Don’t waste your reward points on Economy to Europe. IMO it’s only worth paying the taxes for Business and First Class.

I just returned from a trip to (continental) Europe on a DL Y award ticket I booked during a previous sale for 32k + ~$50 RT pp. Perhaps not the deal of the century, but seemed like decent use of SkyMiles.

Abelian – Why was that same 32K Flight only $50 in taxes to the rest of Europe? Is it JUST the UK that charges the higher taxes? IE, if you flew into say Rome or France would it be cheaper (taxes?)

I can buy a SFO-LHR fare for $415 in February and earn ~10K miles. With junk fees of $185, the net value of 42K Skypesos is $0.0054.

Yikes, $181 in fees! And here I went on a cash trip last year for under $500 before I heavily got into churning. Same time period too.

Taxes and fees out of UK are always that high, cash or points. That $500 was a $300 fare 🙂

UK taxes on airfare is ridiculous if you’re traveling from far away. Of the $181.03 in taxes/fees charged, the US asks for $22.33 of that. The remaining $158.70 goes to the UK.

Ouch. Taxes and fees to London are a nonstarter for this one.
