There has always been an unadvertised limit of eight gift cards or coupons that could be used during an eBay checkout; when attempting to enter nine codes, the system would drop all of them and you’d have to start over, see eBay Gift Cards and their Limits).
The astute eBay shopper certainly noticed that eBay’s checkout system changed recently. In the works is a complete review of the new eBay checkout system, but I wanted to share one aspect for now.
Just yesterday, I attempted a purchase with eleven $5 eBay gift cards to see if the new system has the same limit of 8-codes per checkout. The purchase went through flawlessly. It seems that under the new checkout there is no such limit anymore.
On a related note, for a while, the new eBay checkout system was not allowing more than one gift card to be entered – when entering two cards, it would pull one out. Milesperday noted that this is just an illusional problem as, in practice, the system applies both cards and it reflects clearly that way in the total. In my experience from yesterday, this issue is completely fixed and it processed my 11 gift cards properly without a hitch.
Let us know if you bump into either problem of the 8-code-limit or the disappearing gift cards at checkout.
I wish there was a way to know exactly when the 180 days start/end and how much was spent already of the 5k limit.. Ebay customer service know nothing about it and simply refer u to PayPal. paypal customer service personnel either were clueless or just give you bogus info (and that’s after I either explain what the limitation was or escalate to a supervisor that also just gave me bogus info)..
Does any one know more about this? Is it a set 180 days per year (i.e. From Jan-June) or Is it from last day you use a gift card? I just can’t tell..
Well, it’s easy as pie:
180 days: http://www.convertunits.com/dates/daysfromnow/-180
Paypal usage: https://history.paypal.com/?cmd=_history-download – enter date range, select CSV and then add up the Paypal Gift Card Services amounts. I think Chuck had a dedicated post to that topic a few short weeks ago…
There is. Check out this post http://moneymetagame.com/giftcards/how-to-check-your-ebay-gift-card-usage-on-paypal/
I set up my wife with a new ebay and paypal account because I hit the ebay gift card limits in my post. Now when I try to purchase some gift cards (like the kohls deal) in her account the paypal option is blocked out so I can not use gift cards. It looks like it only comes up with some of the gift card sellers. I checked other items and I could use paypal….so not sure what the issue is. Do some sellers make it so you have to have so much feedback to buy from them or something (my wife only has a score of like 5 right now)? Any help would be great.
Thanks
Send me a screenshot at chuck at doctorofcredit.com and I can try to speculate.
I’ve run into this too. Paypal Digital gifts referenced above is a big-time culprit, especially if you’ve bought a lot from them in the last 6 months.
I’ve also run into issues with eBay GCs purchased at 3rd party sites/ offline. It’s almost like they associate your GC with an email address and then limit you somehow when you try to use it on eBay. That or certain sellers. Because certain purchases the gift card is not recognized, but when you use it on another eBay account, it’s okay. It’s almost like eBay/Paypal are actively limiting/blocking people from buying on eBay. Almost as stupid as not being able to leave negative feedback. eBay then wonders why Amazon is wiping the floor with them…. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
Worked for me for with 15 ebay GCs – some small ones, $5, $10 and one with $25 – Was good to offload all those small cards.
Is the limit for maximum amount per order still $500-800? It’s interesting I’ve bumped into both $500 and $800 limits in the past.
My understanding is that the limit was/is the number of gift cards/codes that could be used, not a dollar amount limit.
Chuck is right. I bought a computer last summer – paid $1500 with like 6 GC and another $15 or so with regular Paypal…
Hello,
Do you know if it is possible to use another paypal account (for example, my wife’s) in check out so that I can use more than 5000 ebay GC in one ebay account. Will it make my ebay account shut down?
I think it’s fine to use multiple legitimate Paypal accounts with the same eBay account. I do it all the time.
I’ve been doing it without issue so far (about a year). Each person is allowed a personal and a business account so with two adults, you can have four accounts to use
I still can’t use ebay bucks with ebay giftcards to pay at check out. Is this a limitation also?
Nope.. did it yesterdqy without issues..
I have $93 ebay bucks and using ebay gift cards to pay for the rest to purchase a hyatt gift card but the ebay gift card doesn’t apply
Did you read Milesperday’s post, linked in this post?
http://milesperday.com/2015/12/the-mystery-of-disappearing-gift-cards-on-ebay/
I tried that last week for the $95 for $100 ebay GC. I had ~$12 in eBay Bucks as well as small eBay GC and large eBay GC.
I applied the small GC, but when I applied the 2nd larger GC, I got the error message. Per the post, I clicked Submit and Pay anyway. I got an order details screen, but it looked like it only applied the eBay Bucks with no mention of gift card or credit card payment. There was a “Request Total” button, but when I clicked it, I got an error page. The order did show up in my orders page, but when I clicked Order Details, I got another error page. I did not have a receipt in Paypal to confirm the gift cards were redeemed either. The order eventually got cancelled for insufficient payment. I had to re-do the order with the mobile app for it to work.
I’m not sure if it was the eBay Bucks that caused my experience to be different than that post or what.
same for me
I had this issue too. And yes @Chuck I’m aware of the “disappearing” eBay gift cards.
Fortunately for me i only had a bit more than a dollar to pay after my eBay bucks.
There is a problem with eBay bucks with eBay GC if the balance on applied GC + eBay bucks is over the amount of the purchase. For me, the checkout would remove one of the GC when applying the eBay bucks.
Now if Paypal would eliminate that stupid $5000/180 days limit it would be a total breeze to go on crazy spending sprees on eBay (and in case the San Jose staff reads this: pad their revenue LOL)
Agreed. The $500/180days limit is really annoying.
True that!
