Free $25 Amazon Gift Card with Speedpass App and Fill-ups

The Offer

Direct Link

Speedpass+ is Exxon/Mobile’s system of paying for gas through their app. For the next few months, their running a promo which will allow you to get  a $25 Amazon gift card for using the app 3 times to pay for gas. Available for iPhone and android devices.

  • Download the free Speedpass+ app
  • Link to your checking account, ExxonMobil Smart Card, or ExxonMobil Personal Card
  • Make three separate purchases of at least $25 using the Speedpass+ app

The Fine Print

  • Promo ends June 30, 2015
  • Must redeem promo (claim gift card) within 90 days of when it was earned
  • Only one $25 gift card can be earned. Subsequent purchases won’t earn a second gift card.

I recommend reading the FAQ on speedpassplus.com, they have very clear Q-&-A on the whole process of using the app and getting this promo.

Our Verdict

This promo would sound great on the surface since it would amount to a 33% discount off of $75 of gas ($75 minus $25), assuming you value Amazon gift cards as cash.

Couple of points to remember:

  • You need to pay with your checking account (if you don’t have a Exxon card), so you’ll be losing the credit card rewards. Gas is often a bonused category in which you could get 5%, see Best Gas Credit Cards.
  • If Exxon is your go-to gas station it may still be worthwhile, but if they’re more expensive than your regular gas station it may not be worthwhile. You’ll be paying more, plus losing credit card rewards. Do the math and see if it’s worth your while.

If you are an android user, better read the app reviews. The app crashes and most of the time I couldn’t get to the sign in page.

Check if your local stations accept Speedpass+ before signing up. None of the Exxon/Mobil stations within 30 miles of me accept this form of payment. If your are on a PC (not mobile), you can search for locations at:

http://www.exxonmobilstations.com/?speedpassplus=Y

If the icon is black & white, that station will NOT accept payment via this app.

Go to GasBuddy dot com and put in your zip code to see the spread of gas prices in your area. Where I am, the difference between Mobil and the cheapest is currently only 6 cents/gallon. At roughly $2/gal, I’d need 3 x 13 gal fillups to get the $25 Amazon GC at a marginal cost of $2.34 Sounds good to me, keep up the good work, Chuck!

Also I’m sure many consumers here buy groceries at safeway, who partners with Exxon for their gas rewards. There are a lot of ways to manufacture spend to rack up the $1 off per gallon rewards from Exxon. I have a Exxon that is only 10 cents more than the nearest Costco/Sams and with the $1 off, i save loads, especially when I bring my 3 5 gallon gas tanks.

“If Exxon is your go-to gas station it may still be worthwhile”. Well, if Exxon Mobile is your go-to gas station than you’re wasting your money big time. The cheap gas station fuel (think Circle K, Costco, Kroger fuel center, Arco, USA gasoline etc) comes out of the same refinery but costs as much as $1 less per gallon than at brand name stations. There’s no way to recoup such huge over-payments with any kind of credit card or special promo. I could kick myself in the butt for actually using that Amex Sync they had with Shell a few weeks ago. Even with the $10 off or whatever it was I overpaid for that tank of gas. Just my 2¢…

Save your condescending posts, I’ve found a couple of Exxon’s that are actually cheaper than all of the Arco’s in a 20mi radius. As usual, YMMV and absolutes like this post do not always apply.

I doubt you’re paying $1 more per gallon, especially for competing stations in close proximity. That’s about a 25% variation with today’s prices which is very high. If so, you’re right, promo doesn’t help much.

We have an intersection, 4 stations, one on each corner. 3 are major brands, shell and exxon included, same prices. The 4th doesn’t accept Amex and always holds a 2-3% discount over the others.

In the case of this promo, you would definitely come out ahead in the above scenario. 33% return less the 5% received on an awards card (mine Wells Fargo Cash Rewards) less the 3% max discount I would have received at the 4th station and still pocketing a 25% profit.

This is my scenario but I would guess most people would benefit from the promo even giving up a 5% cash back reward. Then again if you don’t use Amazon, you probably aren’t interested anyway.
