Citi To Launch Citi Pay In Early 2017

Citibank have announced the launch of their own mobile wallet in Singapore & Australia, they plan to roll out into the U.S. in early 2017. It seems that this is really just a rebranding though, as they’ve partnered with Mastercard and will be using their Masterpass digital payment service.

The mobile payment/wallet space is getting quite crowded with Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay and then other financial institutions such as Chase pay also entering the market as well as each payment network launching their own payment services.

Fingers crossed this leads Citi and others to offer more bonuses for adding cards and using their mobile wallets. I imagine the recent upgrades Citi have made to their mobile app offerings (e.g ability to lock a card & ability to dispute a transaction) are an effort to get more cardholders engaged with their app ahead of the Citi Pay launch.

So that’s where all that citi programming was going! I wish that Citi would get their website’s UI onto Chase’s level…
