Currently Cathay Pacific Asia Miles expire 36 months after they were earned and there is no way to extend them. Cathay Pacific has announced that starting January 1st, 2020 miles won’t expire as long as you have some qualifying activity every 18 months. Basically any activity that earns or uses your miles counts as a qualifying activity. Unfortunately this change is not retroactive so any miles earned before December 31st, 2019 will still be subject to the 36 month rule. United recently announced changes to its mileage expiration policy as well.
Overall I see this as a net improvement for most customers, although some will undoubtedly be worse off under this change (e.g if you don’t have any activity miles now expire every 18 months instead of 36). It’s also frustrating that this change will not be applied retroactively.
Never had Asia miles but looking into them now. Would like to sign up for the 50k bonus on ther credit card if it comes back. There are some crazy loopholes for redemptions. Interested in trying.
“Cathay says that members will be able to renew those “old miles to be subject to the new expiration policy for a small fee.
Miles earned under the time-based system can be renewed to the new activity-based system subject to the payment of a service fee (online: USD40; other channels: USD100). Miles earned under the new activity-based system cannot be renewed.” According to Nick@FM. So the new policy can apply retroactively with a fee.
$40 for 1000 miles, if I remember correctly. That’s NOT a SMALL fee.
About time. Now i can start hoarding asia miles as well. But it is ridiculous that its not retroactive, I already have 150k sitting in my asia miles account. I wonder if i can do a booking, then cancel (refund the miles) with a small penalty in 2020, so the new policy will apply…
I think that’s explicitly excluded.
