Everything You Need To Know About GrubHub & American Express Gold $120 Dining Benefit

One of the benefits of the new American Express Gold card is that each calendar month you receive up to $10 in statement credits for purchases made at participating partners. The participating partners are: Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House and participating Shake Shack locations (excludes locations in ballparks, stadiums, airports and racetracks). The most interesting option is Grubhub as they are similar to UberEats where they offer a collection of different restaurants. Seamless is basically just GrubHub with a different name, from what I’ve seen they offer the exact same restaurants.

Things To Know

  • They offer pick up as well as delivery. Pick up obviously carries no delivery fee.
  • Update: This has been removed from the F.A.Q, so I guess prices might not be the same. Prices are the same. Some people complain that prices are higher on GrubHub than directly with the restaurant. According to GrubHub’s own F.A.Q this isn’t actually allowed:

The restaurants we work with are contractually obligated to match the prices they have set on their menus. If you see any discrepancies, reach us on our Contact Us page and we’ll talk to the restaurant.

Promotions

GrubHub often has promotions that make the service more attractive to use. We will always post GrubHub promotions when we see them, if you see any we don’t have listed then contact us.

New Users

These promotions can only be used by new users of GrubHub. I’m not sure if they can be stacked or not, if you give it a try then let us know in the comments below.

F.A.Q’s

Do gift card purchases work?

According to this DP, seamless gift cards don’t work. I assume the same is for GrubHub. The fine print also specifically states gift cards are excluded.

The terms state it cannot be used for gift cards.

In an era of Amex RAT clawbacks and not buried the fine print but on the enrollment page: 1.) This bemefit doesn’t offer statement credir for GC …purchchase right below the enrollment button

Seems like Amex vendors maybe splitting the tab on the credit and being proactive

wish uber eats worked like grubhub with no fee pickup. would make ueats so much more valuable. almost certain ueats would explode. so now i gotta worry about a monthly $15 credit and a $10 credit. dammit dude. its a good thing i dont mind the Ashley Madison Tinder Factory. super easy to swing by.

I know I am probably in a minority here, But I wish Amex would make a ~750 (mayby even $1,000) annual fee card that included all the benefits available on all their cards. I currently pay $1,300 in fees to amex every year for their benefits in additional to annual fees to cards I only get for sign up bonuses.

I’m actually with you on this one. It’s annoying having to cycle through my cards to maximise benefits/points. I currently have the Personal Plat, new Gold, & Everyday from a MR standpoint. I’d happily pay a $750 AF for a card that got: 5x on airfare, 4x on restaurants/groceries, 3x on something to replace Gold’s airfare, 1.2x on everything else (assuming 20 or more purchases like the Everyday) AND $300 airline credit (Gold & Plat combined), $200 Uber credit, $120 Gold Restaurant credits, $100 TSA/GE credit, Priority Pass, Boingo, Concierge, Centurion Lounge Access, etc. Even if it’s not a breakeven (i.e. end cost after all credits of like $100-150), that’s well worth it for me.

CM

I don’t understand your request at all. This literally accomplishes nothing; it’s not that difficult to juggle Gold and Plat, especially when you simply have it saved in the apps for most of these benefits.

I concur! I think that Amex should have a charge card with all the benefits of the Platinum Card plus the rewards structure of the PRG. They should also have a super premium revolver with all the benefits of the Platinum Card with the rewards structure of the Everyday Preferred.

Agreed. I would be willing to have a $1K AF if I got 5x on hotels & airfare, 4x on groceries, restaurants, phone/internet/cable, 3x on other travel, $20-per-month dining credit on seamless/grubhub, and either $25 monthly uber credit with anual $300 in airline incidentals, or a straight-up annual $400 travel credit a la CSR

Cherry on top would be 250K MR signup bonis with $12.5k – $20k spend over 4-6 month.

NinjaX
NinjaX

yea. ive given that feedback many times. imagine if all of reddit sub 140k people called in saying that. i think amex would finally listen. amex is too focused on stopping bonus abuse, but to have one card to rule them all means to have one card with you at all times like your cell phone. thats crazy powerful. nobody would leave home without it except when amex is not accepted. amex could easily be the primary driver card for many.

COBOLCODERUSEALLCAPS

I suspect that wouldn’t happen because it would make their numbers look really bad for their investors.

Jags
Jags

That would never happen. AMEX makes money on rewards from breakage and 1x categories. You have people never using rewards, using poor redemptions, and not taking advantage of bonus categories. Offering 4x points on Dining and Groceries is a loser for AMEX unless the person is redeeming the points at 0.5cpp and getting AMEX gift cards.

AMEX makes money when you use the card for 1x expenses. If you have $50,000 of 4x spend and no 1x spend, and say each MR point sits on AMEX’s books as $0.01 each, AMEX is losing $0.013/$1 spent or $650 based on their 2.7% interchange fee.

If AMEX made a $1000 AF card that did 2x everywhere first $50k, 4x dining and groceries, and 5x hotel and airfare, they’d get crushed by big spenders.

You shouldn’t be paying a renewal on the Platinum card. If you are playing 2 player the no fee first year Ameriprise version is churnable.

Jess

The Ameriprise is churnable…?

Joe
Joe

It’s the definition of churnable

Jess

The Ameriprise app I’m seeing says not churnable, in so many words….

Is the Drop offer still valid? Can’t seem to find it on the app. Which category is Grubhub under in Drop?

Is the Grubhub offer targeted? Cannot seem to see that in the app

Wondering how many people signed up for the new AMEX Gold with $250 AF.
Thinking of waiting till jan 9th, hoping for no annual fee

If you live in NYC, Grubhub/Seamless is pretty much the only way you eat to go food. So a huge benefit to us. Most places don’t charge delivery fees either.

SagittalCrest

I totally agree. In the week I’ve had the card I’ve already spent over $100 on Seamless/Grubhub as I normally would.

Cheesecake Factory gift card would work? GrubHub and UBER Eats don’t serve in our area.

Joe
Joe

In store probably, but not online a 3rd party processes them.

This may be a dumb question, but, what are you going to do with a $10 Cheesecake Factory gift card? Do you sell it on eBay? It seems like you are better off just placing an order to go.

RabbMD

Say you eat at cheesecake factory every three months. The months you do not eat there and say happen to already be in the mall it is located you buy a quick $10 gift card to use every third month….

NKB
NKB

Gotcha makes sense. As others have mentioned living in NYC makes the $10/month a great benefit.

I’m surprised no GrubHub or Seamless (same company?) in my area but we DO have UberEats. I feel like the no delivery fee pickup option would get way more usage in my area (low traffic, easy on site free parking everywhere, etc). Instead UberEats is mostly $7.49 and $8.49 delivery fee from most places in this area and I’ve seem surge prices to $20 delivery a couple times (and I only open the app once or twice a month to use my credit up). I’m not sure what I’ll use the GrubHub credit up for… I wonder if I can order for someone else and they can just go pick it up, maybe I’ll be kind and build a couple friends in a big city and “treat” them to a discount every month or something, lol.

Maybe $10 GrubHub discount for someone to paypal me $5 and then I’ll apply that to UberEats so I get $20 a month for them 😛

Just before this benefit started, I got an Amex Offer on my PRG (now Gold) card for 1 extra MR point on GrubHub/Seamless purchases for the next few months. I added this offer to my card, and it’s still there under Added to Card, so I presume it’ll stack with the $10 credit (but it may be a couple weeks before i try it). But since I added it to my card, I can’t tell you if this +1 MR point version of the GrubHub/Seamless offer is still around.

Is it going to code as restaurants and earn 4 points ?

gus

THIS is the big question that needs answering! If not, then that means that you need two cards in your grubhub profile — amex gold for the first order of the month; and sapphire reserve thereafter…

Stephen
Stephen

you get 4x poitns on grubhub/seamless. confirmed with rep. just make sure you enroll the card into the dining benefit (amex.com or call).

Stephen
Stephen

Yes. Confirmed on 10.9 with a csr.

Stephen
Stephen

FYI – You need to ENROLL in the dining credit. Either on amex.com or calling (just like the airline credit). Not knowing this, Amex was able to retroactively pro rate my first purchase that would have qualified.

Also, you get 4x points for grubhub/seamless txns. Confirmed that with the rep.

thanks for finding this out!

SagittalCrest

I placed a Seamless/Grubhub order on 10/5, which is definitely coded as a restaurant for 4x points. Dining credit is dated 10/9 but showed up in my account today. Hopefully, I see that extra point for adding the Amex Offer, too.

Bob
Bob

Question for the group – with this GrubHub offer, can it be stacked with an airline dining program (aka, Alaska’s)? That is, will I be able to get the following with one order: 1) AMEX Gold $10/month GrubHub credit; 2) AMEX 1 extra MR point offer (making it 5 pts/$); 3) New user AMEX offer (GRUBHUBAPP15) of $15 off with delivery; and 4) Alaska miles for using my enrolled AMEX Gold card with the restaurant on their list?

NinjaX
NinjaX

bob. just follow the technology trail. its not always simple like that, but this time it is. this is true for anything related to shopping. when u buy grub hub. whos charging ur CC? the tech company? 3rd party? or the restaurant itself? so everything in ur list related to GH works but no the last point 4.

Tommy Chen

If just got my Amex Gold and activated the dining credit 3 days before the month ends, does that mean I can get the credit for this month if I make a qualifying purchase?
