Our Verdict

The current best deal is 60,000 miles after $3,000 in spend, but the beauty of that offer is that you can request a match to 75,000 miles and they seemingly match everybody. In general it seems that Citi has matched to higher American Airlines bonuses as long as the match is no more than 20,000 additional miles (e.g they won’t match 50,000 to 75,000). I had assumed that because this offer contained a statement credit component they wouldn’t match, but there is at least one person that has been matched. Personally I don’t see them continuing to match people that have signed up for the statement credit offer, but if you can get matched then 70,000 miles + $200 in statement credits towards American Airlines purchases is significantly better than 75,000 miles. The 75,000 mile offer is better than 50,000 miles + $200 though. Feel free to share your own matching datapoints in the comments below.

Before applying or asking basic questions in the comments make sure you read these things everybody should know about Citi cards here. Also keep in mind this offer contains the following language:

  • American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have had any Citi® / AAdvantage® card (other than a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® card) opened or closed in the past 24 months.

We discuss this in more detail here.

How long does the $200 credit take to post after the American Airlines transaction appears/clears on the card (i.e. my card now shows my balance as the full flight cost, which was more than $200)? Thanks!

I tried to match through SM, like I have with my other cards, and the rep referred me to call a number that deals with matching. Has anyone has this happen before?

I know the post indicates Expired now but FWIW the offer link goes to a 40k + $100 SC offer. Between this and the CiP I have really bad timing lately.

Previous DPs suggest Citi doesnt match more than 20-25K. But YMMV.

There’s some conflicting information in the comments, so I wanted to post my DP. I purchased a $100 AA eGift Card on July and got the $100 statement credit when my statement closed. I will now purchase another gift card for another $100 bonus.

Another datapoint here. I purchased a $50 AA eGiftcard a couple months ago and then a $150 AA eGiftcard last month. Both got reimbursed immediately after the statement closed at the end of each month.

another DP of the 50,000 / $200 matched to 70,000 just got the SM reply today 8/5/18. approved for the card on 7/27.

really happy with this especially with no annual fee and the statement credit. thanks so much  William Charles you have earned our family tens of thousands of dollars in bank bonuses and travel rewards. so i can’t thank you enough.

hoping to use these miles with the 75K business AA card and potentially the BarclayCard Aviator to take my wife and daughter to visit our family in India next year. would love to use Qatar or Etihad business class so we’ll see how it goes.

Not sure if anyone still interested in the DP since the offer has expired but I also requested and got matched to 70K. Here is the language I used:

Hello I applied for and was approved for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card with the 50,000 miles bonus on $2,500 spend a few days ago. Shortly after I noticed a bonus offer of 70,000 miles. I would like to know if I can be granted a courtesy match to the 70,000 bonus offer. Hoping for favorable consideration. Thank you and have a great day!

Did you wait until you received your card before sending the secure message? Without a registered account, how did you send that message? I just applied for the 50K bonus card and now wish to make the same request for the additional miles – thanks

I did the 50,000 offer and just got matched to 70,000. I created an account and submitted the request via the secure message center on the citi website. Here was my request (verbiage was very similar to another DoC users post).

“Hello, I applied and was approved for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card with a 50000 miles bonus on $2500 in spend a few days ago. Shortly after, I noticed a bonus offer of 70000 miles. I am requesting a match to the 70000 miles bonus offer. Hoping for a favorable consideration for my new account. I’ve heard good things about Citi customer service! Kind Regards”

A big thank you to DoC and those who posted comments on this page. Very helpful!
