Very disappointed that there is no ‘Like’ button on the settlement website.

They really missed an opportunity here.

Facebook is a malevolent data mongering fiend which is why I only connect to friend networks via MySpace and Friendster and rip my MP3s through Napster using free trials of AOL dial up internet.

Can you file a claim if you didn’t use your real name on the account, like a pseudo name or a nickname? They must also have thousands of fake/bot/troll accounts like Twitter & all social media accounts have.

When you fill out the form, there’s a section where you input any username (or the corresponding URI) that you might have used during that time frame. I don’t know the details of how they verify that you were really the user behind that username.

Funny how people think their opinions matter to anyone else.

There were already over 100 million users in the US by that time, so no one is going to get much.

Why do I sense that this is another Zuckerberg data collection scheme?

I keep a bare-bones profile only so that others don’t impersonate me. It already happened once and I had to get a police report in order to have FxxxBook remove the profile of the impostor.

I didn’t have a Facebook account, and someone from Nigeria (yes, really!) opened up a Facebook account using one of my not-often-used emails (for throwaway signups and stuff). By the time I found out like a week later, I had hundreds of ‘friend requests’ at that email. The person was REALLY using my email as the basis for their Facebook account — they had added their Nigerian high school, their Nigerian college, had many friends already. OMG, what a nightmare! I was **SHOCKED** Facebook didn’t have an email verification before they opened an account, so they could confirm that the email belonged to the person. I guess this is their strategy of getting more ‘users’ to charge more $$ for ads. I reset the Facebook password which locked out that person, deleted info, and made everything private. But I could see that person attempt to get into the Facebook account many more times over the course of a year (lots of ‘sorry you are having trouble getting into your account’ emails), and I kept getting other Nigerian friend requests. Are Nigerians not allowed to have their own free email accounts or something? I have no idea why they needed to steal someone else’s email to open a Facebook account.

It happened a 2nd time, this time from Vietnam, but on an email address I used everyday. I got an email from a friend of mine, who said ‘hey, I see you’re on Facebook now!’. When I said no, she said she saw my email address on Facebook, and was about to request me as a friend. So I quickly took over that account as well. It’s just ridiculous, probably still happens today.

PSA: Your email address(es) must have been compromised during one or more data breaches of companies where you had account(s), which probably means the password(s) you used there were compromised as well. Hopefully you don’t re-use passwords across different sites.

Better check at Have I Been Pwned. You should also get a new email account, preferably one that allows you to create alias email addresses so that you can use different emails for different services. Then cancel the old one(s).

Unless you just like being subjected to constant phisphing attempts and other fraud.
