Our Verdict
There was a $100 bonus in the past, but that required military pay. This is a better bonus anyway. We will add this to our list of the best bank account bonuses.

Ooops, correct to the churning comment I made below…the terms I just read on their website says anyone who has ever gotten a bonus from them isn’t eligible.
So…just keep it open and gather your $300/year. 😀
Also, I am trying to convince a friend to do this bonus but they cannot change their diredt deposit. I would ask if anyone has had success with Vanguard triggering the DD requirement?
Have him get FCMA or Wise, those are easy to open and usually work if you dont have a biz account
I don’t know if I ever posted this data point….
**USAA ACH has worked to trigger the direct deposit requirement both for the bonus AND for the 10% cash back monthly (on the first $250 in purchases with a min of 12 transactions).**. I even initiate the transfer on the AACU side and it STILL works.
As an aside….If anyone is debating pulling the trigger on completing this bonus, DO IT! I posted about my positive experience back in November….it’s now almost 5 months later and I am still super happy with them! No issues.
The offer terms make it sound like you COULD churn the opening bonus every 6 months; however, given the CHEX sensitivity, I am just keeping the account open and collecting the easy $300/year.
I just opened a cash back checking account and it was a hard pull.
Ouch. That’s new. But, did they lighten up on their Chex sensitivity they had last year?
Which report? Experian, I assume.
Bo
2.21.25 – Opened a Cash Back Rewards Checking Account and Primary Savings Account (required to open checking).
2.21.25 – Funded Checking Account with $200 (bonus requirement) and Savings with $5 (minimum balance requirement) using Chase Credit Card. Processed as a transaction and not a cash advance.
2.25.25 – Made a transfer from personal Navy Fed CU checking account of $150. It shows as a P2P external transfer code on the AACU transactions, but seems to have fulfilled the “direct deposit” requirement once it posted on 2.26.25.
3.3.25 – Debit card arrived by mail.
3.5.25 – Debit card activated. Option to enroll in eStatements (required to avoid monthly fees) was still not showing up on my account. I called, they adjusted a setting, and it was immediately remedied while I was on the phone. Easy breezy, no hassle or holding forever.
3.6.25 – Used the debit card (bonus requirement) at Walmart. “Bonus Payment New Checking” of $250 posted to my account the same day.
2/21/2025 – opened checking and savings accounts. Savings account with $5 minimum is required to open the checking account. Funded with credit card in application process – $5 minimum for savings, $200 for the checking deposit requirement.
Current bonus is for $250.
I initially did this for the bonus, but the 10% cashback on the first $250 in debits is a nice bonus too. That’s another $300/year.
It becomes a bit of an accountability thing..making sure to hit 12 transactions AND max out the $250 (it would be easier if the number of transactions wasn’t an issue) but worth it.
I tend to pad the transaction count with several $5 Amazon reloads and at the same time I use it for some moderate other purchases until I hit the $250.
My P2 tried to open this account as OOS Military family, not even for the bonus, but just the cash back rewards. Denied. However, it truly doesn’t say Chex was the reason for denial. Instead, it’s ambiguous when you look at the Adverse Action.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate your request to open a deposit account with our institution at this time for one of the following reasons:
• We are unable to verify documents you have provided.
• Your application expired.
• Information was obtained in a consumer report from the consumer reporting agency
listed below.
Agency listed: Chex Systems, Inc.
Inquiries/Months (not counting AACU): 2/1, 2/2, 4/3, 7/6, 14/12, 26/24.
Insult to injury, AAFCU (AACU) pulled Chex the day of application, and the day they chose to deny the application.
In other news, P1, as an existing member, got the new Visa debit card in the mail last week. They aren’t allowing the new card to be activated until Oct. 2nd. Curious to see if “spend” will be as simple on the new card as it was on the MasterCard.
This is a weird bank when it comes to Chex. I tried to open an account in branch, since their online application system didn’t appear to be working for a while ( couldn’t receive phone verification message), the banker said she needed to check with supervisor after pulling my chex on the spot. A few hours later I received a denial. A few months later I tried to open an account online with chex frozen, it went to review, and they approved it after review without asking me to thaw chex. So I guess it comes down to who was reviewing the application.
Yup, as Steve said. Got denied due to Chex
If you have a lot on chex, don’t bother with this one
