[VA, WV, OH only] City National Bank $100 Checking Bonus

Update: New link found works for branches in VA, WV, OH. Thanks to reader Gadget.

Please note, this isn’t the same City National Bank that offers the Visa Infinite card.

Offer at a glance

  • Maximum bonus amount: $100
  • Availability: VA WV OH in branch only. [Branch locator]
  • Direct deposit required: Yes, $200+
  • Additional requirements: None
  • Hard/soft pull: Soft pull
  • ChexSystems: Yes, not sensitive
  • Credit card funding: Unknown
  • Monthly fees: None
  • Early account termination fee: $25, 180 days
  • Household limit: One
  • Expiration date: None listed

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • City National Bank is offering a bonus of $100 when you open a new city checking account with direct deposit of $200 or more
  • Seems to only be possible to open account in branch [Branch locator]. They also have other bonuses for other states they operate in, but only for $50.

The Fine Print

  • Bonus: Limited time offer. To earn the $100 direct deposit bonus, you must establish a qualified recurring direct deposit of $200 or more into the account.
  • The bonus will be deposited into the new account 91 days after account opening.
  • Limitations: The bonus cannot be used as the opening deposit.
  • Offer not available to existing checking account customers, those with fiduciary accounts or those whose account has been closed.
  • Limit 1 bonus per household.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

They offer a simply free checking account with no monthly fees to worry about. There is an early account termination fee of $25 if you close the account within 180 days.

Our Verdict

I generally don’t recommend $100 bonuses that must be opened in branch, but might be worth it for some if they live near a branch. Purely because it’s usually a lot of work for a $100 bonus that is also taxed. Because of this I won’t be adding it to our best bank bonus page.

Big thanks to reader, KK who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

I might jump on this one, but nearest “office” is in the next town over, so in no hurry. Sounds almost identical to the VA only Union Bank & Trust in-branch offer I did last December, where the “recurring” word was used, and would not pay out until the 2nd deposit from the same source posted.

Applied yesterday in branch. Per banker, and sign on her desk, they pull Chex. Said no hard CR pull, and I haven’t been notified of any HP. No indication of Chex sensitivity (I’m at 15+ for the year), and I walked out with my account, starter checks, and user ID. Had to provide $25 opening deposit. Didn’t ask about CC funding, as I have never seen that work in branch. Time suck – account opening took around 30 mins or more.

Assurance: Terms of $100 promo prints-out on the “Truth in Savings” disclosure as part of the acct opening paperwork. I did ask if opening online would have qualified, and per the banker, she wasn’t sure if it would have. She specifically said that others had asked her this, and speculated that maybe it was an incentive to get people to come into the branch. No expiration date for offer is listed on terms.

Toll-Free support: Banker recommended I save the online banking/bill pay toll-free number in my cell, in case I ever had any online issues. I would think that would be the same number you could call to ask about getting the bonus via online signup. Ph: 1-888-816-8064 8A-8P M-F, 8-5 Sat.

Not churnable: I qualified for the community hero account, so I get free checks and no fees. Promo terms for bonus make it sound as if this is a once in a lifetime bonus, so I may hang onto this account for awhile as long as they are competent and can’t churn the bonus.

I will provide an update when I get my bonus, or sooner if something SNAFU’s. Doing real DD Feb. 1st, and probably a couple ACH’s this month to hopefully expedite the bonus. I usually wait a week to ensure they don’t close the account for CHEX sensitivity before initiating transfers.

About a week after acct was opened, I saw online they offer $5 for going to e-statements. Signed up inside online banking, and about another week later got my $5 bonus for this. “DEPOSIT ES BONUS CITY NATL BK WV ID:####”

Credit union ACH hasn’t triggered bonus, hitting a Schwab ACH this week, and real DD will Feb 1st.

This bank did not pull EWS – confirmed via EWS report pull. No hard pull, only Chex.

DoC, this showed up in Google ad network today. Appears to be for WV, OH, VA.

WV, not WH

Where is WH?

Nothing on that page seems to indicate the bonus is limited to those States.
They also have branches in Lexington Kentucky.

The website now makes it sound like you have to open the Gold Checking, even though it says checking account elsewhere on same page. If that is the case, at $5 a month and not waived for Gold Checking, this deal got a lot worse.

I may close my account soon and have SO try. I will post what ends up happening, if she goes for it. The whole in branch only is such a pain. Will probably call ahead and see what the banker says about it.
