The Fine Print

  • Valid 11/20 – 11/26
  • Promo not valid in VT

Our Verdict

Wish this offer was on Visa cards, but still a good deal to rack up drugstore-category spend or if you have spend to rack up and what to push it out to the future. Remember, Chase Freedom is offering 5x on drugstores this quarter.

There’s also a deal showing in the ad to get $10 Extrabucks with $50 Google Play gift cards.

Can you use Amex / Visa gift cards on Venmo with no fee?

I don’t see how this deal can be worthwhile to anyone.
You still need to cash out the AMEX gift cards- and the cheapest way to do that, for the most part, is to buy $500 VGC for $4.95.
Since CVS sells those VGC directly- you could just have bought those directly with your drugstore category CC.
Am I missing something?

I suppose a couple ways to cash out is to actually use them (novel concept I know), or even give them as gifts (now that is totally crazy). I think the point is that you can max out your 5% UR category bonus for chase freedom.

For some of us who also do small time couponing as well as Minimum Spend, these Amex cards work very well as we also need small items, not cash every single time; I plan to hit the drugstore BF deals. Also, GCs work well for short term budgeting tools.

No lecture on just always use your CC for additional purchases, please. Seen it before.

There are acceptable variations for what works for each individual. For instance, when one needs a spend to post by a statement cycle date to get the points needed for a redemption, like a past travel transaction. Whether I carry a balance is up to the individual.

Seeing that credit card approvals are often granted for desirable cards, whether someone has a high 700 or a mid-800, levels the playing field and causes no missed sleep.

Does USPS accept AMEX for MO’s? I’ve had no issues using One Vanilla’s at USPS for MO’s here in SF, but haven’t tried AMEX before.

Great.I just purchased $3K Amex gift cards from from AMEX offer this week. I am going to use my OBC to purchase at least another $4K from CVS to spend or pay my bills (gas, water, and electricity, insurance, doctor bills). I should be able to use them all within 4 months.

I am going to purchase another 4k today using OBC with my wife. My wife spent money much quicker than I thought. We have spent 5K of Amex gift cards this week for real shopping and vehicle maintenance.

Will these purchases apply to the OBC $6500 threshold?

I’m inferring from the post and replies that amex gift cards are harder to liquidate than visa. Is that true? What’s the difference? Thanks.

I did that deal at Walgreens last week with my Freedom 5% CB Visa Cards. Take the AMEX GCs to Office Max/Depot for their $15.00 discount on a $300.00 Visa purchase. Run the AMEX GC like any other credit card. I did three of those today without any problem.
Maximum Discount is $15.00 unlike previous OfficeMax/Office Depot promos, the $15.00 maximum discount is locked into the register. I purchased $200.00 VCG and either $100.00 fixed or a variable GC for $100.00.
Fixed value cards are $5.95 purchase fee. Variable value cards are $6.95 purchase fee.

This is a great work around for folks without an INK card if they have FREEDOM bonus 5% unused .

Thumbs up on the Amex use for Visas at OD. Good to have both brands for versatile use.

You can use them for Plastiq too. So for $500, you’d earn 2500 UR and pay $12.50 in fees. Not bad.

Yup, that’s what we did with the $1,500 each the wife and I spent last week with Freedom at Walgreens.

Can these AMEX cards be used for online payments?

Jan B
Jan B

That’s a broad question.

For instance, does the electricity company always accept Amex? One must check each individual payment site?

CVS around my area requires cash only, no credit card purchases. how about other people? have you had good experience with purchasing them with credit cards?

CVS has monthly gift card purchase limit of $4000 per ID, is this right?

Steve

I haven’t heard of a monthly limit. It should be $2000 per 24 hours. But possibly your local store has its own rules (which might not be enforced by the register).

Are there any issues about whether amex gift card purchase count towards minimum spends for amex CC signup bonuses?

Jan W
Jan W

Regular gift card purchases (like Best Buy) do not count for Amex Business Plat. They will award your points, them claw them back. I would not think Amex GC would count on BPlat either, but not sure. Not sure on other Amex cards. Just data point for BPlat.
