Our Verdict

€14.00 ($15.17 USD) doesn’t strike me as particularly cheap for European bus fares. Often if you book far enough in advance you can purchase tickets from €1. I’m not sure what the FlixBus financials are so there is probably a risk there as well. Personally this is an easy pass for me, but I guess if you know that you’ll be traveling a particular route and it’s normally much more expensive this could be useful.

You couldn’t pay me to take FlixBus. Nothing but awful experiences. Bus didn’t show up, bus showed up 5 hours late another time, never again!

I just want to take a moment to share an awful experience with Flixbus. I was traveling in Germany and needed to use the bathroom quite badly. We had stopped in a city so I got off while new passengers were boarding. I tried to explain to the driver where I was headed but she must have not understood me… I don’t speak German. It is still a decision that haunts me, but it was an emergency and I had to go – the bus latrine was in use. I was gone for all of 5 minutes.

The bus drove off with my bag. I was able to buy another ticket arriving to my destination, but a half hour late. It was a 1 hr journey. I get to the destination, and the bag and bus are nowhere to be found. I go to the flixbus office, and they ask me to fill out an online form and are completely unhelpful. They refuse to even contact the driver or to help me to do so. I walked around trying to find her, but as it was getting late, I had to figure out a way to get to my hotel.

I would never ride with such a company again. It is made up of a bunch of contractors, and the service if something goes wrong is terrible. I could not get a single person on the phone to come into contact with. I never got my bag back, and I’m certain it was probably sold or looked through by the driver. It had tags and contact information, but they didn’t care. I lost months worth of souvenirs and all of my clothing. It wasn’t stuff that was worth much to be honest, which makes it all the more heartbreaking. I am from the USA and was backpacking on a shoe-string budget. I had to repurchase luggage, clothing, phone chargers, etc. I could afford it, but it ruined the end of an otherwise great trip.

I say all this to warn anybody from purchasing these tickets. If you do, don’t stow your luggage and keep everything on you at all times. I was lucky to have been wearing a money belt with my passport.

I was going to ask if they were offering anything similar for their US routes, then I looked and noticed that few to none of their US routes cost more than €14 one way.
