Our Verdict

Obviously a great deal if you have a POS laptop that still powers on and isn’t cracked/water damaged. The $75 coupon might be useful for some as well, the Samsung Notebook 9 Pros are going for $1,299.99 and $1,099.99. Not sure if there is any POS laptop that you can buy for under $75 new, but surely can find some stuff on craigslist/eBay.

Oh No! I purchased a power supply on eBay for a POS laptop just for my wife to trade-in on this deal. I just had to click through the trade-in steps myself the deal has been pulled early.

Filled out the form three times now, different phone number third time, different email address each time, and still no email. I figured it would arrive by the time I get to the store, but no. Waiting two hours now…

Just returned from BB. I work with computers for a living so very comfortable talking tech and standing firm if necessary in front of BestBuy tech associates.

Trade-in for a laptop brand no longer in business. “Other brand”, “Other CPU” (intel core 2), Vista operating system, 2 GB of ram. At first their computer kept returning 0 value and refused to process but it was how they were entering data. Showed them printed paperwork from their website confirming $75, specifically told them to add the Samsung 9 notebook promo, and enter 2GB of ram (they entered < 2GB into the computer and trade-in issues resulted).

About 7 minutes of my time. They do ask for a phone number and your ID with address and they scan or record the serial number and model.

Can someone confirm that if I completely wipe my laptop (reformatted so there is no Windows or anything) that it will be accepted? Has anyone turned in a laptop in this condition?

DP: I took in my old Dell Studio, Windows Vista; works well. CSR said $22.50. I told her about the online $75 offer and she called someone to confer. Then she overrode and I got the $75. Ed (above), thanks for the Eraser info.

BEWARE. I suppose I should have checked first to see if they would take my laptop. I have a Toshiba core i3, Windows 10 (upgrade), 8 gB RAM, 500 gB hard drive. It’s probably about 5 years old and it works, but I’ve replaced it with a newer and much lighter laptop for use when traveling. I don’t use the Toshiba any longer, so I took the time to securely erase all of my files and then delete the registered software. I figured I’d at least get a $75 GC. But Best Buy refused to take the laptop even though it works perfectly well.

To the person above who asked what software to use to securely erase files: For an IBM PC, I downloaded a freeware program called Eraser. If you simply delete files, they are potentially recoverable. But Eraser will overwrite your files multiple times with a random string of 0s and 1s. This makes them unrecoverable.

No luck for me. Took in a 2005 Gateway with a Centrino process. Was in great shape, wiped HD wiped clean and fresh OS install. System would only recognize it as $0 so there was nothing they could do to override.
