Pay with Paypal and get Free Return Shipping

[Reposting 11/20/18 as a reminder for shopping season. I regularly forget about this benefit myself and it’s really kinda useful. Most sites accept Paypal and it’s easy enough to checkout through Paypal instead of checking out directly on the website. Be sure to activate again – it might have to be reactivated each calendar year.]

The Offer

Direct Link to offer

  • Get free returns when paying for items with Paypal: Paypal will reimburse the cost of up to 12 returns over the course of the calendar. Max $30 reimbursement for each return.

To request a refund, go to the transaction in your Paypal history and find the ‘Request return shipping refund’ option.

The Fine Print

  • Must activate benefit with your Paypal account – it is not automatic (I’m not sure if it will need to be activated again each calendar year)
  • Refund is only for instances that the merchant does not offer free return shipping
  • Must initiate refund request within 30 calendar days of the return
  • Must submit proof of return to the seller’s address + proof of shipping costs

Our Verdict

The $30 allowance is pretty generous and should cover most regular returns. Definitely worth using Paypal when buying an item that may need a paid return. Paypal ran this offer in previous years as a test run, and it now looks like a permanent benefit. I’ll definitely be using Paypal for clothing purchases and the like which could need a return.

I don’t see any restriction excluding resellers, and this should come in handy for them, though there is the limit of 12 per Paypal account.

Oh cool! Now people can send a return package with a brick inside for free! Cool stuff!

This is great for stuff that’s purchased from China. I have had good success buying stuff from China, but sometimes it’s complete garbage, and if the seller requires you to return item, the shipping you pay is typically more expensive than the item is worth.

I’ve used this four times already and it’s been great. Really appreciate PayPal for doing this!

Great benefit esp. w/ eBay purchases. Just note that for some merchants if you pay with Paypal, they can’t refund back to the original payment and you’re stuck with a gift card or merchant credit instead. Best to check the return policy before you buy w/ Paypal.

Thank you so much for this post. I had no idea Paypal offered this benefit.

This is an important exclusion:
Items which are paid for wholly or partially in cash or any payment method other than PayPal; only the return shipping costs for items paid for entirely with PayPal may be refunded under the Return Shipping on Us service;

Are items covered that were purchased from private eBay sellers?

Not sure what “private eBay sellers” are exactly, but it sounds like if you paid entirely with Paypal and have proof of the seller’s address, it should work regardless of who you bought from.

Thank you DoC. I had no idea. Indeed, I’ve tended to avoid shopping at ebay precisely as I was worried about having to pay return shipping. Major benefit / peace of mind.

I hope they make Paypal a permanent rotation category.

What a far cry from all of the “PayPal sucks, I’m so happy eBay is getting rid of them” chants on this site a few months ago.. I still hate them but agree this is an awesome benny, especially combined with the Chase category. I’ve been using PayPal for most of my online purchases lately so this is great for peace of mind.

They have to compete now. People are no longer forced to use them, they must now choose to. Amazing how that changes a company’s attitude towards its customers.

Great benefit. However after reading terms on how it works, I would say it’s totally not worth trying. Too complicated to save a few bucks

I used this a few months ago and it wasn’t too bad. You look up the purchase iin your transaction history, click a “file a return refund” (or similar) button, and upload a photo/scan of your postal receipt for the return shipping. Overall, I found it not too difficult for the value of my ~$20 return shipping.

“File a return refund” never appear for me an any transaction. I did successfully get a refund once by calling customer service, but it takes time… Very shady benefit…

I have a $5 back off $15+ purchase offer on Paypal, expiring Nov 30th. Any idea how to use this? Which sites/vendors sell desirable GCs and accept Paypal? Oh, BTW, Venmo deactivated my account and kept the $150 balance to itself, so I hate Paypal with a passion.

I see that you have to have US PayPal account but doesn’t show that Hawaii and US territories are excluded. Hmmm.
