[Expired] Citi ThankYou Preferred Now No Spend Requirement on 20k Bonus

The Offer

Direct Link

  • Signup for the ThankYou Preferred card from Citi and get 20,000 ThankYou points upon approval – no spending required.

The regular rewards offered by the card are: 2 ThankYou points per dollar on entertainment & restaurants, and 1 point per dollar on all other spend. The card has no annual fee.

Final Thoughts

Assuming this move is intentional and not a glitch, it’s an interesting approach taken by Citi to make a basic card seem very easy and appealing for the everyday user who may find spend-thresholds to be a hurdle.

I was considering applying until I saw the below term. I already have a Preferred card that is collecting dust.

“Bonus ThankYou® Points not available if you have had a Citi ThankYou Preferred card opened or closed in the past 18 months.”

I think you can get another one if you are auto approved and opened the other one `18 months ago or more.

Where did you read that? Even if it says it somewhere I don’t think I would risk it as they could always enforce that term.

Any idea if they differentiate Visa versus MC, like the AA cards?

Anyone know how much cash the 20,000 points is worth??

Funny story forgot Sams club dont take Visa today so had to apply for a Sams Mastercard and received $40 off my purchase. (Nice surprise).

Can these TYP be transferred to airline partners (maybe pool with a prestige/premier?). Or they’re like the checking account kind that are separate?

I’m pretty sure this is a mistake that Citi made based on the wording. Do they usually honor mistakes?

It’s so obviously a mistake…”0 in purchases in 3 months”…why specify a timeline? If anything it’s after your first purchase in 3 months.

Everyone is posting about this without addressing the elephant in the room, which is as you say, will they honor an absurd mistake like this? Usually T&C are pretty lopsided with them being able to reneg for whatever reason so I wouldn’t count on it.

it seems to apply to most of their card now, but definitely is a glitch. Any datapoint if this will be honoured ?

is 20k TYP really worth burning an app? most bonuses i favor are more in the 40k+ range

I don’t think it’s a mistake; it seems to happen randomly. Open private browsing and try it. I had to try a couple times before I saw the offer. Maybe Citi is trying to see if they get more applications with this type of offer.

Can this card be used to keep Premier points valid after canceling the Premier card? I have to do the same for my BRG card from Amex.

Applied for my wife and had to call in today. They said it is still pending since their system is down (glitching) and probably will hear something in 24-48 hours. She said the offer was 20k for $1500 in spend. Not sure if the glitch is showing the 0 spend. I have screen shots so I will see how this plays out once we get the approval and secure message them.

Link now shows 20k fot $1500 in spend. Definitely was a glitch.

I applied when the promo was live 20,000 thank you pts for $0 spend on the 25th of Dec. I should have taken a screenshot. Anyway, the rep says that my offer was for $1500 min spend.

Did you take any pictures of the offer?

During application process, I received confirmation of the $0 purchases for 20,000 bonus points. (did not take screenshots) Got approval letter paperwork and listed it as $1500 for the 20k.

Talked with Citi CS and they refused to honor the $0 purchases in exchange for 20k bonus.
