BMO Harris Offering Double Sign Up Bonuses (20,000/30,000 Points)

BMO Harris is currently offering double the sign up bonus they normally offer on the Platinum Rewards and Premium Rewards Mastercards. These offers are available until April 15th, 2018.

Keep reading for more information on each card:

BMO Harris Bank Platinum Rewards Mastercard

  • 20,000 points after $2,000 in spend within the first three months of account opening (worth $250 towards travel redemption)
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 2x points on gas and groceries (up to $2,500 in spend per quarter)
    • 1x points on all other purchases
  • 10% anniversary point bonus every year
  • No annual fee
  • 0% introductory APR on purchases for six months after account opening
  • 0% introductory APR on balance transfers for 12 months from date of first transfer when transfers are completed within 90 days of account opening

BMO Harris Bank Premium Rewards Mastercard

  • 30,000 points after $5,000 in spend within the first three months of account opening (worth $375 towards travel redemption)
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 3x points on dining, hotels and airfare (up to $2,500 in spend per quarter)
    • 1x points on all other purchases
  • 15% anniversary point bonus every year
  • Annual fee of $79 is waived first year
  • Complimentary Priority Pass Select membership and two-free visits per year
  • 0% introductory APR on purchases for six months after account opening
  • 0% introductory APR on balance transfers for 12 months from date of first transfer when transfers are completed within 90 days of account opening

Anniversary Bonus

This applies to base points earned (e.g it’s 15% bonus on 1x for the Premium Rewards card even if the purchase is on dining, rather than a 15% bonus on 3x). It also does not apply to the sign up bonus.

How Much Are Points Worth?

Points are worth 1.25¢ towards travel, it isn’t clear how much they are worth in other cases. I think they are worth 1¢ cash.

Our Verdict

I actually think the Premium card is pretty good value. It’s a shame the 15% bonus isn’t on the 3x, otherwise you’d be earning a total of 3.45 per $1 spent and those points are worth 1.25¢ towards travel/dining making it 4.3125% back. As it stands it works out to be 3.9375% back. Not as good as the Uber card for restaurant spend. The sign up bonus of $375 towards travel is still quite good, although the minimum spend requirement is high. This would be more of a bonus for people that have already hit up the lower hanging fruit and don’t have many opportunities available to them. Keep in mind BMO Harris doesn’t have the best record for customer service, don’t believe me? Read the comments on the checking bonus they offer.

It also isn’t 100% clear if this is open to all states or not (by this it looks like it is possible if you are out of state). Please share your experiences in the comments.

gift card redemption starts from terrible to OK value … $15 GC for 3500 Points … $25 needs 4500 points … $100 needs 12000 points .. actually we can check redemption value without logging into rewards site ….

Anyone know how points are used? Is it booking through a BMO Harris travel portal (like Merrill card) or is it statement credit on travel purchases (like Arrival+)?

Naga

it seems that booking is thru BMO travel portal

This may be the most important question that people are looking for the answer to: What do we know about BMO Harris Credit cards rules?

By that i mean, do they pull a certain / multiple credit bureaus?
Can you combine multiple pulls same day?
How many BMO Harris cards in what time period?

Before knowing any of these answers, i will not be applying.

I already know what the doc will say about these questions… be the data point you want to know! 🙂

LC

Yeah, i wont be that datapoint here but if people have applied/approved they can provide their personal experiences and we can use that information to develop estimates on how their criteria for credit cards rewards.

Site shows only 15K points for the Premium Card – not 30K. I don’t know where you got 30K! Plus here’s qual. parameters – “Welcome! BMO Harris Bank Premium Rewards Mastercard® is available to residents in these states: Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.”

Phill
Phill

The 30k is there as well as the limited states it’s open to.

Few more questions if anybody knows.
– Can you product change Premium to Platinum in a year?
– Can you combine points if you get both cards? Or transfer from one to another?

Thank you!

I opened a BMO Harris Cash Back Mastercard in late december, when it was the same bonus as the Rewards ($100 for $1k spend). Pulled Transunion in Florida.

How many new accounts/inquiries do you have on your profile? I need to know if BMO is inquiry/new account sensitive (personally have 15 new accounts in 24 months so…)

TJ
TJ

Sorry for the lateness of the reply, but I had an existing checking account, and 12+ new accounts on my credit report. Hardly any inquiries though because they pull TU

I went with their $300 checking bonus and after 4.5 months had to remind them that I fulfilled their conditions for the bonus. Branch manager called me an hour later and said they will credit me within 4-5 days but instead they credited me $200 (I would still have the print-out of their ad which states the $300) but this bank is so low qualified to distinguish 200 from 300 that I really don’t want to argue with them further and just close and move out… Will not go for any further offers with them.

I received my BMO HARRIS Plat Rewards card almost three months ago. I live in San Francisco so one could get the card as a California Resident at least. App process painfully slow and card kind of randomly shows up though.

Kevin
Kevin

@Christoph, were you a banking customer before the card?

@Liface, the states limitation seems to be only for non-banking customers. For banking customers, it doesn’t seem to apply.

Liface
Liface

How did that work? The website indicates it’s only available to “non-banking customers in these states: Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.”

According to this page ( https://www.bmoharris.com/main/personal/credit-cards/how-to-apply/#new-bmo-harris-customers ), the card is open to non-banking customers in these states: Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.

Instant approval for the premium rewards card. Used the Doc link which stated 30k sign up bonus. However the email they sent me after I was approved says 15k after 2.5k spend. Should I be alarmed? Kansas resident here. Tia

I went for the platinum rewards card with the special promotion of 20,000 points for $2,000 spend. I was instantly approved and I too, received an approval email with their regular promotion. Yes, I would be alarmed. Often with BMO, bonuses require manual intervention. I took screen shots before application and will use CFPB if they don’t post the bonus points (after first requesting them to do so, of course).

Card arrived today. Included with the usual T&C papers was a paper copy of the bonus offer. 30,000 bonus points when you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months of account opening. Also mentions 2 other cards, Premier services premium rewards with a 40k bonus and Wealth management premium rewards with a 50k point bonus.

Darv

Huh! Thanks for the update Corban. I also reviewed BMO’s rewards program FAQ and we can pool points between cards, although not between spouse or other account holders. It’s likely I will apply for one of their others to leverage the first card. Here is their FAQ:

Got my wife approved for the Premium card. Since there was an insert (paper) saying that all new accounts from Jan 19 to April 15 will get the double points deal I am not concerned they will fulfill. They pulled TU here in FL.

Kevin
Kevin

Curious, how do you know they pulled TU?

Darv

Use Credit Karma to track your TransUnion and Equifax reports, including recent pulls to either bureau. Credit Karma doesn’t always send instant emails when pulls happen so usually I’ll check their website after an application.

Darv
Darv

Thanks for the update. Was her approval instant or did it go pending?

I wonder what will happen when I apply for the second card.

Have you or has anyone else gotten their cards yet? Were they generous with credit lines? As best I can tell, I need to register my card through a separate website–not linked to my deposit accounts site.

By chance, anybody know if you can book Southwest flights using these points? Stacked with a companion pass, this becomes attractive…

Darv
Darv

It is worth noting that in the terms and conditions of the offer, nowhere does it say you can’t do both of these cards. I already opened the Platinum card and I’ll probably apply for the Premium once my spending bandwidth opens up a bit. It might be nice to pool points to further leverage travel bookings. Who knows if this is possible?

Any current BMO Harris customers try applying for this? The site says to login and go to Products and Services, but all of the old (non double) offers are listed there. I tried applying there but technical errors with two different browsers. Any current customers able to see the increased offers and able to apply while be logged in? Thanks

Edit: Nevermind. Got one to go through. Didn’t show the higher offer but CSR over the phone said all applications will receive the increased offer regardless.

TJ

I don’t see any way to apply now except at the bank if you are NOT an existing customer – if you do the “New customer” it now tells you to apply at the bank, and existing customer tells you to login. I tried to apply for my wife as an existing customer, it errored out in Chrome (no hard pull done – I checked TU before I applied again), worked in Internet Explorer. Who knows which bonus I’ll get and whether it will be automatic.
