[Confirmed] Chase Freedom & Freedom Flex Q4 5% Category – Paypal and Walmart (Flex Q3 Categories Discussion)

Update 9/14/20: This is now confirmed as Walmart and PayPal; it’s showing in the Chase Ultimate Rewards login (not yet showing at the public Freedom link). There’s an added note, “Qualifying purchases made using PayPal at Walmart will only earn a total of 5%”. I assume Walmart will include both Walmart stores and Walmart.com; hopefully they’ll clarify when the public link goes live.

Original Post 9/13/20:

Reader Amit was told when product changing to the Chase Freedom Flex card that the categories for Q4 2020 will be PayPal and Walmart. This is not yet showing on the Chase site; it typically shows up on the 14th or 15th of September.

I love the Paypal category since that can be used almost anywhere.

Amit was told further that the Freedom Flex card does not have access to the Q3 2020 categories. This is surprising since you’d think we’d have the next two weeks to take advantage of the the Q3 categories. Let us know what you are seeing/hearing.

Update: Other reader say that they do see the 5% category available for all product changes. Separately, a reader notes that you must activate Freedom categories by September 15th, so the question of whether Flex has the categories is only relevant for someone who product changes or applies for the card immediately.

Chase has an offer on freedom card for 20% back on chick fillet purchase. If I add funds to my CFA account from the CFA app and pay via a PayPal using my linked Freedom card would I get 25% back ( 20+5) ?

I’m in a pickle. Here’s my scenario:

I’m 5/24 and will fall to 4/24 on Dec. 13. I’m getting Chase Freedom Flex for sure but don’t know whether to apply on Dec. 13 or 14th. My 5/24 card was opened exactly on December 13, 2018. The last day to activate Q4 5% category is Dec. 14th.

Should I apply for CFF on Dec. 13 or 14th and hope 5/24 doesn’t affect me and if I can activate the quarterly category on time? Or should I just play it safe, forget the quarterly category and just apply on the 15th?

I think the big assumption you’re making is that you’ll be instant approved anyway. With Chase, that’s never a guarantee. And given your situation, you’re likely to go pending (since you’re supposed to wait like a month after falling away from 5/24, to be safe).
However, fortune favors the brave lol and I’d suggest you to go for it on the 14th and if you don’t get approved, talk to manual recon in a few weeks explaining your situation and you should be fine.

Yes, I’m making a lot of assumptions. I did gather some more information and just found out about the next month after 24 months. I do know for a fact that they pull EX and TU for me, so this is more likely to apply to me.

I still have time to sit on it and see if I want to apply on the 14th.

I was surprised to find out today that the spend maximum is not $1500 across both categories but $900 for PayPal and $600 Walmart. I thought it was $1500 combined so had spent over $1400 on PayPal thinking I was getting 5% the whole time. Had to dig in the FAQ to see that. It’s not advertised anywhere else, probably on purpose.

It’s $1500 across both categories. The FAQ is just giving an example with $900 & $600.

Anyone else using this bonus and only receiving 4% (Bonus from 4Q 5% category: Walmart) + 1% /$1 on all purchases . It appears I’m only receiving 4% for the 5% bonus.

I checked out with PayPal on United Airlines and it only coded as 1x. I’ve had to contact SM in the past and a credit was manually issued. Not having the same luck this time.

Since Q4 has now officially started, does anyone have a recent experience with buying VGC’s at a Walmart store?
Thanks… 🙂

So strange of Chase to use the language Paypal AT Walmart instead of Paypal AND Walmart.

Has anyone confirmed that its only Walmart USING paypal or is that a mix up? Did they mean Walmart AND paypal?

I paid using PayPal on a website that’s NOT Walmart.com and it’s showing I received 5x the points on the purchase.

My understanding is that they are saying if you pay at Walmart with Paypal, you won’t earn 10% (5% Walmart + 5% Paypal) cashback. Otherwise you earn 5% with either one.

I’m obviously missing something, because when I choose to pay via Credit Card with PayPal there is a ~2% transaction fee. What is the workaround, or what am I overlooking? Thanks.
