The Offer

• Both you and your friend get $10 in free bitcoin when your friend completes KYC and buys or sells $100 of crypto on CoinList in a single transaction.
• For each referral, both you and your friend also get 1 ticket for a chance to win 1 free bitcoin.

The Fine Print

• Each user must sign up and complete KYC.
• Each user must deposit and make a buy or sell order (or orders in aggregate) of $100 (or cryptocurrency equivalent) before the end of the period.
• For each eligible referral, users will receive 0.0015 BTC (~$10 in BTC), which shall be deposited into such user’s CoinList wallet subject to eligibility, on a periodic basis through the competition period, rewards will be distributed approximately 4 days after an eligible referral.
• Only one entity per user is eligible.
• The referral period will end on April 30th, 11:59:59 UTC. Any referrals made after this date will not credit either the referring user or their friend with either the referral bonus or the ticket.   The referral program now has no set end date
• Each user can earn multiple referral bonuses and tickets.
• The winner will be selected once 10,000 referral tickets have been awarded.
• The winner of the competition will be announced shortly following the end referral via email. The winner of the competition agrees to have their name used in additional CoinList marketing materials in association with this competition.
• CoinList reserves the right to not award rewards for any reason at its sole discretion.
• CoinList Markets reserves the right to change the Rules or cancel the Referral Competition at any time in its sole and absolute discretion.
• All new users of CoinList are eligible for zero-fee trading for 30 days after completing KYC.
• There are a maximum of 4,000 referral bonuses (6 BTC) and 10,000 referral tickets available during the period.
• The owner of the winning ticket in the competition which shall take place on or after April 30th at 11:59:59 UTC will receive 1 BTC, subject to eligibility, which shall be deposited into such user’s CoinList wallet.

My Experience

• Account Setup was fairly quick (5-10 minutes)
  • KYC required name, address, DoB, SSN, drivers license (front, back), phone, occupation
  • I skipped the accredited investor form
• But trading is very limited, looks like you can only buy/sell BTC, ETH, ALGO, or OXT
  • When I saw the CoinList wallet supported USDC (a US dollar stable coin) my plan was simply to transfer in $100 in USDC and sell it for actual US dollars to trigger the bonus, but that does NOT appear possible.  [Update 2020-07-02: CoinList now supports the stablecoin DAI, so you should be able trigger with a transfer in of DAI and than a sale]
  • So I purchased $100 in BTC (bank account can be linked with Plaid, ACH deposits available to trade instantly to $5K limit)

Our Verdict

A small bonus ($10 in BTC on each side, plus maybe ~$0.70 in expected value from the 1 BTC giveaway), and the referral cap is small.  I probably would have passed, but I’m irrationally compelled to do all crypto related bonus deals.

At the least the platform seems fully legit and has a number of high profile investors: Jack Dorsey (twittter), Andreesen Horowitz, Coinbase, …

• Update 2020-07-02: CoinList now supports the stablecoin DAI, so you should be able trigger the bonus with a transfer in of DAI and than a sale or alternatively a purchase of DAI if you don’t want to accept the BTC price volatility
• Update 2020-07-01: CoinList has reset the referral reward balance for July (full $20,000; 1,000 referral bonus pairs showing available).   They state you can see the remaining rewards for the current month at coinlist.co/rewards but I can’t seem to see the counter unless logged in. (HT: Justin)
• Update 2020-06-26: CoinList is showing out of referral rewards for June 2020.  They note $20,000 in rewards will be replenished on the 1st of each month.  Sorry if you got hit with no referral bonus.
• Update 2020-06-16: This promotion is active again (HT: Dominique).  CoinList now activates 2,000 $10 BTC bonuses per month [link to complete rules] – as of today all $20,000 in rewards is showing as unclaimed [my math says that’s 1,000 pairs of referral bonuses per month].
