Does The Chase 5/24 Rule Apply To The Chase Marriott Premier Plus Card?

When Chase launched the new Marriott Premier Plus card I automatically assumed that the Chase 5/24 rule would apply to this card as it applied to the previous Chase Marriott card. Reader usernamechuck pointed out that there was two successful datapoints of people being approved despite being over 5/24 on the DansDeals post regarding the new card, @spencerformiles also had a rep tell a friend that this card is not subjected to the rule.

I don’t put much stock into what reps say and often people think they are over 5/24 but they aren’t (either due to miscounting on including things like business cards not reporting to personal reports). So I did what any sane person would do and collected all the datapoints I could find (in hindsight there wasn’t many). I’ve split them into two categories: people claiming to be approved over 5/24 and people being denied who are over 5/24. Keep in mind that Chase will often state that you’re denied due to too many accounts in the last 24 months, even on cards without the 5/24 rule applied.

  • Approved despite being over 5/24: 1, 2, 3,
  • Denied over 5/24: 1, 2, 3, 4,

My personal opinion is that the 5/24 rule does apply to this card and it was simply a case of miscounting. Please share your own datapoints in the comments below. Also keep in mind there is a different offer on the Marriott Premier Plus that might be better for some readers.

Applied for marriott card today. Got 30 day pending decision by mail. 8/24 but only 2/12. Last chase card was 22 months ago.

I was declined over 800 score and rep told me declined for too many new accounts opened in last 24 months. I had 8, so evidently it does apply

I applied on the 4th at 7/24 and had the 7-10 day status on the automated line. I just called and spoke with a nice lady who told me I am declined for “too many accounts opened in the last two years” and that I would receive a letter in the next few days.

Doc – Are you hearing anything new about Chase shutdowns, perhaps brought on by people applying for this card?

I’ve been monitoring the Reddit thread, where there are about 2-3 new shutdown stories posted per week. It’s hard to tell how widespread the shutdowns really are… 2-3 per week is nothing in the context of Chase’s XX million accounts, but undoubtedly a tiny fraction of people report to Reddit. Plus with some of these stories it feels like there’s a major risk factor the poster is omitting…

Anyway, wondering if there’s any sense as to whether the pace of shutdowns is holding steady, or perhaps further thoughts on the patterns/causes?

there are many forces at play and the game has drastically changed in the last year with all banks publicly and fully aware of the game and actively preventing perk abuse.

only ignorant and naive players will think the shutdowns and anti-terrorist measures is a fad. no. it will be a continuous theme and until certain metrics are met.

Thanks, DOC, for raising this!

What made me wonder is that Marriott was a tricky dp to being with. Why is their biz card not under 5/24 but the personal card is? That isn’t true for any other Chase card (not sapphire/ink, not United, not SWA). And of course Marriott is split between Chase and Amex, which is unique among Chase cards.

But with Chase shutdowns happening, we have the double worry that (a) we won’t get approved or (b) we’ll get approved and then shut down.

Given that, to test 5/24 we have to rely on noobies who nonchalantly apply for the Marriott card without full realization of what they’re doing. (Or on people who don’t give a sh-t.) It’s not ideal. Of course, even if we find solid dps of people getting approved over 5/24, we’ll need to figure out if those are freak occurrences or if they illustrate a rule for this card.

(Also, iirc, there were dps of Marriott personal cards getting approved over 5/24 even before the relaunch.)

thank you for clearly stating that being denied due to too many new accounts in the last 24 months does NOT mean 5/24 applied.

I’m confused by the language because i’m pretty sure i’m under 5/24 and i’ve opened two cards with chase this year in february and march, but then april 1st came and i got a letter stating i’ve had too many accounts in the last 24 months. The thing is… i’ve only opened business credit cards, anyways i’m afraid to continue to test my luck

NinjaX

at this point, you are opening too many chase accounts too quickly. u didnt give enough info so I have no idea what your x/24 is or how 5/24 applies to you. but opening chase in FEB and then in MAR then applied in APR is shutdown fastrak. slow down.

also, based on ur comment, i assume u just started the game. if so, ur likely below 5 in 24. read doc and reddit more to get whats up. theres not enough space in this section to explain the strategy but its all on reddit on the side bar. its a huge guide.

Chase is known to use the “Too many accounts in the last 24 months” language despite being under 5/24. If you’ve opened several cards with them, and come close to the max credit they will provide you based on your credit profile, they will still deny you with that language.

I had a Discover credit card dating back to December 2012. Shut down last month without explanation after a couple cycles of adding AUs and removing them every couple months. I was contracting with Tradeline Supply Company to effectively “rent out” my good credit (800+) to their customers needing a credit score boost to take out loans & such.

Don’t do that unless you don’t need the credit history anymore. The real problem is that you are most likely being used to create synthetic identities that then will bust out.

Your explanation of real people taking out loans is naive.

Don’t blame you for not testing. All my Chase accounts shutdown a couple weeks ago after they approved my last application. But, I just found out today that all accounts (6 including business) reinstated. So happy!
But will not be testing the Chase waters anytime soon.

u were very lucky. consider it a huge warning to your face. but appreciate the DP. do you have other posts where u outline ur situation? if not, can you please give us more info? what happened? ur 24 month stats? what did u do to get shutdown besides the new app then reinstated? who did u call? it would be valuable on reddit on FT threads.

Fathiss Mind if I ask for some DP’s on your situation and what you did to get reinstated?

My wife was shutdown and i called in to request reinstatement. Spoke to someone for about 10 – 15 minutes who took notes and passed it along to the proper department. Less than a week later we received letters for each account repeating the same thing, that they were not going to reinstate the accounts based on

NUMBER OF CREDIT CARD ACCOUNTS
TOO MANY REQUESTS FOR CREDIT OR / REVIEWS OF CREDIT
THIS ACCOUNT AND/OR A RELATED ACCOUNT WAS CLOSED AT THE BANKS REQUEST

That last one seems so stupid. Its telling me they cant reinstate me because they closed me down at their own request.

Was going to try sending a letter to the EO next, or call in to them.

My story reads like most on Reddit. I am 16/24 (but 6 are business). I got same reason for s/d, too many accounts open blah blah.
I applied for a United card a couple months back on a solicited offer and was rejected because you know (5/24). Thought I’d chance it since solicited (stupid me). Then a month later I applied for the Iberia and was approved. Later that same day I read DOCs post on the shut downs and shit my pants. Sure enough, two days later all accounts shut down.
I called the number on back of card and asked to be transferred to lending dept. Spoke with a lady there and calmly told her I thought it unethical I was shut down responding to solicited offers (only one was solicited but I used plural). She said she would file a case and someone would contact. Got a call 5 days later telling me all accounts reinstated. No reason given and I didn’t ask.
I was shocked because I have little spend on any cards except for sugnificant churning on my two business cards at Staples. I sure would never have reinstated me!

Fathiss really appreciate the info and glad u came out alive. i just cant believe ur luck tho. wow. ur telling us that u have crazy obvious MSing at OD/DM Staples on ur biz INKs and they still reinstated you? nice! but what are we talking here? maxing out 50k?

but more importantly, can you give us x/6 x/12, last chase approval and how many chase cards you have with them total? trying to see what may have helped you. 10/24 is pretty key since 6 are biz but 2 are from chase rite? so 12/24 in their eyes? thats actually not bad.

Cmon man, read what I wrote. Two of them already answered! Last card approved Iberia and I have 6 chase cards including business.
7/12 (2 business included), 3/6 (no business) but, I think your fishing where there’s no fish.
10/24 taking out the 6 business is correct.
No, not maxing our the two Chase business cards but at a rate of about 30k/yr each.
I doubt that you’ll find anything to hang your hat on though it won’t stop everyone from trying. I think it’s the luck of the draw on who reviews. Because if they have some specific rules where I passed and others I read about did not, then Chase is living in some bizarro world I don’t recognize.
Btw, on 3 of my cards I had zero spend all year, only renewal fees which I do every year.
All business card spend exclusively on 5x.
How could they not see I am not a profitable customer?

people who can’t count 5/24 yet confidently report conflicting datapoints are bane of churning. It happens every time a new Chase card comes out.

Generally, any information reported by a name you don’t recognize is completely unreliable in reference to complex rules such as 5/24.

With that said, I was denied for this card and I’m at lol/24. Yes, I know what counts and what doesn’t. Although, 5/24 isn’t necessarily the reason. I don’t intend to fight with Chase, I’m really nervous about a shutdown. Not entirely sure why I bothered applying, truthfully. Was being semi altruistic.

yea. u shouldnt have applied and dont bother recon either. u may get too much attn. but i guess u enjoy russian roulette. since ur lol/24, u had some balls to app for this. glad ur still alive for now.

also, too many n00bs claim lol/24 when they are only 9/24 or 14/24. to me, thats not lol/24 and u can still get plenty of cards with those stats. but maybe not marriott.
