Bluebird/Serve Shuts Down More Cards Today

The news came in today with dozens of people being shut down on their Bluebird or Serve cards. As we documented a couple months ago, Amex is shutting out those who use their prepaid cards for purposes of manufacturing spend (MS).

Today, March 4, Amex axed the next bunch of accounts. Even some who didn’t do much MS had their accounts closed, apparently due to minor amounts of MS.

Note that many (but not all) of the shutdown accounts reported on Reddit are those who opened an account since November 2015. This is consistent with what we wrote in the previous post that many of those who weren’t closed initially had to do with the fact that the cards were just recently opened. Apparently, Amex gives some time from account opening before reviewing the accounts and shutting down the ‘abusers.’

In practice, today’s news is significant because it means (unsurprisingly) that Amex is serious about this whole thing, and that the previous shutdowns weren’t just a thinning of the ranks.

RIP

Man their is like no ms option that allows for no human interaction now (that is decent). Oh well.

There are mixed results of people reopening and being approved for new accounts after they initially closed their account.

Is there any stats somewhere?

I’m a bad man. Somehow – this made me feel a little better.

My two both got hit today.
Was anyone previously shut down able to open up a Redbird (for the Target 5% disc)?

Yes.

Initially I received a “Cannot open account at this time message” (or similar. However after waiting approx. 30 days, the application went through.

It is almost 30 days since I closed my card. I was considering trying to open new account with a different email address. Is that what you did? Did you also use a different phone #?

I didn’t need to change any account details.

Will you still be able to pay $2K to your credit card from your Bluebird account and then it’ll be permanently shut down? What happens to your value loads? I have $1,500 in spending I need to do on one of my cards before March 15 to meet minimum spend requirements. I intended on purchasing 3 $500 Visa gift cards and would load to my (still opened) Bluebird account. Thanks!

When you’re shut down with Serve, you are prevented from making any further loads. It’s not an issue for billpay or transferring the funds to your bank.

Can GoBank cards be loaded at KATEs?

If not, I’m out of this side of the game.

Amex is taking such a wide swipe. There are some horribly bad apples (and who feel entitled enough to think it’s their birth right to ms) and then there are smaller players.

The heavy hitters should be shut down. Why the small fish ?

Because none of them are profitable Serve customers.

It don’t see how it’s a good business decision not to shut down people who are simply using the card for MS, and I’m someone who got hit in the last round.

Got the axe today after loading 2k yesterday. I have another Serve account that was unactivated and will try to load what I can on that one until the next shutdown.

who is left???

I’m still here – my card definitely works; i loaded $500 to it yesterday.

I use it to meet spending requirements for signup bonuses (of course) but not “real” MS. I also use it for spending a few times a week, but most of the money I load into my account is offloaded via bill pay.

I have had a Bluebird, a Redbird, and an AFT before and have never been shut down. Here’s hoping that continues

I should add that my card was opened in late January 2016.

I’d consider yourself as good as shutdown in two months. There appears to be a lag of two to three months before they shut down newly opened cards. Use it while it lasts. 🙂

Has anyone tried a CFPB complaint for their Serve accounts? I can’t even withdraw my accounts so they’re cutting me a check

My account was opened on Jan 27th (received in the mail in Feb) and it was closed today 🙁

Wow that’s fast! Guess there’s no point hoping to get reapproved if they’ll shut us down with that little data.

Thanks for the data point, and have my condolences.

My family’s 4 BB cards are still alive, I think. Checked all spam folders and didn’t get any email yet.

I only load less than $1000 per month with mostly NW BUXX and few with VGC.
I use one to pay rent with checks and usually unload writing checks to other family members. I had few purchases before the 1st round closures, but not any after that.

I guess the only way to truly find out is going to Walmart and try loading, but so far I don’t see any sign of closure.

any online bill pays?

You can save yourself a trip to WM if you just want to find out whether your account is active or has been shutdown. All you have to do is make an online load and if it goes through, congrats! If not, you’ll see the dreaded message that you can no longer add funds to your account.

I got the email today. I did $4,000 of MS total in October/November time frame, but that was it. Haven’t used the card in 3-4 months and opened it in October.
