Anyone know if the Safeway gift cards work at all of the “Safeway family” of stores?

Robert Cobbert Yes. I have personally used Safeway gift cards at numerous Albertsons-owned stores all over the country.

It’s actually “Albertsons” gc, not Safeway. If you look at the picture Will provided it is good at all of the stores (Acme, Safeway, etc.).

Just saw that $5 off $50 at CVS is back on my Chase checking debit card. Might be helpful for some folks.

Question:

Does anyone know if you can use a Safeway/Albertsons giftcard to purchase a VGC in store?
(does the POS system allow it)

It isn’t hard coded to prevent it. I’ve used partial ones when buying VGC. Best to mix in some groceries.

Thx. Too bad Chase is $100 max per GC.

Celia : when you say ‘partial ones’, does that mean you swipe the giftcard first, it drains it automatically, and then you can pay the rest with another payment method? TIA… 🙂

Yes, that’s what I meant. 🙂

I use my Amex Lowe’s 10% offer to buy Amazon gift card and then buy Safeway gift cards from Amazon. So I tend to have a lot of lower denomination ones. I don’t like to risk do a ton of swipes and draw attention.

Damn, wish my Safeway wasn’t so far away. Amazon sells Safeway GC too. What a perfect positive feedback loop.

Have you done this lately? I did it a few times last year with a small Albertsons eGC and it worked. I always did it partial like you.

Did it last week with the MasterCard 2 x $100 deal. Used a $25 jewel-Osco card and my discover card. I had a few groceries items as well.

Celia Lucky you! Cashiers in my area always match name on the credit/debit card with my ID, ALL of them. Funny thing is they recognize me by face because I am a regular VGC buyer, but they still perform the name-match. I would love to know if there is a trick to bypass this. TIA.

No trick. They went through a phase of checking ID for all gift card purchases years ago but that’s about it.

I would gladly trade my ability to do it at the grocery store with the ability to liquidate at Walmart with MOs. No can do anywhere around here so I am limited to using for organic spend. 🙂

I guess that answers my other question. Since you use it for organic spend you’d rather have a smaller Visa gc, correct?

What area is this?

Eric I’m in the Chicago suburbs. When I have a 5% card to use, I usually go for the $500 cards even for organic spend because it is a better deal but in this case the deal was specifically for the 2 x $100 cards. I did do the $500 on the Meijer one of $10 off $150+ when I had to get groceries. But now I am on lockdown. Hopefully more deals will pop up before the end of Q2 for my Chase grocery spend.

Isn’t buying a $500 Visa gc a better deal even without the discount?

Jay - ⒿⒶⓨ 🙈 🙉 🙊 I think its too much risk if your goal is to pay for a VGCs with Safeway/Albertsons GC. Most of the time the cashiers are checking your payment method as soon as you tell them that you are doing $500 VGCs. I think it is just better to pay the $5.95 fee and be done with it. Last thing I want to be labelled is a scammer.

How is using an Albertsons gc to pay being a “scammer”? If they allow it you aren’t scamming anyone. They could easily disable it from working like S&S did 1 or 2 years ago.

Groceries earn 5% UR on Freedom so that makes this deal almost a 1c redemption equivalent.

That’s why you use the gift cards when there is no 5% alternatives, i.e. Q3 and Q4 🙂

Given the lack of travel options these, 10% off at the grocery store can be sort of appealing for some. Will pass it on. Thanks DoC!
