Cathay Pacific Awards Now Bookable On American Airlines Website

It’s now possible to book Cathay Pacific partner awards on the American Airlines website. We previously saw American Airlines add the same availability for Etihad in May & Japan in July. It was already possible to book these awards via the phone, now it’s just also possible to book online. Some people will actually see this as a bad thing as presumably more people will be booking the awards and availability will be more difficult to find.

More and more je ne sais quoi of TPG and boardingarea is non existent.

Now they have become more and more credit card and checking account bonus website than trip reports and tricks about flying.

Would this be a good reason to get that Barclay Aviator Red card that I saw on DoC? I normally don’t fly with AA, but I do travel in Asia a lot, and can think of many chances to use Cathay Pacific. But I’ve never used AA before, never used the miles before.. so just wondering since now Cathay Pacific is available with AA miles.. is now a good time to go for the Barclay Aviator Red card?

Thanks!

I like the Aviator for no AF and an easy 60K of AA points… Pretty easy to get enough for RT J class ticket on AA.com now.

I would be careful though if not under 6/24. I’ve seen a lot of datapoints that it’s effecting all cards now.

I had a bad experience recently. I booked a etihad flight from DEL to LHR via AUH. AA booked the ticket in economy basic and then at the airport, I got to know that bags are not included in it. I had to eventually cancel the ticket since the baggage fees was too much. Any way to avoid this scenario next time while booking on AA website?

Must have been a wicked baggage fee

This comment is mindboggling. You had a ticket, and a plan to fly from India to England, got to the airport and cancelled an award because luggage was too much? Did you have 5 bags weighing 50 kg each? Did you throw away your ticket? WTF?

Etihad asked for almost $700 fee for 1 bag of 23kg. and we had 2 bags. and this was only 1 way. They asked us to get the tickets reissued from AA with bags added (basically non-basic economy) but AA did not do anything. So cancelled with AA. AA refunded the points but charged cancellation fee. It was a nightmare. Booked another flight on finnair leaving later after 5 hours with card.

I have never seen those kind of baggage fees. May be they do that for people who have not done advance addition of baggage but a very bad experience overall.

Chris

Personally as long as I have an aisle coach is tolerable on flights 5 to 6 hours tops, moreso if wife has seat next to me. Domestic or Int’l (with some exceptions seats on 787).

Typically you can find cash flights that are a better deal if you can book far enough out or close in.

But 7-10+ hours Prem Economy or lie flat seats are more of a necessity at this stage in our lives, especially when traveling for lesiure.

That said only so many lie flat awards available – so this move will likely make those transpac award flights harder to find.

But to many TPAC or TATL destinations from West coast are 9~15+ hours.

While domestic awards deal can be found it seems like just as much effort to find as the Int’l lie flat awards.

As well most domestic travel you can get away with carry on- where as longer Int’l bags that are to large for carry-ons are more necessary -but premium cabins tend to included at least 1 free if not two checked bags.

12hr flight in the back with you own row in economy is fine. talk about first world problems.

Definitely a first world problem (esp most things connected with this hobby).

That empty row of five seats on a widebody TPAC or TATL flight was the original lie-flat seat or “hobo lie-flat seat”

I haven’t seen an empty enough Int’l flight nor had status to get an empty row when I was a UA 1K, since before they had true lie flat seats and they still allowed smoking on Int’l flights (but upgrades we’re common).

But I can’t sleep unless I am almost horizontal, and at my age my back starts bitchin at me after sitting for more than 1-2 hours.

But agreed a First world problem, and if not for this hobby I doubt I would venture on some of the further destinations.

fair enough, i just ask the agent at the desk give me a empty row in back. im in hkg currently just did jfk-hkg on cx in a 2 seater row 70 that was empty, only 5’8 but that was minimum to lay sideways 🙂 in my early 30s so in 10 yrs ill change my mind most likely.

Some of the worst turbulence I’ve ever experienced was on an MD-80 flying from NAIA to Kai Tak (old HKG airport).

I remember when Kwangchow (Guangzhou) had few skyscrapers and vast swaths of farmland. I have family (in-laws) that live in TST. Interesting times this past summer with the two state one country challenges. We have plans to visit this next year but not excited about the flight may use VA miles to get to ICN, PVG, or HND from west coast. Or if we have the AS miles then CX VYR-HKG. The unrest doesn’t bother me, but I was hoping that it would open ore award travel seats versus them cutting flights. Avoid the blue dyed water – lol.

I think it’s a bad thing not because of availability, but the fact that AA would likely to move to dynamic pricing after you can book all partner awards online

For both reasons. Pick which is worse.
