There is a 10% rebate through Chase offers that might work for you.

I travel mainly to large cities and BW hotels are always in the worst areas and not even competitively priced. I assume they are nice when on a long road trip and need a hotel for the night.

Do you have to book through their website or can be booked using third party website?

They have to be “eligible night stays”, which means you have to earn BW points on what you spend for the stay and excludes “online travel agencies” (see T&Cs quoted in another Reply below). And thus it almost certainly requires booking through their website.

But through their website, you can try the promo code they offer constantly in emails, which is “emlrate” (yes, that’s a lower case “L” as the third letter in the promo code), by selecting Promotional as the kind of rate. I know from experience that this rate does earn BW points on what you spend for the stay.

Can you use free nights outside of USA?

I wonder if that kind of information might be in the post. Too bad there’s no way to find out. Guess we’ll never know.

The full T&Cs of the promo (viewable on their website when you’re logged in and go to Your Account and scroll down to Special Offers) say you will earn “a free night award redeemable at any Best Western branded hotel in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean Islands.” So a few places outside of the USA, but not far outside.

*An “eligible night stay” for the purpose of this promotion is defined as a night stay at any Best Western branded hotel in the United States, Canada, or the Caribbean Islands, at a rate eligible for earning points, with the exception of a night booked through an online travel agency, a night booked through a tour operator, or a night booked at a special discounted rate (see BWR program rules for further information on eligibility criteria at bestwesternrewards.com). Eligible nights can be consecutive or separate and at the same Best Western branded hotel or separate hotels. Eligible nights which take place during the Promotion Period must be completed on or before Sunday, September 4, 2022 to be counted towards the promotion.

If only someone would click on a link, scroll down, and spoonfeed Brian Kelly the T&C…

There is, however, a legit ambiguity as to whether using the “Pay with Points” feature to partially pay for a room counts towards the Free Night offer. Say for instance you applied 5,000 pts to get $25 off a rate, and remaining charge was $100, which is most definitely a rate that is eligible to earn points. It’s not a special discounted rate as far as I can see from how that phrase is used elsewhere by BW. The simple fact of using some points should not be disqualifying.

There is also the matter of the concurrent “Pay with Points” 2k offer, and the theory that the customer should get the best offer of the two, which is why the customer often receives both, nothwithstanding the “not valid with any other offer” language.

It’s really quite amazing when you consider how bureaucratized these modern corporations are, just bleeding money out of every hole to overpay layers of consultants, lawyers, and managers, and yet they are still so lazy that they cannot even harmonize their Terms and Conditions to account for the offers and features they actually have. Literally, in what world do you roll out a “Pay with Points” feature a couple of years ago and then NEVER UPDATE your T&Cs to account for it? They just do whatever the F they want, because the managers and CSRs aren’t lawyers, and they probably won’t get sued, and if they do, it’s always someone else’s fault.

I will be the datapoint you want to see on the issue I identified at the top, but we won’t find out until September.

Update: Received email stating that free night certificate would be issued. This was after 2 separate stays, one cash and one partial-pay-with-points.
