort to do this $25 bonus and they are only “reserv[ing] the right to deduct the bonus amount.” Sounds like they aren’t going to actually take it back.

I just got a mailer with this same offer on it and it says “We reserve the right to deduct the bonus amount if the account is closed within 12 months of opening,” instead of the “within 12 months of receiving the bonus” language.

I was also targeted for a $50 cash bonus upon making three qualifying Bill Pay transactions by Dec. 4 with BBVA. Don’t know if these two bonuses negate each other or not, but I received them both as emails. Also received the $200 cash bonus back in February and an additional $50 bonus for direct depositing at least $1k into the account in July. For so little effort, I might as well try these bonuses too.

I got the bill pay offer too. Nice thing about that one is the language only says “We reserve the right to deduct the bonus amount if the account is ‭closed within 12 months of opening”. So it doesn’t add another 12 months like this mobile app offer does.
Not sure if I’ll qualify since I received a sign up bonus earlier this year, but it’s easy enough to try.

There is some irony in this promotion. Maybe I am the only one that will get this, but here is my story.

So, about a month ago, I been having an issue with BBVA locking me out of the online banking website. It will tell me on online banking that my account has been locked, with no way there to fix the issue. It will ask me to reset my security information, but not allow me to do it from the website. Gives me an UNKOWN error, even misspelled just like that. I keep having to go though the app to gain access to my account, get a text message security code, and even has me reset my security questions. It’s ridiculous, because the only difference between the website and the mobile app is the text message capability to confirm my identity.

I think the problem is related to Mint… and for some reason they won’t sync properly anymore. I tried dropping BBVA from Mint and re-adding, hoping that would fix it. If I had to take a bet… it started the day of the release of the new app. Eventually I am going to call BBVA tech support and have them reset everything or give me a new online account, because this is absolute crap.

So the moral of the story is… I am really enjoying using the new app every day or so to reset my security questions!

DP: I have been connected with Mint for about 6 months without any issues (logging into account or app), FWIW.

Thanks. Now that I think about it more, I will reset my password too. Maybe of I toggle every thing I can it will stop locking me out.

I think this is worth it if you don’t live in one of the targeted areas where they do bonuses. I wasn’t sure how often they did bonuses, so I had to go back and look through DoC posts, but they don’t do nationwide ones often and most times they’re targeted towards only a couple states.

They seem to do a lot of small bonuses like this for current account holders, though. Probably in lieu of offering interest on the accounts. I bet it works out in their favor most of the time.

I went for the “leave $100 in your account” bonus and I’m going to go for this one, too. That’s an extra $50 for no work, and I don’t think I’d be able to close the account and open a new one for a bonus later since they don’t seem to do nationwide bonuses too often. It’s worth it to me to keep it open for another 12 months and maybe get targeted for more of the mini-bonuses they do.

I won’t be keeping money in the account unless necessary for a bonus, though.
