Chase Expands Grocery Definition For Pay Yourself Back

Chase’s Pay Yourself Back feature allows you to redeem points at a rate of 1.25¢ (Chase Sapphire Preferred) and 1.5¢ towards grocery, dining and charity purchases. Unfortunately when it first launched some merchant category codes weren’t considered grocery and it wasn’t possible to redeem points against these charges. It looks like Chase has expanded this definition (not sure if only for PYB). Might be worth checking your accounts if you have points you want to redeem and no charges to redeem them against to see if any old transactions have been recoded.

Some charges that weren’t eligible but now are include: Hello Fresh, Green Chef, and Vitamin Shoppe, Misc Food Stores – convenience and speciality markets.

Can someone explain how this is beneficial? I have over 300K UR. Are people using this benefit because they don’t think they will fly? Or am I missing something?

I used it for about 200k UR but i had a balance of 1.1M to start with and I use a lot of points through the portal at 1.5cpp anyway. Harder to find those aspirational bookings with a family of 5 but at least we get to travel more.

I used nearly all of points since 1.5ccp is not bad.
I also think I will accrue enough points by the time I’m ready to travel again. Churn and burn baby .

They added Imperfect food for me and I was able to pay myself back finally on charges 3 months ago.

Question is what is gonna happen on September 30th?

DP 7-11 Gas purchases (???) THROUGH THEIR APP ONLY from back in July are now suddenly showing for me. In-store purchases are not.

Still never earned 5x on those charges, I guess they’re coded wrong.

Pre natal vitamins can be reimbursed through flex accounts so if you happen to be buying them at vitamin shoppe anyways, might as well get a double discount

I have some charges that were through Square that became eligible now. Stuff like an ice cream parlor that got 3x dining points but for some reason wasn’t eligible for PYB.

I wish this and “Pay yourself back” can be extended after 9/30, otherwise, I have to buy a lot of Instacart gift cards for “pay yourself back”, which earns only 1X.

Can’t you just buy other Gift Cards (Amazon, Visa, Best Buy, etc.) at grocery store and pay yourself back?

I have been buying from my local grocery store. Have not tried Wal-Mart.

It’s unlikely this will work as Walmart probably isn’t classified as “grocery”.

It was never announced that it would be ending in September, so no extension is needed. It was announced in the original announcement that the group of categories for Pay Yourself Back would change from time to time, and that the first group would last through September 30.

Are you saying you can buy instacart giftcards and they are eligible for reimbursement?

Yes, and the GC can be used both on instacart.com and sameday.costco.com. But only earns 1X rather than 5X(CSR)/3X(CSP).

No. It’s select charities only, the list is in the FAQ.

Only selected organizations count for PYB, including American Red Cross, Equal Justice Initiative, Feeding America, Habitat for Humanity, International Medical Corporation, Leadership Conference Education Fund, NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, National Urban League, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, United Negro College Fund, United Way, and World Central Kitchen.
